Faux Prada Scam

cimg1470.jpg

I know I keep harping on about these Prada socks, but everytime I post something about them, they seem to illicit a huge response.  After I tipped everyone off about the John Lewis cut up tights substitute, I had heaps of people asking me to buy the damn things for them.  I reported the tip as per what Grazia magazine said, so I myself wasn’t entirely convinced that they would work.  So I decided to do a little investigation to put them to the test.  I bought the cotton ribbed tights (yes, there are no other Jonelle tights unless you just want normal opaques) in charcoal and light grey.  They come in packs of two so I thought if it was a disaster, at least I’ll have some useful grey tights.

Cimg1470 Once I had done the damage, the first thing I noticed was that the top of the tights started curling up.  Problem!  Then there’s the texture itself….it’s very thick, not thin like the Prada ones.  Uh-oh!

I had cut them at their longest point so that you’ll have them long enough to do the scrunchy bunching up thing..didn’t work out so great.  Even if you did cut them right at the top at the crotch, they’re not really long enough.

At best, they just look like normal knee highs which you could buy at Topshop.  They didn’t want to stay up either because of the loose hem after cutting it.  Those that wanted me to get them, I’m not really comfortable with buying them in the pretense of you guys thinking that they can do the Prada thang, when you could probably get similar or better tights from your local department store.  In fact Sock Dreams seem to have a really good selection of thigh high/over the knee socks in a wild array of colours and textures.  I can only apologise for giving everyone such a duff tip….. Grazia has a lot to answer for!

These ones from Sock Dream look the business in my opinion.

  1. i ordered the sock dreams M43s, which are loose socks/thigh highs, and i love them despite their severe sockiness (extremely thick) but still fun for wearing with a slightly bigger pair of heels. just a bit of a different look than the pradas, but cute nonetheless.

  2. I have a bit skeptical of the tip, from what I know, cutting anything knitted, the efges curl up, unless that’s the look you want. Not a complete loss though, you could do the opposite and cut the ankles off for leggings.

  3. Note~~ I recently bought over the knee socks from Miss Selfridge and they’re thin and slouchy like the prada ones by the way~~ they only come in dark grey though, not the pretty blue grey.
