Tra-La-La-ing Moment at BFA

>> Today I had to fire off a lot of “I’m sorry!” emails because… and I don’t think I remember the gist of it, I *think* I may have been embarrassingly drunk on Monday night on the British Fashion Awards.  I got carried away with the spirit of the evening (and the taste of Patron Tequila) and wound up very very sick with a mysterious bruise on my forehead (hence my absence yesterday).

I’m therefore just going to concentrate on the hours before drink passed through lips when I stopped by Elle’s Fashion Cupboard before the ceremony as Lorraine Candy, editor in chief of Elle UK had very kindly asked me to sit on her table at the BFA’s.  Being the freelance loner that I am, it’s always nice to check out the hub-a-hub of an office at a publication.  Elle’s “360” set-up, where there is no separation between digital and print and editors jump from desk to desk, has been much documented but it’s interesting to witness it in person.

The Elle-ers, who were going to the BFA’s wore a mix of Giles, Erdem and Simone Rocha, adhering accordingly to the “British” dress code of the evening and I too waved the flag with a sheeny shiny dress from Meadham Kirchhoff’s AW 14 collection along with a jacket and clutch by Shrimps.  The shoes didn’t quite fit the bill (Miu Miu in collaboration with Katie Grand when she was at Pop – oh, wait – that’s sort of British right?) but they’re comfortable and reliable.  Someone in Jezebel’s comments section has already described my dress as a fugly enlarged shimmery vagina.  I’m actually ok with that description.  Or I could go with Bowie in his Kansai Yamamoto phase meets Starlight Express.  I actually think Ben and Ed would be mighty pleased with the enlarged shimmery vagina description.   Not that I’m personally advocating vajazzling or anything of the sort…

Got a bit excited when I saw that Elle had a GIF Machine installed in their offices.  It snaps a few stills and turns it into a GIF on the spot, with a handy emailable link for you to get social happy.

… the less said about what happened at the actual awards ceremony the better but basically the summary of my highlights were as follows…

… Anna Wintour’s sneak preview of John Galliano’s vision for Maison Martin Margiela dress was a wicked ace move…
…I hyperventilated a lot when Galliano was up on stage…
…Edward Enninful’s speech that included the poignant quote “If there are any kids out there that think they can’t get ahead in industry because of their colour, cred or social background – if I can do it so can you.”…
…I fan-girled Anna Kendrick and squealed about how excited I was about Pitch Perfect 2.  She looked like she had heard it all before…
…all the designers nominated were well-deserved winners and by and large I agreed with all the final gong takers (yes I’m going to be boringly impartial because it’s the honest truth!)…
…sat next to Gwendoline Christie aka Brienne from Game of Thrones.  Tried not to pump her too hard about season 5.  She’s a hoot…
…is it me or is Nicolas Ghesquière EXTRA smiley and bouncy these days?  Must be all that lovin’ from LVMH…
…Fran Burns, Julia Sarr-Jamois, Simone Rocha and Roksanda Ilincic made my personal best-dressed list…
…Jack Whitehall’s naff gaffes – why?…
…the lovely Swarovski trinket given at our seats got smashed to smithereens when I mysteriously bumped my head somewhere on the way home – just like me – sparkly at one point, smashed at another…

  1. You are breaking the internet with this tra-la-la dress! I love it so much because the colors are perfect for you! You right about Ghesquière ! He seems to be the happiest man alive! It’s because of LVMH. He has to be very smiling now. He is like a commercial working for the biggest company! i’m exaggerate a bit ! or he’s just happy living a wonderful “love affair” with Louis Vuitton!

  2. I just want to stop right here and applaud you for getting drunk at the BFA & admitting it to your readers! BRAVA DARLING, BRAVA – that’s what makes us human!

PS. Any good advice on solving hangover sickness? 🙂 xxx D.

  3. Mhaha so faaab that you got ridic’ drunk and wrote about it. Wehh to the beautiful Meadham Kirchhoff dress, wish we were friendZ xo

  4. hahaha! love the part about the swarovski trinket. and love the quote from edward enninful too, something i’ve been thinking about a lot recently

  5. Susie I have been reading your blog from the early days and I still remember when you purchased those shoes and I was hideously envious and then you also ended up getting the lower-heeled version from a person on Ebay who you actually knew in real life. THAT’s how much of an ol’ timer I am! I even dressed as an angry badger back when you held that competition where you asked your readers how many colours they could fit into an outfit (probably about 4-5 years now!)

I just have one question and that is how on earth do you keep your shoes pristine after nights of drunken dancing? As I know how long you’ve had those beauties and they still look brand new! I know looks can be deceiving but what is your secret? Do you get them constantly resoled? Do you have some sort of shoe stainer cleaner? They betray no sign of the wear and tear and the pounding of London sidewalks so I would love to know how you keep your shoes in good nick!

    1. Eeeek… love you longtime reader! I remember ANGRY BADGER!! So good…must try and resurrect that again to see how Style Bubble readers 6.0 handle it

You can’t quite see from the pic but there is a ghastly water stain on one side of the heel that is impossible to get off. I have no special cleaner. I did have to mend the gemstones a few times with superglue but other than that I’ve somehow managed to keep them fairly in tact. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind if there was more wear and tear. Then I can make a point of what a good night out I had!

  6. Oh, the night to remember. So very jealous (in a non-evil way) about you seeing Galliano. As for the dress – I guess, the comments often highlight things that people are missing in their lives, hence the obsessive thoughts turn into a visual… Personally (and because it’s almost Christmas), I thought of an ornament… 🙂 Maybe half-melted, Murano-glass style, ornament, but it was a very pretty sight.

P.S. Lots and lots of vitamin C (through food mainly), fluids, a pinch of Himalayan pink salt here and there (or sea salt), and, whenever possible, greens to help your liver get rid of the alcohol. Always works!

  7. Have Jezebel changed what they wrote about your dress?

I’ve just read their article on the British Fashion Awards and they have lauded you with compliments… I just thought it would be interesting if they’d read your blog and decided they – actually – they’d rather stay in your good books!

    1. Ah no, it was someone in the comments who said the vagina thing… should have made that clear!!

  9. Hello-I’m a long time reader too (used to write Rosiepop) and remember when you got those shoes too! Good to see the past seasons mixed with the new and I love that dress-so, so good. We do cross paths very occasionally, but being slightly socially inert at times I chicken out of saying hello. I was stood right next to you outside Louise Gray’s tent at Port Eliot whilst my daughter got painted. My very long blonde hair is now brown and very short so I look different to the (brief) Roaiepop days. It’s been great to see your blog evolve and change over the years. Glad you had a good evening (tee hee)!

  10. The music biz is packed with music producers who don’t
really understand how to produce music; we’ve all heard those songs that are hot now,
but totally forgettable before the years’ out.
Dre headphones contain a deep enveloping low conclusion bass
and solid core and high range sound quality on top of that.
    Today’s designers consider painstaking endeavours
    when making electronic music.
