Barney

This is Barney… he may not technically be a barn owl as Muji did not specify but I'm thinking he is because the white cardboard dictates so… (fyi, he was also really satisfying to construct so I'd highly recommend buying a few of Muji's cardboard cut-outs to waste away an hour…)

This Gemma Degara dress from her A/W 09 collection also features a barn owl, which makes sense considering the collection is called "Sleepless Nights".  I only got it this week and haven't quite found the all-nighter night to wear it yet…

The point I'm really trying to make though is that owls have had their time but it's normally the 'typical' owls (tawny in Britain…or to put it scientifically from the strigidae family) are the ones that get manifested as cute necklaces, brooches, scarves and prints (remember that influx of owl-ness a few years back?).  But for me, who's slightly scared of the hawk-like stares of some species of owls is far preferring the gentler looking barn owl on these prints.  Christian Wijnants also featured the barn owl in his woodland-inspired prints for his S/S10 collection.  I took these up-close pictures of the prints when he took his collection to Philadelphia for the Arts of Fashion event.

Moving away from my random owl observation, I loved the frayed textures that Wijnants lavished on his pieces evoking mossy textures and frayed soft feathers/dandelion seeds.

I've been sitting on these pics I took at his presentation in Paris Fashion Week which demonstrate the actual shapes of garments and the feathery textures better…

  1. These look great I remeber having a picture at school with an owl just like barney! 😛

  2. I’m surprised that you find barn owls gentler looking, for me they look more frightening like they are wearing a mask or like monsters in Japanese folklore. I actually like that about them, but they do generally strike me as a little creepy.
I love the Gemma Degara dress, can’t wait to see how you wear it.

  3. Oh I’m quite jealous you got the Gemma Degara dress! I love owls. And not just because of Harry Potter (I swear!).

  4. Ganymede Girl: I don’t know why I find them less menacing looking…I think it’s the yellow eyes in some owls and the very very black pupils together with the slightly more hooked beak that makes them look scarier… and they always look a little stern looking…
That said, I’ve not physically been in contact with any kind of owl since I was 8 and visiting a bird sanctuary…

  5. wow, incredible. i love the diaphanous quality of the fabric mixed with the imagery. your dress is amazing!!!
    xo

  6. that Gemma Degara dress is stunning!! I’ve always loved barn owls. . . my favorite stuffed animal when i was five (a gift from my dad when i went to the emergency room for the 5th time that year for being accident prone) was a white snowy owl. I loved it so hard until it disappeared one day from my cubby. I always believed that it had needed to fly away. anywho, love the dress, can’t wait to see how you wear it. xx molly
