You’re Such a Pom

>> I'm off to Vintage at Goodwood for a day that will be like a fun fun school trip minus the stinky egg mayo sandwiches.  I was also doing homing/nesting things all day long yesterday (that mammoth clear out has given way to over 200 things that's going towards the yard sale… Preen trousers, Hussein Chalayan skirt, Vivienne Westwood dresses… err… yes, I'm being mighty ruthless) so all in all, apologies for the lack of a peep.  I do want to thank everyone for giving some very good food for thought on the previous cultural appropriation post to which I will absolutely reply with something vaguely sensible.

Another fruit that a reader bore was a link on Etsy, whilst being a marketplace for many a creative endeavour can also be somewhere which sells the most bizarre things.  I THINK what I'm seeing though here, is something that is bizarre in a good way… these skirts made by Katie of POOFskirts who has come up with these bendable hoop skirts (goes into a figure of 8…handy for festivals apparently…) adorned with various formation of pom poms.  Now, I had a mild fascination with neon pom poms once… but I never of course took it to this level…

My radar may be far far off from breathing in fumes of spray mount and too much heady coffee from Present… but there's something about the closely packed formation of the strings of pom poms that makes for something REMOTELY pleasing about these skirts.  Just gotta get away from the idea that I might look like a gabba girl…

…especially when you wear them with the matching hair pom poms…

In more muted colours, the options start opening up and with the oodles of texture flooding in for next season, I'm probably bizarre making the connection that these skirts are merely the exaggerated and literal form of Thakoon's teensy tiny muted pom pom fall pieces that I loved (Nicole Phelps dubbed them 'cutesy'… I say, go forth with the pom pom action…)…

With a specific set of colour instructions perhaps in an Alchemy-type set up and could this skirt be making its way into a figure of 8 to be shoved into a gap somewhere or hung up like a dream catcher…?

Or perhaps I have taken in one too many whiffs of the spray mount…

  1. Oh you read the mail! 😀 In addition to your old DIY pom pom post, I remember seeing a sheer skirt somewhere with neon flakes or pom poms sewn in, I think it was in some graduation collection from the Antwerp Academy, a long time ago…hmmm

  2. Oh yeah, I discovered this seller a while ago… I like the idea of the skirts but I’m not so keen on them being made out of pompoms.
I think a long skirt in this style (but made of material other than pompoms) could be great, though.

  3. Quite Romance Was Born from a few seasons ago but even more interesting!

  4. If I was 20, this would be such a fun party skirt, but at my (advanced) age of 48, I think my friends might throw a blanket over me if I showed up in one of these. Susie, I dream of being able to come to one of your yard sales!!!

  5. If I was on acid and was a raver… I get where you’re going but it just looks like tacky rave gear.

  6. Those are kind of spectacular and ingenious, and makes me realize I might not have the guts to wear them out! Ack! After writing about style confidence lately, it’s disconcerting to find a piece that makes me reevaluate my own limits! (My 11-yr old sister just came in the room & she adores them.) Thanks for sharing the whimsy!

  7. Thank you so much for featuring a few of my skirts, though the best have yet to be photographed. I wish that I had a video to show you how they swirl around ones body while walking or dancing – that’s the real magic.

  8. I think these are hideous and tacky and cheesy. They have a white-trash raver quality to them that makes me nauseous, it doesn’t help that the model is unshapley and poorly styled. Blech!
