Childsplay with a Skirt

Do you ever feel like you want to deliberately recreate a childs-play scenario; the mother’s heels, the lipstick, frou frou something that flops around your ickle body, the overall messiness of it all?  I hope she doesn’t take offense but when the lovely Super Kawaii Mama very very kindly made me this full length skirt because she saw this pleated sheer material and thought sheer-lovin’ me would love it (and she guessed quite rightly….), that’s immediately what came to mind.  Not fiddling around and doing lots to the skirt but just because it’s the got the sort of ‘Disney’ quality that would make you want to put it on immediately without any regard as to what it’s actually being worn with and what consequences that has.  There’s just so much fabric and with the several layers of two toned pleats, you just can’t help but gather it up, swish it around and ‘sashay’ around in it.  Note: I rarely use the word ‘sashay’ which for some reason makes me think of drag queens doing dramatic walks.  In my current childs-play state, it’s on with the very worn-out grey AA vest and the Acne white cut-out wedges.  Dressing up and down at the same time but most of all it enables me to look quite acceptable walking around with so much fabric swathing around the legs.

  1. I agree, the first photo is stunning!
That’s a beatiful skirt, and I love the messy hair to go along with the outfit.

  2. I definitely see what you mean, it has a happy dress-up feel. It also looks perfect with those shoes. On a broader note, I think costumeishness gets a bad rap in fashion.

  3. Pleats and sheer and ice cream colours oh my! Great skirt I’m sure you will find many ways to wear it. I only wish it was warm and or dry enough to wear something like that here at the moment!

  4. Love the skirt, the whole vision of playing dress up was evoked perfectly. Only fly in the ointment? The shoes. Love the shoes–love it all, but not together. The vest is great w/the skirt, but the skirt is so much; think it would be ideal with some simple, stark, metalic thongs {maybe you’d call them flip-flops}. Love the messy hair too.

  5. Sashay, sashaaaay! Love the Acne shoes btw. I saw them on the website and did think, “ooo – hello”.

  6. wowwee.. SKM is so talented. Where on earth does she find the time to be blogger, a mama, a seamstress and all the while look so damn pretty every day?? Lets hope we can all be a glamourous and super as her when we have little ones. You carry this off well – and your hair is so pretty these days. xf

  7. very gorgeous skirt indeed!! i often have those dressing up scenarios, but im just like a big kid anyway…

  8. I agree with amma. I think the shoes with the skirt give a little too much to look at in this outfit and wearing simple flip flops instead would set the focus on that gorgeous skirt!

  9. I really like the layering here. The shoes and top ground the outfit, keeping it from being to precious.

  10. Yay Susie! So glad it fits you and that you love it. I knew you’d find the fun in it. That fabric just started to take on a life of its own as I was working on it, and I think you’ve found the right balance between girly and grounded. πŸ™‚

  11. that skirt would look fabulous once you start randomly looping and tucking it into a big, frothy cotton candy sort of shape, methinks πŸ™‚

  12. i strangely do feel like playing dress-ups with my mums clothes and wshing it had the same look it did wen i was 4:)
that dress is lovely i am on the look out for a tutu that can b worn in public at the moment.

  13. I love the first photo too actually…..! It’s the colours and texture of the skirt that really shine there…
The shoes were, as people have pointed out, to act as a grounder…. a bit of an ‘off’ point…. but yes, simpler shoes would also work though I think flats would leave the skirt trailing a bit as it’s quite long

  14. Want! I’d wear that as a strapless dress secured with my black waist belt. I might even layer my black tank and black slip under it.
