Rooting and Remoulding

I'm all about celebrating the "more is more" at the moment given that I haven't quite reconciled myself with what all this "New Minimalism" garb actually means.  A collection that I was tardy in posting and has since made some minor blog rounds is Lamija Sulijevic's A/W 10-11 collection.  Lamija's name has popped up before in her previous incarnation as part of duo Lamilla where more of a lolita spirit was in force.

Flying solo seems to have galvanised Lamija's own aesthetic and propelled her to explore her own Bosnian roots (Lamija is based in Stockholm but hails from Bosnia).  There are ambitions of aspirational haute haute design where the shapes and modes of embellishment have inklings of old Balenciaga and McQueen.  No bad combination to reference as the collection really stands on its own anyway what with Lamija's own personal connections and love of handicrafts that comes coursing through at every seam and flurry of florals and also in the painstakinly moulded paper (yup indeedy…) shoes.  A modern Marchesa Casati comes to mind for some reason and in black and white the aged feeling is even more pronounced…

So it was a pleasant surprise to see Lamija collaborating with the wonderful Kris Atomic on these illustrations which of course bring a completely different spin to the collection – namely a coloured one – I now see there are muted plum shades sweeping about.  I'm hoping to see these clothes in person soon when I take a wee jaunt to Stockholm this summer just to get to grips with the "more more more"-ness of it all…

  1. All of a sudden the clothes have a completely different feel to them. That’s so cool. The clothing itself is already so interesting, but this dual-presentation really allows for multiple perspectives.
Oh, and congrats on taking a frightening step in your life and I’m sure things will work out in surprisingly awesome ways!

  2. The photos are gorgous! I love the juxtaposition between them and the illustrations. Amazing work

  3. i love the photographs, to me they seem to have an almost indian inspired feeling to them, but then when you look at sketches it has a totally different feel, which is so cool!

  4. I love the shapes of her clothes. And then there’s the allure of differing proportions. Tangentially, Check out the shoes, Whoa! I see good this coming out of this collaboration.

  5. STUNNING. Both the pics and the illustrations. Good call on the McQueen and Balanciaga references, I’m also seeing Vivienne Westwood and maybe even Anna Sui, especially in the sleeved outfits.
I could happily have those illustrations as wallpaper, for the rest of my life!

  6. When I first saw these photos I remember initially thinking they were from the 20’s or the 30’s until I read otherwise, the photography/styling/everything about them is brilliant! The illustrations are such a completely different way to show the clothes but I love it, it’s so nice to see them in color and Kris Atomic is an incredible talent, thanks for sharing as always Susie!

  7. The model (probably the makeup) is a dead-ringer for Bernadette Peters!

  8. I thought her collection was art in itself – and now these illustrations! Gorgeous and fun!

  9. gosh, I love what I’m seeing. I just haven’t got the panache to pull off minimalism (nor do I have the desire to)….I’m all for more is more!
Hope you get to see Lamijas work in the flesh, I’d love to get my hands on some of her pieces.

  10. oh and Susie, this is the first time in a year that I’ve visited your blog. Whilst I’m sad that I’ve probably missed out on many fashion gems, I’m happy to see you are still yourself and just as cute/inspiring. so yay.
    ok, creepy statement over.

  12. For me it’s annoyingly close to Sandra Backlunds style for the knitwear…. For a Swedish based young designer it’s a no no thing to do….
