Pre Escape to the Moon

sarahmoon.jpg

Some readers may have noticed that I’ve been escaping every so often outside town to Maaargate Westgate-on-Sea (my boyfriend likes to insist he doesn’t come from horrid Margate…) for some time out at the weekends; to a state where I’m internet-less and mostly fashion-less.

I’ve put up some posts during the downtime weekend even though I always feel guilty when I’m not posting in proper real time, as though I’m posting falsely and not true to the real spontaneity of blogging.  Escaping is no easy thing alas and I’m beginning to wonder why I need to do it more and more often these days…

Anyhow, I’m digressing onto darker subject matter so time to take a few Calms pills… and take in some extraordinary beauty in the shape of Sarah Moon, my ultimate favourite photographer whose photos make me cry and wonder why I’m such a mediocre human being.

For some godforsaken reason, I missed BOTH Sarah Moon exhibitions that were on in London for the past few months but can console myself with a review copy of the Sarah Moon 1,2,3,4,5 book, a wonderful slate grey, matt paged, slipcased, five volume, hefty thing that I will definitely invest in as I can’t sadly keep this copy.

I therefore pre-escaped for a bit today and in my head, my favourite Chopin piece to play; Berceuse Op 57 in D flat major was whirring to the flick of the pages (a bitch to learn, but wonderfully therapeutic to play once you can master it…)..

  1. I love those photographs! They seem to capture an “essence of humanity” (I know how cheesy that sounds…) and individual lives and spirits and stories that the flashy shots that seem to make a photographer these days just don’t have…

  2. Hey Susie.. You blog so often, we won’t be mad at you if you escape! Look at me, I almost never finsih my posts the day I start writing them!
The piano piece is truly beautiful. In the video it was an interesting contrast to the rather quick flicking of the pages.
And you’re NOT a mediocre human. You’re unique. You’re great.

  3. Mediocre? Bah! You are fabulous, m’dear. I love the photos and the music seperately, but together, they’re amazing.

  4. you are such a great blogger and the t00nz in your playlist pretty much were a perfect accompaniment to this post hahah

  5. I love Sara Moon’s photography! We designed a facade of a bar last semester using her photos (for Architecture school), really enjoyed looking at her works.
    I love Chopin too!

  6. What incredibly amazing images by Sarah Moon! It’s easy to see why she’s your favourite photographer!
Hope you have fun on your ‘escape’, I leave in 2 hours for mine, which should be fun, and then 2 weeks time…Buenos Aires & Brasil!!! I am counting down the hours…

  7. Love Sarah Moon. Those books are just gorgeous! I wonder if there’s any chance someone will buy them for me for Christmas?!
    Enjoy your weekend away!

  8. Db major ouch! You are multitalented if you can play things like that as well as do all this fashion & writing stuff – are you lucky enough to fit a piano into a flat in London? That’s rare to have the space. One day I’ll learn…

  9. Thank you for this beautiful post. I used to play Chopin on the piano too, and finished with Fantasie Impromptu before I stopped playing at 18. Watching the video made me put on the Chopin, and makes me want to order the beautiful book too…

  10. the calming effect of chopin was somewhat ruined by the mad flick through
of the pages but oh well. Its hard to shove 5 volumes into a 5 minute vid.
i agree with you on this one. I reckon all Chopin pieces are a bitch to learn but they also one of the most rewarding afterwards..same with Brahms and debussy…
actually debussy is easier to learn than brahms. omg. i’m talking about
classical music..and this is a fashion blog. woops.
The books look amazing! And I love that there are 5 volumes.

  11. WOW I live in Westgate-on-sea … ! I work in a little charity shop in the town which is all right, the town is charming in an old mad people sort of way.
Currently trying to escape and get into a course at London College of Fashion.
I feel sort of starstruck … haha oh dear. By the way I know what your boyfriend means I wouldn’t like people to say I’m from Poohole Maaaargate either.

  12. Sarah Moon is one of my fave photographers too, sadly I missed this but the book is so expensive! Might have to invest when I get paid! x

  13. Brigadeiro: My escape is nothing like a trip to Brasil/Argentina…more like a self-imposed prison that is oddly satisfying…
Jay: Alas, I don’t have a piano in my flat but my parents don’t live too far away and my beloved Yamaha is there…
Adreamer: Yes, alas my slow-mo flicking was proving too slow for the HALFway-cutoff-track – the only one I could find on Limewire. Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Shostakovich killed me too…Debussy not so much…depends on which ones I guess…
Anna: I’ve never seen any charity shops! Hmm…I’m back now but I will definitely check it out when I’m back….

  14. I kept this website open while reading other sites, pushing the “play” button from time to time. I haven’t listened to/played Chopin for a longer time but this piece makes me wanting to start again..
