Finger Lickin’ Gold

I've just noticed that the word 'gold' crops EXCESSIVELY up in my iTunes in both song titles and artists (Santogold, Gold Panda, The Golden Filter – all right up there in my Top Gold artists…).  In my wardrobe however, I've not got a lot of that shiny hue, save for the odd piece that I'm not ashamed to say belong to the 'ironic trashy gold' bin – vintage prom dresses, shirts in all kinds of scratchy lame I might pull out in throngs of excitement and jump around doing poor Goldmember impressions – the sort of costume bling that shouldn't be near an open flame.  I have nothing that equal these pieces that have been given the delicate gold touch courtesy of Tim Ryan's S/S 11 collection.  It's been a while since I've touched base with his collections and seeing as he STILL resists the urge to get himself a website, I have to rely on Browns to keep me up to date which his collection whereabouts.  Oi Ryan, you WILL bend to my website-wanting ways, you hear?  Now log onto GoDaddy.com before someone parks on your web turf and demands ¬£2million (grrrr… if I ever get hold of the bastard who's squatting on StyleBubble.com…).

The gold swings about in skirts and dresses of metallic knit, balanced out with light grey, black and candy pink to take the shine off what is already a non-brassy shade of gold.  Gone are the heavy layers of fringing and the 70s cocktail lounge vibe of Ryan's past few collections and instead we have a softer level of swooshing, best seen in the double layered skirt that combines ra-ra and straight mid-calf length into one.  There is something "of another time" about the styling and the pieces themselves that I can't quite put my finger on, which is probably a good thing.  Seeing as I traditionally always pare Tim Ryan's collections with a song, I've chosen to eschew anything remotedly related to gold and instead have gone with an old favourite that maybe sums up the indescribable mix of nostalgia and a little something extra…

  1. that (i want to say tee, but not really?) gold top is so similar to the design and fabric of a top i have. the gold with the wine red is a perfect colour match, I never realised.

  2. love these outfits! a pop of gold will definitely be something that i will look for now. i doubt i could pull off a completely golden look, but golden details are always subtle. like golden embroidery on shoulders of dresses. thanks for this!

    Detest these companies.

  4. I really like the draping of the fourth skirt down. But the lighting of the photos is a bit gloomy, I feel like the gold might have been played up more in brighter light? Or perhaps he was deliberately trying to minimise the impact, to make it less “tacky”…

  5. The gold is luxe.
    The music even more so.
(I have a Sufjan Stevens tattoo)
The skirts make me miss my grandmother.

  6. I’m not usually a metallics fan however i’m suddenly into them with my collection i’m designing i’ve got this waaaaaay yum metallic jacquard and a copper coloured coated jersey that i’m really looking forward to using. Funny how you can hate something for ages then go totally the opposite!

  7. these photos are so striking, the model, the clothes teamed with sufjan stevens, really cool, great post!

  8. Yeap, it’s strange that some people refuse to have websites. I followed the link to Browns exitedly because I’m a huge fan of gold, but the dresses there are quite different. Beautiful nontheless, very lurex Alaia-like, but not like these here. Will have to investigate further…
