Re-Cycling Again

>> I found Jess Cartney Morley's final verdict on leggings "it's just that it isn't projecting a cutting-edge look any more" kind of amusing – questions a-floating – were they ever 'cutting-edge' to begin with when all they are, in my opinion are a layering device and a warmer alternative to tights or in braver cases, trousers?  I haven't bid adieu to my drawer full of leggings yet when they technically still serve a practical purpose but I have taken up with the alternative that Guardian excitedly proclaims as the legging's successor (did we not talk up the cycling short sometime last year?).  Successor?  Perhaps not. But recently, it's definitely crept in as a summer staple which makes sense as the shorter version of leggings… not so much today when the sun has gone in but it's coming back out in a few days and these American Apparel ones under shorty short shorts like these eyelet tiered ones from Pixie Market, become sort instantly useful to prevent short-short exposure.  In short, I've been double shorting a lot… and that's a lot of "shorts" in one paragraph.

P.S. On an AA-related note are from I suppose everyone has been noticing the influx of the pastel, slightly more amped-up pieces flooding the stores but question, why so pricy?  Over ¬£40 for a shirt in the flimsiest of cottons in a slightly dashing colour?  Or is that UK-upricing… I suspect it's the latter…

  1. Oooh I actually didn’t notice that the eyelet shorts were shorts at first- they look like a skirt! It looks like a sort of skater-meets-cyclist outfit, and I must say your eye for prints and textures is unmatched, Susie.
AA is insanely overrated and overpriced though. (and I say that with no reference at all to their bullshitty hiring policies)

  2. PS: Leggings were cutting-edge? When, 1980? The ladies and gents over at the Guardian have the occasional brilliant turn of phrase when it comes to writing about fashion, but this is not one of their finer moments.
Also, cycling shorts have been showing up on blogs for what felt like donkey’s- not just you, Dreamecho also did a post about them a long while ago.

  3. Hi Susie, You gave me an idea of how to recycle my leggins as well as some “cyclist lycra” in white lace.

  4. Loving re-cyling at the minute!
AA’s UK pricing is ridic. If its $40, its probably going to be ¬£40 or maybe ¬£38 depending on how generous they’re feeling!

  5. Nice, I like your look. If leggings are passe, can you tell me an alternative to trousers, cropped pants, jeans, maxi skirts and dresses, if can’t show leg? (because I have bad legs) 🙁

  6. Leggings cutting edge – were they even cutting edge 1st time round. I totally agree with you here, they do have a practical purpose. Love your eyelet shorts. Very pretty. Xxxx

  7. Those cycle shorts are lovely but I refuse to pay AA prices for them. If I hold out long enough, I’m sure H&M will release a purse friendly version.

  8. Dru, shut up. Susie didn’t proclaim that she was the only one who initiated discussion on cycling shorts. Also your blog is very boring.
I really like those eyelet shorts. I saw them on the LF site and would like to see them in person.

  9. Isn’t fashion kind of bewildering? I mean, any look that gets people really talking, whether it’s for the right or wrong reasons, has to be given credit because it’s fashion in the making!!! The girls in our office think that look is cutting edge for 2010. Flowers and floral prints combined with the clever shorts is genius!!

  10. Jasmine: I knew the policy was stringent but I didn’t realise it bordered on being psychotic…. they also don’t seem to know how to spell… why do they insist on using ‘chique’???

  11. I think you look terrific here and I love how you incorporated the shorts – I’m beginning to see them in different places and it totally takes me back to the 80’s! Love it!

  12. I don’t see how the broderie anglaise is 80’s at all, I’d say more along the lines of HOlly hobbie pantaloons meets victorian ladies long johns. I can see where you’re gong with the under- outter wear. But i think the fabric would be better worn as a petticoat to accompany an prairy layered style look, could even punk it up a bit. Would be cool to see you pull off this look
By the way did you ever visit central st martins foundation exhibition- fashion department ? ^_^x

  13. Lucyjo: I think the broderie anglaise combined with the Kelly Kapowski-esque floral body and crop top combined do sort of give off an 80s/90s vibe (Saved by the Bell… Clarissa Explains it All etc etc…) but I was also thinking of Victorian pantaloons when I picked them up….
Sadly it’s waaaay hot for prairie anything…
I went to the foundation show but just to see my sister’s work – she did graphics… I was rushing that day and didn’t get to take a proper look around…

  14. In holland aswell! i used to work at AA, and all the black leggings in the size small used to come in with 2 different lengths of legs. who pays 28 euro’s for uneven leggings!? sorry for the useless info, it just came to mind when reading your post about leggings, AA and high prices

  15. Nathalie, no need to be bitchy- I was only pointing out that I’d seen them elsewhere, not running Susie down. You’re free to find my blog boring too, see if I give a damn.

  16. omfg!!!!! je suis sous le charme de ce short!
    *_*
    donne le moi haha!
ah moi aussi j’adore les cycliste, c’est vraiment pratique sous une jupe!
