So my shoulders are hunched and my face looks exceedingly tired (don’t accuse me of self deprecation….see it for yourself ppl!) but over the last few days of Paris Fashion Week (I’m back now by the by….thank goodness…), I had become increasingly reflective and self-doubting about whether I fit into the fashion world, when I belonged or not. I was really encouraged and chuffed at the number of people coming up to me and saying they loved my blog but on the other hand, doing the whole fashion week took its toll and made me feel like that perhaps I loved fashion for the craft, the clothes and all the stuff that makes me dream as opposed to the merry-go-round of the ppl and the business and the nasty attitude that goes with it. Anyhow…this dress is illustrative of that as it’s by one of my fave grads to come out of CSM MA this year and I’m ECSTATIC that Mary Katrantzou has been picked up by Relative PR and has produced a S/S 09 collection for sale (she now has super fly stockists that I can’t reveal yet…). I will post the pics later but when she was talking to me about her collection, I got a bit emotional and was really inexplicably happy that she was enjoying success. I think if I go on dissecting what facets of fashion I enjoy, I’ll stop being a mope-about and just start getting on with it.
Yes, this was an extraordinarily cheesy post and yes, please do follow with comments of ‘Oh you look so crap!’… at least Mary K’s success will continue to cheer me up!
P.S. Thanks Tommy…. you have been a star for taking my photos and have provided me with light relief with your devoted love for Carine and Emmanuelle this week…
(Mary Katrantzou print dress, navy tights, Topshop sandals)

i love that dress! plus you look super cute in it.
=)
you look so cute and totally adorable! xo
I completely understand.
I’m from Melbourne and while the fashion scene in Australia is really exciting and innovative and fast paced- it’s also small and comfortable and there’s less social climbing and elitism going on.
I live in London now and London Fashion week came as quite a shock. I love fashion for all the same reasons as you- but I felt like I was amidst many people who were merely posturing.
My faith has been restored since I’m now interning at Let Them Eat Cake magazine. The girls here actually have knowledge and care about fashion culturally, as opposed to what it does for their social status.
xx
Glad you’re interning at LTEC Kat….met Cheryl very briefly at PFW….she’s lovely and I’m a huge fan of her mag….
Susie that dress is really really insanely cool.
As for the whole fashion thing, I’m still an outsider so I don’t get to see it in the same way that you do. I try not to think too much about the whole industry and what I want to do with my life because I get bummed out and try to figure out how I’m going to change my career. HA!
That dress is awesome! Hope you had a wonderful (although exhausting I’m sure) time x
i think you fit more than all those poor models who are told to bugger off after a few seasons.
can you elaborate the nasty attitude?
Every business has its nasty side. I always say that’s why they call it “work” and not “paradise.”
Not a fan I’m afraid…Sorry!
don’t be silly! you epitomize what fashion is about, expression, art, personality, experimentation and enjoyment. those who make you question whether you “fit in” with the fashion world are the types who are intimidated by anyone who shows a real knowledge of something they only have a bought entrance into. they might buy the ¬£1000 clothes and so think that gives them an elevated status but chances are they wear them exactly how they’re shot in the ad campaigns. you don’t, and that’s why you and not them have such a huge following.
The dress is gorgeous on you. I love how colourful/cartoony it is. I agree with Wendy B: work is work is work. Don’t believe the bull about how working on something you love will make you happy all the time. Nope. It still comes with its share of crap. Save the stuff you love for non-work, that’s my advice. Right, I’m off to drink more curmudgeon juice.
The dress makes you look a bit like Star Wars robot, whitch just a good thing out of my mouth.

I love seeing people who truly deserve it growing and becoming successful. And there is no doubt that this girl deserves it, I ADORE her designs, and I totally understand your gushiness about it. You’ve got it spot on, this is what’s truly wonderful about the fashion industry, watching and helping the truly talented ones succeed.
that dress is to-die-for, i love mary Katrantzou’s work
Sorry, I’m not going to give you what you want!
I think you look delightful AND delighted.
That dress is really cute.
I really love the print on that dress!
The dress is gorgeous. Love it with the Topshop sandals.
You must have lugged an awful lot of clothes to Paris?
The apparent bitchiness in fashion is rather intimidating but if you have a heart for it then go for it!
It’s always nice to meet new designers, discover them, and get to wear their clothes.
Love the slight contrast between the dress and the tights, it looks good together. Fabulous!!!
Oh no! 🙁 If even you, my style heroine, are doubting whether or not you belong to the fashion world then I have no hope! I just started taking my major classes for fashion merchandising too! Ahhhh! I am kind of terrified now — not going to lie, haha!
On the bright side, you do look very lovely. I have no idea what you’re griping about, dear.
Susie, been there done it got the t-shirt which is of no earthly use to you other than focus on what you want and ignore the rest, don’t get caught up in it. You’ll be fine! It’s knackering isn’t it!

Hey Susie,
I read your blog all the time and although I cant wear half the stuff you do Iappreciate your love of clothes, texture, colour, it’s exciting to see. Please don’t let anyones attitude question your sense of style!
I remember about a year ago you blogged about your insane passion for fashion and feeling annoyed when people moaned about it or complained when they were in the midst of the beast that is the industry. I was so amazed that you could have such a..pure love for all things fashion when I was fast beginning to hate it.
The point of this post is: don’t let anyone take away the love you have because your blog is one small thing that I actually enjoy within the industry (as my magazine pile gets smaller and my enthusiasm dies) Long live Style Bubble and your agenda-less musings. We all love them here!
Oh I remember seeing that collection (was it on here?)and the dress looks ADORABLE on you! Thanks for posting it!
I agree with the others. Work is work. I adore my job (PR for a Library system) but there are so many things that can get you down…
Her use of pattern and well tailored shape is brilliant.

i love the cool dress, and u look so cute.
I love that dress and your outfit is just divine! By now you must think I’m a rabid fangirl who will claim that I know you personally and all that jazz, but I really do love 99% of your outfits and you seem like such a lovely person! You are all the good things in fashion! Fashion should be all about joy and happiness and (to a certain extent) frivolity and fun!
Susie, you certainly belong in the fashion world, as you inspire so many people around the world, with your amazing self-espression, experimentalism, and knack for pulling off the most amazing outfits that we absolutely love!
You look really cute in that dress.
NICE DRESS!!!
and such is the way of the world…
but you look adorable, and that dress is pretty amazing!!
i think what you term “the merry-go-round of the ppl and the business and the nasty attitude” is inherently a part of fashion, just as much as the exquisitely crafted clothes and the creative genius of people such as Mary Katrantzou. i think a lot of people forget about all the inherent nastiness of the fashion business and we should all take care to remember that there are two sides of the coin.
i can understand what you mean about the nasty attitude. it certainly seems like there’s a perpetual practice of one-upmanship. on the other hand, i suppose every industry has its pros and cons and while we would all love to dream, the reality is very different. But if you do eventually fully dive into it, i’m sure you’ll be fine. 🙂 At least you get to meet designers whose work you love like in this case!
You are doing a great job, just make sure to provide the same quality work you are now known to do.
You look fine Susie, the shoulders are a bit weird but hey, hunch all you like if you feel like it, more real this way. The dress is really nice, I’d love to have one of those myself.
We all get disillusioned in our jobs at one point (hey, I work in IT…), it’s not limited to the fashion industry. As long as there is plenty of stuff you do love it’ll be worth it.
Susie, just love it. Love it like you don’t care. Scream all the way through the Lanvin collection, shout and stamp your feet at Margiela, even when no-one else is. Don’t deal with the bullshit. it’s about loving it. That’s what really matters. And I strongly believe if you love it, good things will happen, whether you play the game or not.
At least, that’s what keeps me going.
love,
Alex.
These are cool! Jean
I’ve worked in the Fashion Industry in NY for quite awhile. I think everyone gets into it originally because they love the art & craft of it, but it is really a tough industry, and takes incredible physical & mental stamina. I think a lot of people have a love-hate relationship with it. I have left a few times, but always get pulled back in. The trick is to find your own niche, that you can do w/o going completely crazy,
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this dress on you. You look fab! And you’re wearing flat shoes for a change 🙂
Loving all your posts about Mary Katrantzou – thanks for the introduction.
Seriously though, the exhaustion is something I can relate to, and the slightest hint of negativity is easily magnified.
Hang on to the fact that people recognised you and complimented you on your work – most of us wander around fashion week like faceless nobodies! xx
aahahh i love this dress! and the tights you’ve paired with it.
Wow really love the dress plus you look really good and COMFY in this outfit! Who says fashion has to be painful, eh?
LOVE IT!!
i like the dress but maybe you could wear with some mid heal shoes. i understand that you are being comfortable, but once i saw this photo, i thought of a turtle when he hide his neck under his shell! breath in, pull your back straight and give a bit of smile would make you look a lot better.
OH MY GOD I NEED ONE OF HER DRESSES. wow, i’ve just seen her collection and i’m blown away. you look amazing!!
I completely know what you mean about the ugly side of fashion. as a model and fashion lover i just had my first season and being completely immersed in the industry was so tiring and disenchanting. and seeing all the little strings being pulled behind the scenes was sort of fascinating, but i just want to see the beautiful final product and be blissfully unaware of all the dirty work. it made me realized that maybe i shouldn’t work in fashion, because it seemed that everyone i met who did work in fashion had grown to hate it.
i guess i’d rather be the little kid rapturously watching the puppet show than the bored puppeteer. haha.
btw, are you stylebubble on polyvore?
*Adore* the dress.
