Body Lines

>> I won't ever be a true minimalist – this much I know.  Too much mess, noise and hair wafting about,  disturbing the mill pond-esque stillness and tranquility of minimalism.  I am however trying to appreciate the strength of a graphic line without trying to add too much distraction.    Trying, being the operative word.  I think I require some sort of an outfit eraser, one which minimises and distills outfits to its essential core – oh right, there are probably a great deal of readers out there, constantly hatching ways of trying to erase parts of my outfits in their heads.  I don't mind vocal suggestions of this erasing process.  I find myself wanting to impose the eraser on myself sometimes.  Put it down to old age.

Anyhow, the strong lines of certain pieces that I currently have are certainly ones that don't need any disruption such as this Yves Saint Laurent knit dress that I picked up at Reciproque in Paris.  I *think* it's something from the Pilati-era but I can't be entirely sure.  I've paired it with the David Koma for Topshop skirt which is equally strong although it's slightly softened by the camel shade.

Swoosh lines everywhere when you turn to the back due to all the criss-cross turns of the knit…

The lines get ruler straight in this Anthony Vaccarello assymetric grey jersey dress that is controlled by some clever metal rods to keep the shape of the toga formation at the front.  There's a mesh lining though that provides further contouring.  It happens to be the most luxurious bit of grey jersey I own, not to be mixed up with the old AA vests and sweatshirts.  I think I've said all that can be said about Vaccarello's particular kind of fashion empowering prowess but the proof is in the wearing and in control and discplined is certainly how I'm feeling.  I actually feel fairly ok about using the outfit eraser in this instance given that I don't think this dress could take the addition of a print or texture element.  Still, the temptation is always there… a touch of neon?  A shot of fuschia?  Oh dear, I'm slipping again…

(This particular piece actually sold out in colette and Browns though Kirna Zabete still has it online)

P.S. In case you feel I'm in fashion-la-la-land, talking about sexy graphic lines, and ignoring what is going on in Japan, I'm trying to make amends.  In truth, fashion week somehow manages to cut you off current affairs, and whilst it's repugnantly voluntary, when you're filing copy until 3am everyday and Tweetdeck is just filled with lines like "xxx show is five minutes late/serving macaroons for lunch", it's unfortunately par for course.  I don't want to get pensive and wistful about the whole thing.  Just donate as much as you can to British Red Cross (I bunged up a DIY ad on the right hand side) and let's hope for the best.

  1. hahaa, I know what you mean about needing an outfit eraser, although i think i might be the opposite- sometimes I get a bit eraser happy and stick to things that are just too simple…there’s no fun in that! You look stunning though, as always, and I’m now madly in love with that second dress. gah.

  2. I like both outfits a lot – I don’t think fushia would hurt that second dress much .

  4. The second look is pretty cool but who the hell can afford that dress for $2000?

  5. @Jaykee : It seems some people can afford if it sold out at Colette and Browns …
Love both of your looks Susie ! AMAZING as always !

  6. It’s true personal style posts get loads of comments! I love the first look, it’s a drool-worthy combination. The YSL dress is to die for.
You should be proud of your style! I’d never want to subtract bits from the outfits you compile because they always work in your own unique Susie bubbly kind of way.

  7. I am quite minimal (to a point) so understand what you are saying 😉 Top outfit is to die for, so clean cut and minimal on the front, turn around and a whole different outfit.

  8. Looking very sleek and understated! I’ve been trying to dress in a more minimal way recently. When I saw a friend recently I was wearing a mere one dress and she said “what’s happened to you? You’re normally waering about six dresses and two pairs of socks!” An exaggeration, I promise.

  9. I like how you paired that strong top with the nude skirt in the first outfit but I love the second outfit much more…great style!!

  10. “I like the mishmash of your outfit! The Floral Skirt is without a doubt fab with your Plaid Skirts It just goes together right..
