I’d Rather Be A Wild Poppy…

>> Somebody once again spoke to me about Tall Poppy Syndrome in reference to my blog, that people want to 'cut' you down when you grow too 'tall'.  I don't want to be tall.  I don't even think I AM tall with regards to the blog.  I'm happy being of average height, ta very much.  Is it ok to want to be a wiiilllld poppy instead of a tall one?

Which weirdly and very oddly brings me to these new Doc Martens which are happily on my feet… they're a 1461 Made in England shoe with a Black WILD POPPY printed leather that is sort of like a deadstock leather now because the factory that makes it has gone bust.  The shoes and matching 1460 boots are also in a limited run of ten (in store now at the Covent Garden and Spitalfields store).  I missed out on the Dr Martens factory visit in Woolaston, something that I was dying to do but these Made in England limited beauties more than makes up for it.  Tommy of This Is Naive took us on a jaunt to a secret garden (ok not so secret…just behind the Odeon on Shaftesbury Avenue…) and I was most pleased indeed there were no tall poppies growing…

  1. Ohhh I just discovered Phoenix Gardens! Such a hidden gem – I love it. Work nearby but just found it a week ago. Beautiful. I’ve been following your blog on and off for several years since back when I lived in Sweden. Now I live in London and realise I’m physically likely to bump in to you! Especially when I see things like this. Love this blog and your style and work. Karin

  2. Amazing shoes – reminds me of a pair I had as a child. They were Doc Martin and had a similar flower pattern on them. Wish I still had them/could fit into them!

  3. How come style bubble’s last 3 posts have got 11, 2 and 19 comments whereas fashiontoast’s last 3 posts have got 219, 91 and 261 comments?
I thought style bubble was supposed to be way more popular than fashiontoast? :S

  4. Though I still firmly believe that you are one of the nicest people on earth πŸ˜‰ I guess you can’t avoid the Tall Poppy Syndrome when your blog (or whatever you do) has reached a certain size (and being quoted by the NY Times mag as the source for Olivier Theyskens latest statement is pretty big in my world). But as you once so kindly said to me: Just do what you love! (Thank you again for that) and you also get consolation from the German saying: Viel Feind viel Ehr’.
@ Aya re commenting. I don’t think there is a necessary correlation between how much a blog is read and how many comments posts get. I think Mr Schumann gets more than 100k hits/day. Just imagine… 100,00 comments, phew!

  5. … now I totally forgot the fashion – florals, yay! Floral Doc Martens – double yay! Now we just need some sun to take our florals for a spin.
P.S. I wanted to say you MIGHT get consolation from the german saying, not you will; it’s pretty martial. Now I’m going to shut up!

  6. Well I love poppies!
What a lovely mix of floral prints. I want those trousers so, with the rest of my wardrobe being so floral a pair of floral trousers is only natural.
Just got my copy of Vogue- I’m not normally a huge fan of the age issue but I like the look of this one. I love your Kane/Wang/Topshop ensemble, it’s so pretty!

  7. Aya: It’s ok… are you per chance getting your ranking ideas from Fashionista? By popularity – this could mean a lot of things… traffic, incoming links… in general, I don’t get as many comments as say Fashion Toast but I also may have a bigger proportion of silent readers…I don’t really think it’s possible to have concrete rankings but Signature 9 does a pretty good one if you want to investigate it…
Also, I post about three times a day and Fashion Toast spaces her posts a little further out… last on the 26th (two days ago), then 22nd…
Still, not sure why I’m justifying these things… it links to this particular post I guess about being labelled a ‘tall’ poppy but not necessarily being one…
Florrie: Wow…it’s out already??? I haven’t seen the images yet…. they actually shot another image with an outfit I prefer….gonna try and see if I can get them!

  8. The only reason I would cut you down is to easily steal those beautiful shoes–LOVE your blog, if you stop writing I will find you and punch you in the face. You’ve been warned.

  9. It’s very obvious that Fashion Toast is a much bigger, more popular blog than Style Bubble, but that doesn’t mean it’s better πŸ˜‰

  10. oh god why the need to compare and judge bloggers for who is popular and who isn’t. Each blogger is different and has its own purpose, no need to call out who is bigger or better. Besides I don’t know anyone who has more than 40k twitter followers like Susie does.
I love that sheer shirt with weird petals adorned on the arms!

  11. I love it! It takes a true fashionista with confidence to get away with fraternal patterns (as I call closely matching but not quite similarities…think twins πŸ™‚ )

  12. ooooohh makes me think of a cool asian grandma
hmm I hope that didn’t come out sounding insulting haha
You and Kingdom of Style are constantly inspiring a huge love of mesh/sheer in me! <3<3<3

  13. I think you are a tall poppy and should be proud of it. Success comes with some baggage to be sure. But I think it’s worth it.

  14. These just reminded me of the long-forgotten pair I had when I was 6, just like this but boots and patent. God I loved those shoes!
