Turn it Insiders Out

nomdss091.jpg

I don’t give New Zealand enough lovin’ and for that I apologise so as it is a rare occasion (I will try and make it less of a rarity…) I’ll go for a NZ oldie…. I’m sure all Kiwians know a fair bit about Nom*D.  They did make it over to LFW in 1999 and were supposed to show their S/S 08-9 collection in London back in September.  It didn’t happen but for a collection that is based on minute details and turning things inside out, I doubt a catwalk show would have done it justice anyway.

This "Insiders" collection turns to menswear as an inspiration but not in the usual way…. vintage men’s scarves get turned into a print on a dress.  Tuxedos and waistcoats are softened up as opposed to being replicated; they’re cropped and shorn and their zips are placed proudly on the outside.  Reversely, women’s petticoats are toughened up with tie dye and chopped up to make components of a dress.  Inspiration aside, the entire collection is ripe for layering over and over again which of course pleases me to know end and being an Antipodean S/S 08-9 collection, it’s actually available for sale on General Cucumber right now.  I see zips in all the right places, loose enough silhouettes for layering away and prints that are subdued enough to be mixed together.  I promise I will do more NZ investigation…

  1. Yay! I’m a Kiwi… good on you for promoting NZ fashion. Tanya Carlson, Karen Walker, Blanchett, Zambesi, so many good names!

  2. Black and white
    Polka dots with bite
    Make this collection outasite.
Worst rhyme ever but it makes me laugh and the collection makes me smile.

  3. I actually want the total look in pic 3 – I never go for the complete thing but I really like the many layers and construction of the garments all together would have NZ(d) it.

  4. Susie,
Chelsea Thorpe is one of New Zealand’s most exciting young designers – Her clothes are AWESOME! You should definitely check her out.
    xx

  5. I love NZ fashion and have been following it for a while, Zambesi being one of my favourites (love Nom*D as well, Karen Walker has done a 180 from when I first started buying her clothes, Nicholas Blanchet). I had not heard of the Insiders though, but thanks to you love it! Thanks for sharing that website, it’s great!
    xx

  6. Yaaaaaaaay!
I am a New Zealander and I practically drool over Nom*D clothes in stores every time I get the chance to go in and…oh just touch them.
THey are so beyond my budget, but I really do try and incorporate their look into what I wear a lot anyway. As they are fantastic!
If you are looking for other great NZ designers, try Kate Sylvester, Sera Lily and Zambesi (sister of Nom*D.
I’d try googling runwayreporter.nz. They have archives of a the last few NZ fashion weeks.

  7. That model is actually more striking than the clothes. It’s so rare I think that (or even notice) I thought I’d point it out.

  8. I didn’t know about this label. I come ‘all the way’ to you to find out a designer in NZ. Funny. I will have to see if I can buy it in Perth.

  9. I posted about this a few weeks back! love Nom*D, always have!
    glad you posted about it.
Us Australian and New Zealanders are a creative bunch 🙂

  10. Wow, those are all so beautiful. I’ve never heard of this label before, but I’m def. going to check them out now!

  11. YUS! Nomd is a cool label but te bit repeatable. there are cool cult designers from NZ fashion. Alexandra Owen is great and Jaeha is getting huge. They seem to enjoy dark inspiration! like you Bubble!! xx
