I’m a colour coward in the sense that I’m absolutely NOT afraid of most colours whatsoever…. but then when it comes to limiting myself to just one colour, it’s just too difficult and everyday I try to incorporate at least two colours in an outfit for fear or having too much of one colour. I’m not adverse to being dipped in one bright vibrant colour either. But what of that fashion favourite black? Head-toe-black is something that I definitely shy away from and haven’t done since I was a mardy teenager. I just lack the skills to make all-over-black interesting in the way that I want my outfits to be.
However over at Bunka fashion college in Tokyo though, they take really play with their black and seem to come out looking not like a a fashion college tribe but managing to wear their black in their own different ways. I’m picking up notes to remember when even attempting to do my own version of all-over-black; blazers, quirky accessories, braces, layering, wingtips…. all things I have/can do…. I’m guessing if I haven’t attempted to do it then it just probably isn’t my natural instinct. Oh well, idea explored. Idea closed. Expect attempts at bright colour all-over dipping instead (see how my mind just works in silly tangents…?)
Still, pretty pics from the other side of the world are always good eye-candy. These are taken by Swedish-born, Tokyo-residing Sanna Berger who has launched a plethora of street stylin’ blogs…. Vagabond Looks which documents streetstyle in Tokyo, The Vagabond Set which is the Tokyoite version of Dirty Dirty Dancing and Cobrasnake (spotted These New Puritans, Henry Holland and Uffie ALREADY… get her!) and finally Sanna’s own personal blog where she takes cute images of herself and her seemingly fun-filled life in Tokyo, thus making me rather jealous…

I like black outfits from head to toe (last year I was obsessed with black… black nails, black accessories, black everything…).
Anyway, this year I’m feeling diferent, so I’m wearing more colour 🙂
I adore these looks, they know how to layer, layer, layer and play with textures and proportions.
Thats so weird, i’ve been scrolling through the streetstyle blog all day too! I went through a stage where i was so inspired by Japanese street style, but style-arena started to get abit..well…blah….but now! The layering, the colour palettes, oh!
a great excuse to ween myself back onto black tights. the white pairs get a bit sickening after a while…
Whenever I wear all black, I seem to look channel Morticia Adams, but these fabulous people look so put together. Black is beautiful!!!!
It would be worth your time in experimenting, don’t you think? I’d love to see what you’d put together from your own things.
I love wearing all black, I do it regularly. But I love an all black outfit with a shot of colour. For example, today I’m wearing a black dress

thanks for sharing that link, very interesting!
i know sanna! we used to work together years ago in manchester.
and i agree, her blog makes me very very jealous.
I think head-to-toe black is hard to do without looking gothic or depressed, and these outfits look so fun and happy. What a feat!
crazy! i scrolled down past this post only to do a double take since i realized that here in the states, i’d actually seen a fashion show put on by the girls at bunka college! do you know if people are able to buy their stuff?
i love sanna. i remember when she still lived in manchester and ran manchester looks. it’s said that she doesn’t update her street style blog as much as she used to. 🙁 still love her though!
thanks so much for this susie!
you are such a darling, i adore you!
haha, no i dont update the streetstyle as much as i used to because the new site focus more on clubscene than on streetstyle. the streetstyle is really more of a little extra treat for dessert! but i will. thanks everyone for all the sweetness!
sanna
hmmm… head to toe black.. i like it sometimes, but i do it mostly as a comfort issue. and on winter days. it’s such a powerful color (or lack thereof)
I’m all for head-to-toe black, it’s such a cosy thing and one of my favourite colours- only I like a slight variance in texture to stop it from getting boring..and I loved Morticia Addams, no surprises there..
i’m all for head-to-toe black but not because i can pull it off in that cool way that these ppl can. it’s just the easiest for me when creativity is at its lowest point, ie early mornings.
oh my god!!! some of these people were my ex-classmates from bunka!! i miss them!!! *sniff*
Thanks Susie! I love Tokyo style and you’ve just helped my blog links by featuring Sanna’s work. I’ve added another great link on my Google Reader.
that’s so weird.
i didnt actually write that comment:
“hmmm… head to toe black.. i like it sometimes, but i do it mostly as a comfort issue. and on winter days. it’s such a powerful color (or lack thereof)”
so either something went wrong somewhere or someone wanted to express that as me.
what i wrote (and it doesnt seem to have registered) was:
a big thanks to susie, who i adore, and am greatful to for featuring me. also thanks to all kind words!!

Wow, I think that the all black looks there are great! Very stylish and interesting, not what I would normally thought of when thinking of an all-black outfit.
Love the idea! 🙂
