Invisi Lines Part II

Try as you might but reaching out for these fine fine lines that Jackie J.S. Lee, one of the newest additions to this season's New Gen gang is a hard task because as I said before, her work must be S.E.E.N. to really understand what it is that Lee is striving for.  I hesitate to say perfection because, hey – WHAT does that even mean?  Or even that oft-used word-of-the-moment minimalism (though a reaction is well on its way for S/S 11, no?).  But it is definitely an attempt at grappling with those words, stamped with own signature.  Of course with lines this clean, it's hard not to draw comparisons – with Jil Sander, Helmut Lang or the like – but for S/S 11 it becomes slightly more well-rounded, as though Lee is gaining confidence with her invis-lines and painting them onto silhouettes that are less restrictive and even playful in some cases.

It helps hugely that I'm getting tiny vibes of Hardy Amies' costume designs for Space Odyssey 2001 and French space-agist designers (Courreges, Cardin, Rabanne) spinning of the pieces.  That said, the smidges of those aforementioned designers and references are only small because anything that goes remotely literal is quickly stopped sharply with Lee's tailoring and her instilling familiar and recognisable elements – a shirt collar, a cuff, a shirt button front line, using that padded and raised technique of hers.  This time round, collars and belts have also been worked into using plastic inserts – all seamlessly and without my having to go "Oh LOOK!  It's PLASTIC!"  Plays on opacity, as per the show-and-reveal game that everyone is having a go at playing this season, is also seen in chiffon vertical stripes running down skirts or in sheer organza skirts themselves.  Add all of this to a choppiness in length variation and it's definitely a less rigorous proposition than the A/W 10-11 collection (on sale at Harrods if any of you wanna feel up those raised collars…).  There's fun to be had in these clothes even if you don't immediately detect it.  Ok, perhaps not the kind of fun that messy me has (too much ketchup/sloppy sauces and bum-creasing sit downs…) but I'm sure there's a legion of well-mannered and sylph-like girls who can do these justice.

  1. Original, clean, surrealistic, genius. Love it!
this is the real art of fashion, not stupid ugly untasty exaggerated Galliano /Vestwood or nice boring totally wearable and totally seen-before-and-nothing-new almost all big names of fashion

  2. Thanks! Glad to see more pics – I love this even more than Autumn/Winter 2010 with these new touches of see-throughness.

  3. Great shots. There is something so serene and ethereal with the lighter-haired model; her expressions appear so natural. Lovely! xx
