Here comes the science…

… The one and only time you'll see a sole post dedicated to a hoodie on this blog I can assure you and it's really ONLY because it has special magical powers.  This Nike hoodie from their new collection, that I nabbed via work is ostensibly a grey and white cotton sweatshirt-material hoodie…. 100% cotton, and for the most part, looks and feels like the rest of my grey jersey sweatshirt type things…

But then look what happens…cue video… please press play!  I do have a bloody point here…

I've been trying to demonstrate this to as many people as possible just because I'm a clueless doofus, who knows nothing about performance sportswear and thinks this is the coolest thing I've seen a hoodie do since…errr…. well….I guess hoodies don't really do much except be very hood-like.
I've now been fantasising about making a Best TV-type infomercials involving coloured water, test tubes and a cheesy companion that just claps and says "Wow!" a lot.  In reality, I just kept on squealing "It's like Alex Mack!" (Did you watch it avidly?  I did…) and the boyf kept on rebutting me with "Terminator".  On and on it went… Alex Mack, Terminator, Alex Mack, Terminator…

It's most definitely Alex Mack…

  1. whoa, that was really quite mesmerising! And very dramatic with the music. I wish my clothes did that 🙁
    Alex Mack!

  2. Haha, now your legs can get extra wet and soggy with all the rain pouring from that hoddie down your legs…squelch squelch….unless they make it a suit of course????

  3. Dear Susie, would you kindly point to us where this jacket could be found e.g. the collection name? Or maybe it’s not released yet to the general pubic? It’s a pretty stylish-looking hoodie and looks like a good addition to my running outfit. Thanks a lot.

  4. THANKYOU for reminding me of Alex Mack – I watched it all the time, but curiously it never left the same impression on my memory as, say, Clarissa, or Are You Afraid Of The Dark?…
And that hoodie is incredible. Hopefully its high-techness ensures it was made by good old machines, and not children, or whatever Nike use these days. Fingers crossed.

  5. It is actually completely machine washable or so it says…. it’s from the new collection so it isn’t on sale yet…will find out when it is….
RDB…maybe they do have matching trackie bottoms?

  6. There are special detergents for water repellent clothes. I would recommend using that, otherwise the effect might wear off after a few washes… I wish I had a hoodie like that. I would use it as a raincoat here in rainy Gothenburg.

  7. It’s absolutely Alex Mack – that was the best show ever!
I wonder how much it will retail at? I want some scientific clothing! (Particularly in my home town where we have a summertime that lasts about a day…)
Are we going to get pictures of it in real-life action as well? In the interests of scientific experimentation, I think it’s only right…!

  8. Errr….do I look like someone who works out? Unfortunately, the only bit of excercise I get is running for the bus so sadly, no in action shots….but useful for the rain nonetheless

  9. Susie! I love you for remembering Alex Mack!! Totally more Alex Mack…
I remember a guy friend in undergrad having Dockers that did something similar… he was all too proud to pour coke on his jeans and show me how it rolled off…

  10. my first association: like a very odd and cheap take on bjork’s ‘hidden place’ video 😀

  11. loved alex mack too! i wanted to be her basically. i’m all too familiar with “performance” apparel since my boyfriend bikes to work through rain, snow, and hail, he has lots of magical garments like these, haha

  12. Oh gosh, I ALWAYS watched Alex Mack! That tv show was so awesome, she was like my hero. I even read the Alex Mack book series! Spectacular.

  13. I’ve always loved you for your sense of fashion, but now that I know you watched Alex Mack as well, I do believe you’re my hero Susie Bubble.

  14. Oh, I was an AVID fan of that show! LOL.
I used to geek out over my shoes doing something like that after I treated them with waterproofing spray.

  15. It must be magic… I don’t understand, how does it do that if it’s made of 100% cotton? Was it dunked in a special concoction?

  16. Hi All,
The treatment to the fabric to make it water repellant is added at a molecular level so no need for special detergants etc as it cannot be removed from the fabirc. A Large uk highstreet name will be bringing out a range of white denim/linen were stains (ie red wine ) will run off!

  17. I used to work in a shop that sold all kinds of clothes that did this and I used to love demonstrating it to customers. It IS amazing. Also, Alex Mack – I loved her.
Also-also, if it works the same way, and it looks as though it does you can wash it in the machine with normal washing powder – so long as you dont wash any higher than 40degrees. Enjoy your magic clothes! xxx

  18. ha ! i used to loove that show! very cool that sweatshirt…i’ve seen that type of thing before, but the material usually felt stiff…

  19. I love that SONG! And the sweater is quite rad. But the song! What is it??

  20. I wonder what happens when you sweat in it, and if it retains those properties after a few dozen washes.

  21. Yo…. just relaying info here…
“This highly engineered 400-gram organic French Terry cotton also receives an innovative water repellency treatment from Nike Design called DWR – meaning rain simply beads up and rolls off the AW77 hoodie, to help you stay warm and dry in adverse weather conditions.” They tell me it can withstand repetitive washing…
    About availability.
AW77 hoodie will be available in stores and online nikesportswear.com from August the 1st.

  22. Oh my god!!! I had no idea anyone out of the USA knows of Alex Mack! I loved that show growing up! xxx

  23. that was great but couldn’t you have just scotch guarded it?
    loved the song!!

  24. Oh! this really great, i was very fascinated by those hoody.i love it so much..I’m just wondering how they do that. hope to see more hoodies you have here.keep it up!

  25. You may already know this but DWR stands for Durable Water Repellency. There is also PWR for a more ‘Permanent’ finish. DWR is guaranteed to retain 100% repellency for a minimum of 50 washes (but practically will repel effectively for much longer – who spots the difference between 95% and 90% repellency?). PWR is guaranteed for over 100 washes. I’ve never noticed the finish on anything of mine to wear out and it was my work uniform so it’s been well worn and washed. Anyway, v boring technical comment from me over.
I’m just chuffed that other people find this clever stuff as thrilling as I do.
