The Shrinking Jellyfish

When I wafted into the Moncler Gamma Rouge by Giambattista Valli presentation in Paris, my head had basically been battered silly by gale force winds and rain as I walked through this open stretch of road in front of Les Invalides.  So I was seeking a bit of sanctuary when I get to the Romanian Embassy where the presentation was being held.  Put an aquatic centre, complete with wafty chill down underwater music (does anybody know what I’m talking about here…?) in a beautifully ornate old embassy and jellyfish video projections across the walls and that basically calmed my head down a bit in about five seconds.  The jellyfish of course related to the collection itself – practically every piece was like a uniquely decorated wearably jellyfish what with the shoulders and sleeves being so perfectly rounded and puffed up.  It almost looked too over the top and indulgent of Valli to come up with quite possibly the prettiest activewear for a brand like Moncler which is afterall supposed to be keeping the bod warm on the piste.

So then when I glanced through the lookbook, I find that the puffs and curves have subsided a little and everything is less jellyfish-like which is neither a good nor a bad thing. It just adds another string to this collection’s bow and once again proves that Moncler Gamma Rouge can’t really be classified as activewear and rather just falls into being ornate outerwear.  This is a category that I’m all for seeing as buying coats/jackets tend to be so joyless and militant that I end up buying something frivolous just to negate all that sensible stuff.

  1. Oh my, Giambattista Valli & Moncler, what a collaboration!! I’m in love with all the pieces, they’re just unreal! And the ornate old embassy provides a stunning backdrop to showcase such works of art, amazing!

  2. puffy shoulders! i am all about the shoulders!
i have an old sweater of my mum’s that has puffy shoulders, quite similar to the second look in the lookbook (although it’s not quite as ornate!)

  3. The second one from the lookbook with with the tuxedo-ish pleats is just stunning. What I wouldnt give for it. Also, I love that the dress form are monogramed…I guess I’ve never noticed it at other displays.

  4. Jellyfish in the best possible way! I love all the jackets, but I wouldn’t wear them because exagerated shoulders don’t look good on me.

  5. when i saw the jelly fish look on the mannequin and your post I was like …..*pftttt* haha
but then looking at the models wearing the tops, I say it looks not bad, but If I had the chance I probably will not wear it, cause it will make my arm look humongous and fat haha

  6. all the tops are really cool… but what i’m really facinated by is the continual substitution of knickers for shorts… in a way, it’s quite shocking, maybe not on the runway, but if you saw someone actually wearing it on the streets.
i think i have to sit with this a bit more, because it’s certainly been coming up quite a bit.
