So I’m a little slow but Monday night was the Burberry party held at Koko in Camden, London to launch the new perfume ‘The Beat’, hosted by Christopher Bailey and Agyness Deyn. I’m just getting to grips with the slew of parties that have started in the runup to Christmas and rather than getting into a complete ‘What to wear? Must buy something NEW!’ panic. Tosh to that. Out comes the 80’s big poofy prom dress that goes swish swish with it’s taffeta meringue skirt. The cheap eBay buy had been languishing as I thought I lost it (yes, I do realise it’s ridiculous to think you could have lost something THAT voluminous!) but I dug it out of a suitcase and though ‘Yes I fancy going for volume…’. I realise that amongst the gaggle of tight body-con dresses, sharp leather jackets and bondagewear my skirt probably veered too much towards looking like a vanilla cream cupcake. Albeit, with a lot of added black texture what with the fringe, the organza and the matt sequins…
Koko had definitely been perked up in a way that was a far cry from my memories of it in its Camden Palace days when it was a little bit on the grim side. The stage was obscured by blank walls with a video projection showing a 12 foot Agyness Deyn dancing around to.. doh…the BEAT, in skimpy shorts and a long scarf looking cool in a way that only she could. The screens later slided open to reveal The Fratellis who performed a four song set. Dangling from the ceiling were hundreds of bottles of The Beat perfume.
Of course all the usual fashion ilk were there and me and the boyf were standing around looking like the lost cupcake and a boy soldier (he was wearing some serious stormtrooper-esque Lanvin boots…).
Stupidly I forgot to take my camera but Diane Pernet of course has taken the best moments… I only have ickle observations to make that would make this post remotely readable….
…Agyness Deyn’s Burberry Prorsum dress was really mesmorising as it appeared to be made out of wispy sort of ostrich feathers in a grey-ish mauve colour. Girls were gathering around her in a sort of hilarious fangirl circle in the toilets but I just wanted to touch her dress…
…Christopher Bailey is shorter than I had imagined but is the smiliest person in the world… he especially went mad when the Fratellis started their set…
…Fred Butler whose set designs I have gone on and on about is going to be launching an accessories range which is V.V.V. exciting for me…she was wearing another one of her own creations at the party (check her out on Diane’s reportage)…
…There was a HUGE abundance of leather going on. Cropped fitted and a little bit wrinkled was the style of choice but there were also a lot of leather skirts, bodices/corsets about too…
…I’m afraid to say that Daisy Lowe made me want to pull out my old stash of floral strapless prom dresses again…
…As the PETA protestors were outside Koko, inside oddly a LOT of fur was present. Most of it seemed vintage be it a little stole, a full-on jacket, trimming on a waistcoat or on a hat. There was a surprising amount of it…
…Being not inclined to seek out goody bags, it was slightly amusing to see girls holding 4 or 5 of them. Where they were being handed out, I haven’t a clue. Gosh I’m a very useless vanilla cupcake aren’t I?…
…I’m probably the only one who is getting some sort of kicks out of the Channel 4 show Nearly Famous but I’m more impressed with the slightly out there styling especially with the characters Kate (played by Anna Brewster) Lila (played by Tallulah Riley). Anyway, onto the point, Talluah Riley who will be in the new St. Trinian’s movie (will this not be the silliest film to go and see?) with a very plummy prime British cast was looking lost on the balcony of Koko wearing a strangely St. Trinian’s-like outfit consisting of a white shirt and tartan miniskirt. It was mind bending as I had only seen the poster earlier on at the tube station promoting the St Trinian’s movie with her wearing a similar outfit. Perhaps she just really liked her on-set costume…
Wow. I have just realised that this post has consisted of nothing but cupcakes and odd musings. Back to the proper fashion ‘stuff’ I promise!

Incredible outfit! I especially love the sequin sleeves coming out of the fringe coat and who knew that was a prom dress underneath? Looking like a cupcake is obviously a great thing.. also, after perusing the photos, you seem to have the best look going. oh and I totally know what you mean about wanting to touch Aggys dress! It looked so soft.
Mighty fabulous darling….Truly no era did poof better then the eighties. I still wear much of the synthetic frou-frou from the era. There’s nothing better than a multi-textured cupcake….Love you and the blog…
those two photos of you, I lllove!!
You look amazing that that photo.
I’m really liking the textures in that outfit.
The sequined sleeves looks so fab, I just started getting into Nearly famous thanks to 40D and I totally agree the styling is superb especially the character of kate (Ana Brewster was also in some episodes of Tudors – BBC2 Friday 9:00, which also feature some great costumes too)oh dear, I sound like a right TV freak…
You look fantastic! I love your skirt–the black really does give it an edge.
It looks like a fun party, and Susie you can hold your own against any of the fashion crowd- that taffeta poof as awesome. Plus, your hair looks wonderful.
you look incredible! the pouf is lucious, and the accessories are a perfect pairing.
Love your outfit Susie. The poufy white skirt looks amazing with the black and the accessories.
i love the thought of you and you boyfriend as a lost cupcake and boy soldier, like youre not swept up in the whole daaaaarling crazy misshapes fangirl crowd but the susie bubble we’ve always known ๐
You know what Nearly Famous and Skins have in common? The black characters are only ever allowed to be gangstas or preppy nerds. Anyone else noticed this?
“Lost cupcake and a boy soldier” is a classic! Thanks for that–the incongruence of imagery!
you are very pretty miss bubble ๐
those are some awesome shoes!
That picture of you at the top is adorable!!!!!
Wow! You are very pretty!
you look stunning! and i love hearing about these awesome things you get invited to just as much as the proper fashion ‘stuff’!!
Since it’s a perfume launch, I must ask- what did the perfume smell like? I’ve liked Burberry’s perfumes so far, so I’m curious.
Also, another question- this time about your white chain necklace, it’s awesome- did you make it yourself? Or where is it from?
Thanks!
Dru
Susie, you look wonderful! I love how you layer the sequins with other textures.
That Gareth Pugh photo? Sexy. ๐
Now, I want to run to a Burberry store just to feel the material of THAT dress.
Omg, that first picture of you is fabulous! I love it!
Thanks everyone for their comments…
I didn’t realise how funny ‘lost cupcake and boy soldier’ sounds when you read it out loud… but honestly, the imagery is spot-on!
Dru: Ah well..the crux is because I was a slow-mo on the goody bag front, I have absolutely no idea…
I was thinking they could have sprayed it around a bit to get everyone into ‘The Beat’ (geddit?) but nope…haven’t a clue… I imagine it’s a bit sexier than Burberry’s usual perfumes…
The necklace is vintage… charity shop buy me thinks!
Lola: Good observation… they are after all token black characters… except the one in Skins is also actually posh/fake gangster which I thought was a bit of a send-up…
Glad it was fun. Did you get paaped Susie? Will you be in ES magazine tomorrow? (One day I’m sure you will be, it’s surely only a matter of time, no?)
I love your skirt!
I hate when I have forgotten my camera and there is the perfect shot
I ADORE your outfit! Gorgeous.
But Susie, it’s nice to have a little candy coated chic chat to decay our fashion brains every now and then.
And especially (in my case) on a friday.
Chh, too cool, I know I would secretly be sweating my knee socks off for one of those goodie bags.
But you didn’t mention Karen Binns? I love that woman! The pink lippie and the tux? Surely something to report on?
PS, (yayy Dev)
You’ve really imspesred me with that answer!
