Going Marbles

It does sound quite trite to start off every paragraph with some childhood ditty but I just can't help it when those dusty memories are triggered.  Last week, it was my feeble inability to look at Magic Eye paintings and this week it is my messy attempts to marble paper.  At the age of seven, I set myself the mammoth task of covering the insides of my hardback books with marbled paper because I saw it being done in some library.  What I didn't realise was that you had to use special marbling inks to marble the paper and I didn't have the pennies to buy the stuff.  I kept on trying with all different kinds of paints and inks and even grabbed some Chinese calligraphy ink as a last resort.  It was a messy affair that induced a spanking and a scold from the mothership.  All I wanted was swirling pretty colours on paper that could never be duplicated.

At a press day last week, Josh Goot's A/W 09 marbled pieces stopped me dead in my tracks.  Floods of inky tubs and ruined paper welled up in my eyes.  Ok, so Goot was actually looking at rock formations (a lot of geology trips this season I must say…) and mineral patterns for his prints this season but all i got hit with was marbled paper 'mares turned good by way of impeccable tailoring and prints that can't be categorised, which is of course a good thing.

  1. Very pretty and dreamy. I’d actually like some bedding in this fabric 🙂

  2. Hello there, i love your blog and I read it everyday – is almost religious! lol
Btw, I have a question for you in my blog, hope you answer it. thanks
    xoxo

  3. You sweet girl! I bet inky tubs and ruined paper weren’t the only things welling up in your eyes when the memory came flooding back.
I love the look of rich “spilled” ink on fabric, just great.

  4. Unbelievably beautiful! It makes me think of this fantasy outer space world, which is of course a very very good thing! I love how the usually frou frou colors complement the black and white without making it any less edgy. Perfect.

  5. I’d be hard pressed to wear this but I do like the material and thought the bedding comment was spot on – is that so terrible?

  6. oh, and thankyou so much susie for putting me in your links 🙂 it means so much as i read your blog everyday. x

  7. Wow, that is a stunning print. I love the jackets so much! It’s like an explosion in a paint factory, but a very contained explosion and in a paint factory that only uses gorgeous muted colours that all match…. sort of.
I too have painful childhood memories of attempting to be artistic and failing miserably so keep sharing 🙂
    xoxo

  8. it’s been a long since i haven’t visit your blog…
i always find it very interesting and i love everything here
hope you’re having a great time
    =D

  9. How interesting! It reminds me of Peter L’s galaxy dresses.
I wonder though, with such bright tones and presence, would you do accessories or no? I feel as though gem and bling would be out. Maybe leather?

  10. They are fantastic dresses, i really love the marble-look to the fabric. I love your blog – its fantastic. I have developed a new website for the hair industry called Salon Business. We love fashion-forward blogs like this – keep up the good work!

  11. aww, susie.
One day, someone will publish a book of your blog entries, and we will make damned sure there’s marbled paper in each and every one.
And, perhaps, free gifts of this collection?
It can be a very exclusive book. lol.

  12. Love it! I’m obsessed with all minerals. I wonder how they treated the fabric.

  13. The dizzying prints kind of feel like seeing a Jackson Pollock painting… a bit disorienting and interesting at the same time.

  14. It always makes me happy seein you givin some love to aussie designers especially those as lovely as josh goot.
In highschool in textiles we marbled some of our own canvas bags. That was pretty much to highlight of my DIY career…

  15. Love marbling so much I actually sell marbled bags on etsy. Well, I have some posted on Etsy anyway. Josh Goot’s stuff is very cool and very different. Like the (almost) black and white thing he has going on.

  16. Wow. I would kill for one of those blazers.
I didn’t even think of marble, it looks to me more like those… spray marker things. Where you get a marker and you attach that thingie and you blow through it and it sprays the marker ink everywhere causing an almost spray-paint effect. It’s some little kids novelty thing, have you ever seen it?
