Gooooooorilla!

>> Ok, so I know I'm not known for posting madly iconic pictures a la Jak and Jil namely because I'm distinctly lacking in an eye for composition.  But rather than bunging this pic in a deets piccy post, I thought it deserved a post on its own (ok, I'm also on my way out in about 10 mins…).  Most people will know my utter repugnance for the phrase 'faux-pas' and all its odious conontations and I suppose looking at this pic, some people will be thinking that exact thing…. except yesterday for some reason the Christopher Kane mood was kicking in (perhaps it's something to do with his collection hitting Topshop on Friday…), and not one, not two but six of these shirts were floating around the Marc by Marc Jacobs show despite its ¬£250 pricetag…I'll leave these two folks annonymous though some might already have it sussed out already… I rather like the double gorilla roar effect…

  1. It’s tragic. I love fashion, I love stupid clothes and nice clothes. I even buy dumb overpriced things because I love them and the cache that goes with them, I’ll admit it. But this shirt is oveeerrated. It’s so flashy and so obviously C.Kane it may as well just have a big fat logo on it saying “I BUY EXPENSIVE STUFF. I KNOW WHAT’S COOL. CHECK ME OUT”. I mean honestly, imagine spending ¬£250 on a tshirt (i checked them out in Liberty and they are nothing very special construction-wise) to find five other people in the same things. But my sympathy is rather limited…

  2. I want one of those crocodile t-shirts really really badly, shame I have no money. Thankyou for writing such a informative blog, when you have to study you don’t have as much time to trawl through fashion blogs. x

  3. I don’t know, I was going to buy one of those croc T-shirts on Friday but now I don’t know if they’re going to be a little bit… you know, overdone. It’s like rebecca above says: it kind of just screams LOOK AT ME I BUY CHRISTOPHER KANE.
Maybe I’m just bitter because I can’t afford it!

  4. Eh, I am so whatever about the concept of faux pas. Fashion is about feeling good about what you’re wearing, and if you want to feel immersed in the Christopher Kane world via t-shirt, I say go for it. These two may not have been feeling that sharp in a sea of CK but this picture is gold!

  5. I bought it because of the hit thing going on… I know that it will not last forever and after 4 month I will be board of it but if I found it in my closet in 4 years I will be thinking of the beginning of CK and the crazy periode I was living.
U look fab with the Luxirare jacket
    xx

  6. I LOVE these shirts. I spent £200 on one. It gives me immense pleasure to wear it, not least becasue it freaks the hell out of people. Also to be honest I have only met one other person who even knew it was designer. Do I give a toss that its now faux pas, erm nope. Will I wear it for the next million years? Hell yes becasue it has a bloody great monekey on the front!! LOL Also it is extreamly good quality and rather very special. Oh and yep I too will be in the Topshop que. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THESE TEES!

  7. Is one of them Tommy from Jak & Jil? I thought I passed by you guys around W. Broadway area last night (it was mostly the Gorilla Tee that caught my eye first I must admit)!

  8. Is it socially wrong of me to hate those shirts? Not that I don’t think gorillas are beautiful. I just don’t think these shirts have any kind of a beautiful quality, unless you’re a fan like Jane Goodall.

  9. loveeeeee that shirt.
love christopher kane & topshopp….check out the Christopher Kane for Topshop video on my bloggg it’s insaneee.
it’s in the archives somewhere on your right 😉

  10. Haha, Christopher Kane is just not for me. My taste is far more modern minimalism stylee. I liked a few pieces this last season but I think most of his stuff has been totally overrated. That terrible snake print and denim collection from a few seasons ago… shudder. Not as bad as the awful Henry Holland though…

  11. topshop is one of your “biggest fans” a

    I prefere of course yours!
designer fashion sucks… I regret all the money i spend in those stupid designer brands… which isn’t worth it.
don’t pay for the brand! only you get it for free than it rocks lol
    like the way you are.
    keep it up!

  12. do you think the items are going on sale at midnight on (thurs night/fri early early morning??) i’m in the states and far from NYC so i’m trying to figure out how to procure a few of these items via internet! i’m excited!

  13. That is an incredible price for a t-shirt… but hey we see plenty of plain t-shirts all the time, why not see a lot of a gorilla tee? Lol…

  14. hmmm… this has definitely put me off further buying the tee from kane’s collection. sigh. its still a cool tee though. decisions decisions. maybe an intensely strappy leather harness obscuring a lot of the print would improve on the obvious “guess where i got this” vibes?
    xoxo

  15. Ok, first off, anatomically that print looks like a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes). The size of the canines and the diastema between the incisors and the canines are just wrong for a gorilla. Plus, the mandible is not as oversized and the supraorbital torus is also reduced – not something you’d expect for a gorilla. I cannot tell if there is a sagital crest given the view. And, it was Dian Fossey who studied gorillas; Jane Goodall studies chimpanzees. FYI 😉

  16. this t-shirt is so gorgeous- it’s like the best souvenir we can get in a zoo!

  17. I know everyone is going crazy over Mr Gorilla, but personally I think the shirt is but ugly. There, I said it. I hate it. It’s like the poor Gorilla is being tortured and in pain. And then to see it 6 times at one show? Man, that just makes me think that people are 1. sadistic and 2. unoriginal. Ugh.

  18. They were shocking and cool at first…but now they are blown into a mini-trend they’ve lost their appeal. Besides I still refuse to use my torso to display bad dental work, even if it does belong to a gorilla. Hope you’re having a wonderful day 🙂

  19. From the publicity stand point, the fact everyone is talking about it, whether good or bad, is a success for C.K.- and, then, 6 of them wearing the tee to one of the hottest show in NYFW, that just said all!!! …. i have nothing but respect … hope tons of them will be sold ;-))) xoxo

  20. GOD, those are just AWFUL >:-(
Don’t get me wrong. Christopher Kane does some AMAZING stuff, but these T-shirts with the huge croc/guerilla print? Absolutely grotesque. Although of course, fashion is about having different tastes/opinions in clothing. This is mine…Yes, they’re kind of “original” (if we forget those hideous souvenir t-shirts with huge animal photos that used to be sold at EVERY zoo that for some reason we had to buy as kids, haha), but so is other much nicer stuff. And it’s funny how now that it’s got the ‘Topshop’ tag on it, people will like/consider wearing it. Take away the name and you’re left with….well…yeah.
