Hardening Up

>> Over 500 photos still to offload from the A/W 10-11 press days (which are far from over…), two dead eyeballs rolling around with relief to come when some new glasses come along (some Prism frames will be mine soon…!) and a pesky cold thingy lolling around this old corpse.  Still, what are Good Fridays for, if NOT to sit around watching Sound of Music, eating chocolate and tapping away in an effort to offload some of the memory card baggage.  I can also console myself with the fact I didn't join the ridiculous scrummage that went down at Brick Lane for the American Apparel sale (I added this in just as my sister who is Facebook savvy has been updating me with the goss…) 

I've been spotting some ways to get hard be it through embellishment, leather-clad hands or clawing jewellery.  Not that I'm in any way a 'hard' nut or a toughed out kinda girl but seeing as I can only forsee another bitterly cold winter, some added bits of hardware here and there, whilst not being physically warming could add mental strength and in my head, I could be thinking that the cold could be withstood.

First up, Roksanda Ilincic's 70s-inflected sassy shapes could well be…err… just that… pure soft sass.  The addition of these bits of metal goodness including blocks of long beads, stacks of metal rings and copper flower clusters contrast with the sumptuous fabrics that Ilincic favours.

Next up, Nina Peter, whose eensy weensy half glove I wrote about a while ago, has expanded her glove range so that there are some that actually keep the hands warm.  Not that warmth is that much of a consideration when you can feel like a 'cooooooool rider' with these leopard print fingerless gloves (enhanced by my accidental red polish….)

Finally, there's Dominic Jones animalistic new collection for A/W 10-11… bones of extinct species, insectamology, the sharper edges of dinosaur anatomy… I'm just taking wild stabs at where these pieces could have been derived from.  Without needed to get too exacting with these jewellery species, they are above all, striking to say the least.  No prizes for guessing my favourite pieces are the gloves with the copper beak-like formation cupping the thumbs as well as the lower arm cuff which looks like it might bite my head off.

  13. Sister Wolf: You most certainly can…actually even Hannah notes the similarity I think…. Hannah’s jewellery is superior in terms of materials though (hence the higher price points…)

    I would just like to reassure you that whatever similarities there are between my work and Hannah Martins is a genuine coincidence.
    I was not aware of Hannah Martins work untill i joined RelativeMo a good while after i had finished my first collection and meet Hannah Marshall who introduced me to it.
    I do myself see the similarities in a couple of our pieces but i can assure you that similarities is all they are. the claw ring’s in my first collection are design studies of a lion claw my friend gave me 3 years ago. Hannah’s are abstract forms.

  20. King Ink: Please do clarify what you are referring to.
    Dominic, I’m glad you replied… I thought it was a coincident too… when I said that Hannah noted the similarity, I didn’t mean that she was insinuating anything, just that she is aware that there are coincidental similarities… Dominic or otherwise…I only noted this from speaking to her PR…
    As for my comment about a higher quality of materials… I only guesstimate this from the price point differences (from what I remember…) and the fact that Hannah uses 18ct gold and precious/semi-precious materials in her work…
    There’s room for both (and others!) to co-exist…! Hopefully nobody took offence… I’m a fan of both and to be honest, I see a difference in aesthetic anyway…

To add a further comment in lieu of my initial response to Sister Wolf, what I meant by ‘You certainly can…’ was that I Sister W is entitled to her own opinion as I wouldn’t want to censor negative/opposing opinions on the blog… and to further clarify, I don’t ACTUALLY agree with Sister Wolf’s initial comment about Dominic Jones’ work… hopefully, this wasn’t mis-construed…see my comment above about the two designers’ work…
