Camping a go-go

I’ve never watched ‘Nuts in May’, a small British film about a nutty couple going camping with funny antics along the way.  But I was loving the fact that Peter Jensen had once again returned to the level of quirky dorkiness that I have always loved with his AW08-9 collection ‘Candice-Marie’, the name of the female character in the film.

Though sponsored by Topshop, Jensen eschewed the Topshop venue (can anyone agree with me how out of the way it was…. for some reason Marylebone is just not on my radar…) and chose Conway Hall which reminded me of going to see school nativities or orchestra practise halls.  Show goers were offered a lot of Yorkshire tea (which I took full advantage of because I got addicted to the stuff a while back after a Yorkshire-bred friend converted me….) and cakes.  Even the showgoers seemed to predict the quintessential Eng lish mis-match feel that would ensure in the collection…

It’s not that the clothes were pretty as can be but that’s precisely what I was expecting from Jensen; a sort of fuddy duddy-ness that is really endearing, and we got it in the form of tea cosy hats, tea cosy dresses, odd swirly carpet dresses, knitted camping socks all coming together in a deliberately messy heap.  Not to sound patriotic but I for one am glad that Peter Jensen has returned to something comfortingly familiar to me… like a cup of Yorkshire tea…

  1. That crochet-coat thingy at the bottom right is a scream! The foil skirt directly opposite at left is the END. I love love love it.

  2. what do you mean marylebone is out of your radar?! where exactly does you radar belong…
(btw love jensen and photo of girl with red tights)

  3. ah, has me reaching for my Taylor’s this instant. I mean, when a crocheted tea-cosy makes it into a collection….
And look at all that shortbread!

  4. I agree that the Topshop venue was pretty out of the way…but it was a nice change to wait for the shows inside, with champagne and even food (!!), even if you were not one of the “first and second row” people!

  5. the topshop venue was a sodding NIGHTMARE to get to. I don’t know why but it seemed like such a trek. but not as bad as the bloody moet bus on wednesday.
where were you sat at Jensen? I didn’t see you! I was front-left from the models’ exit, opposite harriet quick.
the yorkshire tea and cake was a genius touch. I am ordering the lurex fairisle and maybe one of the man-satchels.
    love,
    Alex.

  6. Anon: It’s just one of those places which I find hard to get to…. one of those touristy places that I rarely go to… unless I’m going to Alfies which I usually get to via Edgware Rd anyway…
    Deborah Jones: Must. Amazon.
Alexander: I was sitting at the front, near the stage where the models exited too…. hmmm….
Loved all the bags actually…even the wack leaf one….

  7. by the way, I LOVE the mix of textures and prints, incl. the crocheted pieces, and all the very affectionately humourous influences (realised upon second look that my initial comment might have read as sarcastic….that’ll teach me to post at ungodly hours)
