Growing into Satchels

>> I'm not a great streetstyle pic snapper nor am I brave enough to take pics of well dressed sprogs even though I see them running around anywhere (there is the whole minor issue of asking parents' permission if I can sanp their pride and joys for the benefit of a poxy fashion blog).

However, at the Vauxhall Fashion Scout showroom, when I spotted these two rocking the neon Cambridge Co. satchels that have literally been invading NYFW.  Then I found out their names were Betty and Biba (as in named after Barbara Hulanicki's label…) and of course to top it all off, Biba also sports a House of Holland tee as well as some matching Doc Martens that I wish I bought at the time.  It was all too much for me NOT to take this pic.

It's instances like this that make me rethink my whole "If and when I do have kids, they'll be in Gap kids and nothing else" stance, precisely because I'm looking 'up' to someone who's probably a quarter of my age for style inspiration…

  1. Love kid’s being bold with their clothing choices but don’t you think it’s a bit crass that the sweet girl in green’s shirt is about women masturbating? Perhaps they are too young to know what it was about but don’t they have parents? Pretty funny really.

  2. I love the satchels and Dr. Martens but they are too expensive, so I like to go to thrift stores and find interesting things there (:

  3. They look great, but I’m with Joh: a child wearing a tshirt with a masturbation slogan? Really??

  4. Peta/Joh: I doubt they do know what it means and actually, the effect of those graphics/slogans is that I didn’t even notice what it was saying at first (so blinded I was by the colour-co-ordination). I think the visual effect of the tees sort of outstrip what it’s saying…. I had a Cum Again Christopher Kane tee…. in any other instances, I’d be a bit embarrassed to be wearing a tee with CUM on it (even though it could have two meanings…) but the graphics for me sort of override the actual slogan of what it’s saying. That said, if the gal wants to wear it simply to match her bag and her shoes, so be it…. I’m not personally going to read into a stranger’s parenting ethics…

  5. Good grief. SO inappropriate. Fashionistas have brains of vapour. Has someone called social services?

  6. Really don’t feel great about that slogan tee, I doubt she even knows what it means and that just makes it ten times worse… There’s nothing wrong with kids experimenting with fashion from a young age and I’m not going to pass judgement on any sort of parenting stlye but it is just not appropriate for a girl her age to be emblazoned with a thinly veiled reference to masturbation!

  7. So inappropriate… saying that when I was about 11 I borrowed my (older) brothers rucksack to go on the boat and my parents didnt notice that in Tippex it read “I give HEAD for money” as it was made by the brand HEAD and my bro and his friends found this hilarious. Probably the biggest fashion faux pas I have made.
So hopefully this poor child will look back and laugh however she may consider her parents to be a bit mental for letting her sport this tee.

  8. Hands up to being the mother of these two girls. Also, hands up to not realising what that slogan meant until reading the comments on this post. I never thought I’d led a sheltered life but it looks like I was wrong.
Biba’s favourite model is Agyness Deyn and the bold green type matches her DM’s. That’s the story behind the T – plain and simple I’m afraid.

  9. Hello, Biba is a lovely name, my cat is called Biba and she is beautiful like you. I hope, you and you mum get over this T shirt contoversy (maybe a bit of customising the T shirt could be done!)

  10. i find it really awkward that a kid that young is wearing a slogan t shirt that encourages people to masturbate over agyness dean..
(i really love her boots but that’s besides the point, can’t quite believe her parents let her wear that out.. or have it at all)

  11. These kids are cute but i personally wouldnt rethink just putting them in Gap. Kids grow out of things and these pricey items will end up in the bin. What a waste. Designer kids? Dont get.

  12. Those girls are… stunning. Like really. God ! Can’t imagine how they’ll look like in like 20 years ! I almost hate them but they are soooo cute !
