Proenza 10 Proenza 2

>> I'm overdosing on baked goods in New York, via episodes of Cake Boss and tons of recommendations of various bakeries around town which must be part of some ploy to get me two sizes bigger before I return to London.  I thought I'd round up the fashion-related baked goods which have weirdly enough been concentrated all into the week gone by.  First up, some of you might have seen the magnificent Proenza Schouler S/S 10 cake seen on The Kitchy Kitchen (made in honour of her sister's last day at Who What Wear) where the iridescent shimmery skirt has been lengthened quite a bit.  Not sure about that amount of volume that's going on in the dessicated coconut mound but I of course as always am intrigued by the idea of a long column skirt in those surf-inspired colours.

At the Blow PR press days last week, thanks to some cupcake lollys by Molly Bakes, I stopped myself from passing out.  Molly, who once studied fashion design, also helped some of Blow's designers realise their cake vision, both involving very flexible and malleable dolls.  The Barbie/Sindy doll overflowing with red icing locks was imagined by Charlie Le Mindu, who is branching out from his wig creations (below left) and I'm excited to see what he has up his sleeve next season as a little birdie told me it will blow my little mind away.  The second cake where an Action Man is apparently sinking into a bog because he's just been ditched by Barbie (the floozy…she's run off with Ken quite clearly!), is modelled after one of crazy milliner Piers Atkinson's creations from his A/W 10-11 collection (below right).  Underneath the black sludge was a delish Victoria sponge apparently…

I didn't tuck into any of them, but hopefully someone had the heart to tear them apart…

  1. haaaa love it 🙂
hope you’re finding more things in ny to entertain yourself – i *wish* i was there right now xx

  2. great cakes, i wonder what people do with the dolls after they’ve finished the cake (or do they just give them back so they can be recycled again in a new cake?)

  3. Thanks so much for posting the Proenza Cake, and I promise it’s not a mound of straight coconut 🙂 It’s a vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting and a little coconut on the outside, and the inside (my sister tweeted it here: http://tweetphoto.com/17801340) is a green and blue ombre fade. My sister and I grew up with the princess dolly cakes, so these are always a ton of fun. If you liked this one you should check out our Rodarte (nothing like barbie with tribal tats! http://thekitchykitchen.blogspot.com/2009/12/codol.html) Love the blog and thanks for the shout out!
