Oh Animal You Will Get Me

Has some sort snake's spirit crept into my brain?  Are memories of my pet grass snakes coming back to me in waves of nostalgia (I'm not at all snake shy… surprising fact of the day, no?)  Am I in the last stages of battling my distaste for animal print (I have a very singular current fascination with brightly coloured leopard print…damn you S/S 09 Christopher Kane…)?  If the answer is yes, then that goes some way towards explaining why I'm loving Brooke Roberts' debut collection, ESPECIALLY these jackets.  Yes, that's ESPECIALLY the snakeskin print jackets…

Though the jacquard sectioned dresses are lovely too as is the paisley catsuit (has got a certain Queen's name all over it…).  But no, the mind is very much drawn to the snakeskin and angular cutting that Roberts has cultivated through working with Giles Deacon and Louise Goldin.  I'm one of those slow-mos who has never seen Blade Runner despite the fact it's such an oft-quoted fashion reference but that's what Roberts had in mind with this collection.  Of course that inspiration note is irrelevant for me when all I can think about is how Roberts managed to implant a snake spirit in my head?  It's all getting to feel too much like a poor episode of Smallville when dull dullard Clark has to fend off a kid who has had a terrible accident in a snake pit.

  1. Is it wrong that the jacket in the first image reminds me of something Jafar from the Disney version of Aladdin would wear? I’m in love with the black dress. I love how you find so many amazing new designers, they’re so inspiring.

  2. I’ve always loved snakeskin — it was Ossie Clark’s specialty. The first jacket here is a beauty.

  3. I’m all distracted by the patterns. While I do like the pattern, it’s the cut on that jacket that just makes my heart flutter.
