I know I consistently post about Sandra Backlund and frankly, I would just expect those posts like clockwork each season because initally there is a certain amount of nepotism going on (in that she's a friend…) but then actually, then it does go back to meritocracy because the level of her work deserves it.  Errr….not that it's some kind of supreme honour to be posted about here…. it's no Napoleonic medal or anything.

The main reason is that season after season, Backlund's lookbook images always seem to distil the core of her work down to a straight forward point that basically gets seared into your brain making them unforgettable (sadly not the case for a lot of lookbooks….).  These photos of her A/W09-10 collection Control by Peter Gehrke are exactly that; controlled, getting straight to the point of her collaboration with Maglificio Miles, throwing less extreme shapes than previously seen and sticking to one colour, showing a tempered restraint in what is essentially an experiment for Backlund.  No stockists as yet I think but knowing Sandra, she's probably keeping her stream of constant queries with people presuming that she has a large production stream behind her and not realising, that Backlund has flown solo for most of her career (not even daring to take an intern).  An independent to the core and a designer that is demonstrating a different kind of fashion route.

Oh and thanks Knit Kicks for highlighting the fact that Backlund has made a custom piece for a Sony Bravia advert…

**EDIT** Apologies – my bad.  Not sure where Knit Kicks got the information from but the piece in the Sony Bravia ad isn't Sandra Backlund's work… another "Who Dun It?" mystery to solve…

  1. What a cool person to be friends with! Her designs are ridiculously structural and divine, if you get news of stockists will you let us know? I want ALL of the pieces haha.

  2. HM! her work is fab! i love how the material works so well with the shape of the pieces.

  3. argh so jealous of you and your designer friends but cant wait until we get to see you in Backlund, a la Carine in Givenchy!

  4. Waouh I love it ! I really like her vision. The materials are amazing and work perfectly with the shapes.

  5. It’s really rare for me to like something that is kind of futuristic, but I really love these pieces. They are so feminine. I remember you posting about this girl before, how lucky that you are friends!

  6. Wow. I love the first thing especially. Gorgeous gorgeous designs!
Also, I was just wondering where is that dress from which is on the sidebar? It’s you posing in the Topshop Helmut Newton photo machine thing. I’ve been longing for a dress like it ever since I saw it but it’s so unique it’s hard to find one like it! Thanks x

  7. its a massive race to see who can get the futuristic vibe down these days…. opt for big sleeves, and tubey textures… bla bla bla alien bla bla bla

  8. I LOVE IT. she always has amazing lookbooks, the simplicity of this one is very striking. I’ve recently become quite fond of mirroring images. Thanks for the linkage! I reckon that piece is going to be part of her next collection.

  9. Nope, she definitely deserves the attention. These are incredible. And I reallly want that wierd neck wraparound poncho thing or that insane knit jacket in the second last pic (love!)

  10. Her knitting is exquisite. I rwad an interview with her a long time ago, she really does it by herself, but the effect of hurting wrists off course. I´m impressed.

  11. I’d love to spend some time just watching this extraordinarily creative woman knit, I reckon it would be totally mesmerising.
How does she manage to achieve such out of this world sophisticated textures?
I love the pinecone-esque look of the dress in the first pic, amazing!

  12. Sandra’s pieces aren’t freebie material given that they’re all hand knitted! I’m saving the moolah though….
Daniella: That dress is actually a chopped up 70s’ quilted long skirt… it’s such a weird charity shop buy…. I call it my WTF dress…

  13. As a knitter myself, I am consistently amazed by Backlund’s design. She is such a bloody talent!

  14. The things that woman can do with yarn and needles is incredible, she is nothing less than amazing. Everything she makes turns out absolutely stunning.

  15. I love Shapes and huge negative spaces on the body. it creates such an intense contrast. i especially love seeing skinny people wearing larrge heavy looking clothing, the contrast is just so great.

  16. I’ve been wondering if the dress on the ad was Backlund’s… been asking around but no one seems to know. I do hope the mystery gets solved at some point – they play the ad to death on tv and despite my best googling efforts, I still don’t have the answer! And it’s driving me mad! 🙂
