Getting Some Elastic Wear

Just as I made my admission that I hadn't bought jeans in about two years, the denim train came round last week in the form of a free pair of Ksubis.  Except they're not jeans but shorts that are not quite pedal pushers but stop at the knee.  To be honest as they were, I would not have gotten a whole lot of wear out of them, as they reminded me a little of a pair of New Look stretchy denim knee length shorts that both my sister and I lived in around 1997.  Still, I'm living off beans on toast at the mo after hefty mobile phone bills and hospital fees so I'm not about to turn down the free clobber.

I've been obsessed with the idea of cutting out panels out of jeans and inserting something like distressed lace, knitted mohair or mesh in place and was just waiting for the right pair of cheapie jeans to come along to destroy.  This is sort of an initial experiment using some elastic to expand from my cage heritage, courtesy of I Heart Norwegian Wood and the elastic dress that the wonderful Six Six Sick girls made for me.  It needs some extra finishing and more experimentation with what can go under them (the nights here still give goosebumps on bare legs) but I have slightly upgraded the teen nostalgic trews into something that I'll most probably look on with nostalgia five years from now thinking "Cages indeed….what was I thinking?!?"

  1. oooh! love the caging susie. you can definitely work with lots of things like you said lace, mohair etc..
maybe try them with your basso and brooke leggings?
    Love the purple look btw!
    xx-LJ from SOS!

  2. I love the styling in the second outfit, it’s really gorgeous, purple is such a yummy colour!
I might have to borrow this DIY re-design idea & make something similar myself cause they look fabulous…somehow I don’t think I’ll be the only one doing so 😉

  3. Wow! Love Angie’s stuff. Just got a black harness but want more! These pics are TDF! You never cease to impress. Thanks for always inspiring love!

  4. So when I saw the 1st outfit I just kept thinking that your legs must be freezing but I so love those shoes! then I saw the 2nd outfit and thought.. wow! amazing styling.. the DIY denim looks fabulous! I’m impressed.. very impressed. x

  5. Those skinny shorts (I call them that, anyway) thingies are really popular around these parts i.e. Bangalore too, but no one rocks it quite like you.

  6. Love what you did with the shorts! Very creative. And af course you look smashing, as always. It’s not just the fact that you have a lot of incredible clothes, it’s more about the way you put outfits together. Like no other:)

  7. Those shorts are effing awesome. I love the first outfit a TON, real nice touch with the zipper necklace.
And what did you say? You are living on beans and toast???
Sacrilege!!! This would not be OK if you were my roommate! No wonder why you’ve been looking like kate moss in the nineties.

  8. I love the fact that you destroyed a pair of new Ksubis…only Susie Bubble! Paired with tights underneath they look amazing!

  9. Wow, they look amazing! You may claim you have no DIY talent but I beg to differ. I love the way you styled them as well! Just today I was thinking about these lousy denim knee-length shorts I bought last year for no real reason and what I could do to them and you have given me the answer!

  10. what a cute idea! I think it looks the best with the belted top, the tutu skirt and the purple-ish tights!
I used to do something similar back in the late 80s/early 90s with acid wash jeans, we would cut out small squares all over the front and backs of our jeans and then glue small scraps of white or pink or black lace behind the holes. (and then oddly enough pair it with white faded Bon Jovi shirts…)
Later on we ripped out the knees and wore B&W striped stockings under them with tall Doc Martens.
So I am really loving this look, it really brings back some great memories!

  11. I loved them layered! but without anything underneath…no, coz, it’s reminding me of ham. and i’m calling u fat because you are looking fucking thin right now but hmmm i don’t think it’s right without your tights underneath.

  12. My, my, those are brave! They’re also pretty cool but I don’t think I would ever, ever have the courage to wear them out…

  13. Thanks guys…it’s a work in progress that will progress hopefully into something entirely satisfactory….
Forgot to reel off the outfit…
Outfit 1 – Lanvin jacket, Outsapop zipper necklace (search on Google for blog and Etsy shop), Maria Francesca Pepe t-shirt, Tristan Blair wedges
Outfit 2 – Navy scrunched top from a boutique in Stockholm (forgotten the label…), Modernist purple cut-out skirt, Topshop Unique shoes that are way way old…

  14. I wouldn’t wear them the office, but you sure do rock em. And oh, the envied modernist skirt pops up again! Any chance you could tell us how we can get our hands on one?

  15. I love the first outfit but would never be brave enough to wear it out.
Congrats for your mention in Vogue this month.

  16. I’m REALLY feeling your navy/purple combo in the second outfit! It kind of takes the “denim” away and just makes the shorts “navy heavy fabric”, know what I mean?
And knowing that you likely hand-sewed these (no sewing machine currently, right?) is VERY impressive, elastic can be such a bitch!

  17. Your cage mad!! I would like to see you wear this with a cage top and cage shoes and just go for a total cage overload! If anyone can carry it off, you can!

  18. What an awesome idea. Caged shorts. Will have to give this the old DIY-try, perfect way to revise those crappity jean shorts that I was going to get rid of.

  19. gorgeous!!!!!!!! (purple photo)
from that adorable top down to the killer shoes, you sooooooo rock it. you have this eye that is just amazing! i love the way you put stuff together. it’s very unique and what keeps me coming back, while i love my rumi and camille you have something very special and i really enjoy your blog. thank u!!

  20. ahh, I dont suggest you to wear the elasticy shorts majiggy alone, because it looks a bit sluttish, but it does look more abstract when you wear it over your puse tights.
