>> I really did have to think hard to figure out when or how it was that I encountered Saga Sig and her photography. It's buried somewhere in the dead pile of emails from the mystical world of commissioning at Dazed. The important thing is that I love her work sincerely and I got a chance to tell her so in this short video I did with her for the The Avant Garde Diaries website.
I pulled these pics from the dusty Mac folder of work from the past year as I don't think I ever got to say that I also got the chance to work with Saga when I interviewed Daphne Guinness for Selfridges' Shoespaper and she came along with me to Guinness' "temporary" but utterly enchanting Mayfair flat to do some portraits and poke around her piles of books, ribbons and shoes.
Saga's work is pretty self-explanatory as to why I'm drawn to it, which is probably why I found it hard to articulate in the video exactly why I have so many of her pics cluttering up my Desktop and Picture folders. She seems to have a knack for drawing out the best out of whatever stylist she's working with and then evoking something far more fantastical that the reality of the setting and shoot. I especially love it with Saga goes on location to her native Iceland to get the most out of wild space…

Saga seems to be a “visionnaire”. I saw her works at her website ( I love Salve Regina and Garden of Enchantment ) and I have to say that she has a so personnal view of Fashion which distinguishes her from the typical pictures we are used to see in magazines etc.. She has a universe mixing dark but light, religious with a suspicion of blasphemy. NICE !!

I absolutely love these pictures – and wonderful interview too!
I have never encountered a people so uniformly trendy and cutting-edge as the Icelandic. And whatever you might have to say about Bjork and her swan costume at the Oscars: It was definitely provocative, memorable and different 😀
Iceland has some great fashion brands too. Check out Steinum, for instance.

I can never get over her photos, she is really one of the reasons why I believe so much in finding out new brains (meaning new perspectives) on the web that encourage you to pursue some fields you might have just paid attention from a distant point of view. What she does with colour is just an explosion of sensational and sensatorial cleverness, or eyeorgasms, and with her composition and her locations, she makes the entire result work in the overall terms this term represents.
thank you for this post. really enjoy her photos.
I have always been love with avant garde and all it represents – the pushing of the status quo boundaries and because its very artistic. Although while in Uni I read lots of papers and essays about why avant garde is a bogus production of mass media but it doesn’t matter because everything is! So just be part of it and enjoy it I say =D
