Stand by Tee

Feel awed by your intern?  I do – Kat George aka Style Lines sits besides me at Dazed and is giving me a hand on bits and bobs whilst feeding me information about all things cool and Melbourne (where she is from…).  One such Melbournian tidbit is Alpha60, a Melbourne-based label, who with the power of one single white tee they put on the runway in their last show brought back floods of memories.  In year 8, our form produced a stage version of Stand By Me as part of our annual Drama Festival where I was stage manager.  I could probably repeat every single line of that film given the number of times we had to watch it on the crappy school tv (which had no aerial connection).  I'm fairly proud of my little foray into stage management which I took FAR too seriously considering it was a crappy school production, and a tee with River Phoenix as Chris Chambers (held in high esteem by Alpha60 as they have him on their contact page as well..) reminds me of those times when I had nothing better to do than to give 200%.  A tee with all four of those Stand By Me kids would probably send me into a self-analytical quandry where I use self-help therapy tactics such as point blank refusing everything ("Do you want a cuppa tea?" "No I do not f****** want a cuppa tea!") and quietly rock myself to sleep whilst curled up in a tight ball on one side of the bed…

  1. I’m really impressed with some of the designers coming out of Melbourne. Almost impossible to shoot for editorial in mainstream fash mags tho because of the lack of overseas representation. (I know because I’ve tried!) LLGxx

  2. i love that movie, i watched it with my friend when i was about 13 in her attic and the dead body made us too scared to leave! i love the tshirt but feel, with say band tshirts too, that it’s like you have to be an expert on the subject before wearing something like that, i have nightmare thoughts of people accussing you of wearing for the sake of it which an old teacher used to do when girls wore rolling stones tshirts!

  3. NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Not here!!! This tee has become uniform of every indie wannabe on the East Coast (no idea about the West Coast) and sends me into a frothing rage every time I see it. I love print and think Alpha are designing some amazing pieces. It’s just, I can’t fathom how ‘uniform’ such ‘supposed individuality’ has become in Australia fashion.

  4. Imelda: Calm it! There’s a memory attached to this particular subject of the tee…it’s not so much the supposed ‘coolness’ of the tee given that I’m not that..erm…cool…

  5. susie, they do heaps of great pieces as well that you should check out. half my wardrobe is alpha60 and i wear their stuff on stage a lot too!
