90s Vintage

CIMG1041My initial 90s retrogading post was spawned because of the new concept store that has opened up in Selfridges's Wonder Room where the 90s is being saluted as a 'vintage era'.  This not so distant-past time leap opened up last night and seeing as I had instigated a dialogue on the 90s, I definitely wanted to pop along to see how many of your 90s memories, tidbits and references popped up in the store.

Of course, it is all in the name of commerce so it's not really meant to be treated as a proper 90s retrospective but still, even within the relatively small space of the Wonder Room, I still managed to get a memory jogs, both pleasant and cringing as well as glimpsing into fashion moments of that decade that of course would not have touched upon my life back then when I was busy trying to learn Latin conjugations and worried about whether my D.T. project would be handed in on time.

On one wall, I've already spotted some so-naff-it's-good throwbacks… Kickers, Jansport and bleeding' record bags.  I say bleedin' because the straps on one of the record bags I owned (you were nobody without a decent record bag!) actually did cut into my shoulders so much so that it bled.  At a 13th birthday party when one side of the room was populated with boys, too chicken to ask the girls to dance, I think over 80% of them wore Kickers… an acceptable 'party going out' shoe for teenage boys.

My favourite part of the store were the seminal publications that IDEA Books (they curate the selection at Dover Street Market and popped up in St Martins Lane Hotel for a while…) had put on display…

Ah… Leo in that early period just on the cusp of R&J/Titanic fame… // Winona Ryder who I girl-crushed heavily after watching Heathers one too many times…

The Decade of Kate Moss's… actually the noughties were also sort of 'her' decade… ah ok, we geddit, she was everywhere…

CIMG1001

Lol at my sister fancying Matt Dillon at some point back then…

Whenever I read interviews with Christopher Kane and he recalls all these great memories about him and Tammy being Versace-obsessed, I'm always wondering what they're referring to seeing as I WASN'T a Versace devotee when I was err…13… what I wouldn't give for those metallic pastel ensembles in the middle…

CIMG0996

90s sunnies…which strangely look like frames from the 70s/80s….recycling decades indeed…

Beyond Retro have been given a section to reflect an 'authentic' 90s uniform which of course is difficult given the spanning of ten years can produce a ton of different styles as some of you pointed out in my last post about the 90s. It did jog a few memories though in terms of hunting out for vintage in general.  My love of vintage lingerie definitely was founded in the late 90s when Just-17 kept using vintage ones in their shoots.  Actually, even just speaking generally, I've lost count how many times a giant tulle petticoat skirt from Beyond Retro has been used in shoots in British publications…

I wouldn't say denim jackets and plaid shirts is that much of a time leap… come on fess up… how MANY plaid shirts do you own, guys and gals?

I particularly loved their selection of floral dungarees/maternity wear…. I indulged and bought the one in the middle, the one with Paquette in the label… it's clown meets floral really with its ballooning pants and highwaisted-ness…

Rellik provided the not so familiar parts of the 90s sartorial dialogue.  I was reminded of my initial experience with Rellik and how it used to scare the bejeeeesus out of me.  I think I first went there when I was 16 and gingerly looked through the racks, whilst working out the prices in my head…"¬£350 for an Alaia skirt equals err… two year's worth of Chinese New Year money… wowzer!"  Not surprisingly they bought a set of choice picks to Selfridges…  because…well, everything in Rellik IS choice and yes, I'm still a 14 year old girl when it comes to the clothes in question…

  1. I love this even if some what ironically. I mean, this looks like a thrift store of the nineties, 70s inspired and Ghost World era inspiration. No 112 albums for sale? lol I kid.

  2. what a backflash!!! i love the clothes, all of them. how funny we are wearing stuff like this today again. becaus it’s COMPLETELY like this!
oh and the magazines are awesome, too, especially the leo-covers! 😀

  3. I’m not keen on the Alaia, they could have picked something better. Also, I can’t say “Alaia” without picturing Cher (the teenage girl, not the rockstar).

  4. Hmm, I don’t know that I see the 90s as vintage quite yet… 80s are kind of the vintage limit for me.

  5. As someone who was 6 when the 90s ended, I still say it was one of the best decades. And I am beyond proud to say I am the same age as Friends 🙂 I am so jealous of poeple who are ten years older then me, they would have actually known then 90 a little more…

  6. Crazy…how it all comes round again, this makes me feel so old! Looking forward to seeing what that floral romper looks like in an outfit of yours! This looks like so much fun to rummage!

  7. I feel so nostalgic when I think about the 90’s, though I was a little young to REALLY be into a lot of stuff, but I was aware through my older brother. The 90’s for me makes me think about Pogs, “Are you afraid of the dark” on YTV, Pokemon, floral everything, discmans, hilarious dance music… I guess not so many fashion memories because I wasn’t really into it when I was younger but when I look at old photos of myself they are ridiculously 90’s looking.

  8. Oh floral dungarees please!
I was only ickle in the 90s so my clothes from the era are many, many times too small and therefore need grown up versions to replace them.
    Florrie x

  9. Oh cripes. I suddenly feel horribly, horribly old. Although I’m quite liking getting a thumbs up to wear pieces which have a really nostaligic feel for me.

  10. I love it I love it I love it. I remember wearing those florals as a 90s kid, but in leggings 😉
And actually 3 plaid shirts isn’t enough for me :p
    Truly inspiring!

  11. YAY! Love this! Really the 90’s were really sexy with the tight clothes with cut out patterns etc. Very sweet post, love all the pictures!

  12. Oddly I identify a lot with the seminal publications display. Leo was a big big thing for me, and most teen/young adult movies that time. Also, the floral jumpers. Or just jumpers in general, which I think stems from my 90’s revolving around Nickelodeon tv shows. You may or may not relate with Clarissa Explains It All and shows like that, being in the UK, but I think the Philippines didn’t really quite move on from being a US colony after all these years. Almost everyone I know around my age would testify that Nickelodeon on cable defined an enjoyable part of the decade.
I wish we had concept stores in Manila… XD

  13. Talking of amazing old school style, I was watching a French film called ‘Diva’ the other day and there’s a character in it that reminds me so much of you!

  14. very much looking forward to an outfit with the floral dungarees, how cool! in fact you may have posted one, i’ll have to get through googlereader first!! the 90s was a great decade for taking ugly things and making them pretty

  15. Yeah, hmmmph.
For those geriatrics amongst us that came of age in the 90s and actually experienced it firsthand, I can’t imagine the reaction being anything more than mild bemusement.
It was just a very ugly decade. Anyone saying otherwise didn’t understand the aesthetic or the appeal of what we were trying to say.
“the 90s was a great decade for taking ugly things and making them pretty”
    Oh lord.

  16. i now feel 1,000 years old, as i wore many of those pieces to do things like go to the limelight. GASP!
