Style.com’s 22 New York Fashion Week Preview was quite a nifty one. It gives me a foresight into a fashion week that is growing higher in my esteem… waves are being made out in New York and there’s a whole batch of ickle presentations that are quite intriguing. Seeing as I couldn’t make it out there and the invites to parties/shows flooding in just makes me really really frustrated/angry though I guess going out there with swollen eyes was never going to be a great look anyway so I’ve saved myself the embarrassment.
One teensy niggle though about the Style.com feature. Their tendancy to label every new designer ‘The next…’ e.g. Julian Louie is the NEXT Peter Som. It’s similar to music journalists who talk up new bands/artists by calling them ‘the next Bloc Party/Modest Mouse/Animal Collective…’ or worse, making equations/formulas with bands; ‘Bloc Party mixed with AC/DC and a dose of Kate Bush’ (yes I did realise how ridiculous that sounded…). My point is, why can’t the designer just be themselves… as opposed to ‘the next something…’?
Anyway, gripe over. I’m not overly excited about Peter Som so adding the comparison isn’t going to make Julian Louie better because I personally just like Julian Louie for being… Julian Louie, if that makes any sense. Something about his proportions/fit and his restrained use of embellishment and colour. There’s just a ‘flow’ to his silhouettes which is not to say they’re entirely devoid of ‘daring’ as the risks are taken in the lengths and the volumes…. with pieces being too short/puffy for some. That isn’t the case for me though so I’ll be looking forward to his ‘contoured and body-conscious’ looks for SS09.

You’re right. I don’t see Julian Louie as the next Peter Som. I mean I like Som’s designs but Louie has definitely something new to say in fashion.
Those photographs are outstanding! And it’s so true, new designers are never recognised on their own terms…they have to be there for a while until people start appreciating them for them. And I do love Julian Louie ๐
I want to be “the next” Wendy Brandes. Then after that I can be “the next, next” Wendy Brandes.
hello again, i wrote you days before to congratulate your fashion style, and now i would like to do it again because i was watching others fasion-blogs and i will not waste my time with them. so thank you for your fotos and ideas of combining our clothes. regards from mโยฐlaga, andalucโโ a, south of spain.
Although that report is inciteful, I found it utterly annoying. Don’t ask me why…maybe it is the ‘The Next Big…’bla bla. The names mentioned in it however are certainly ones I will be keeping my eyes peeled for over the next couple of weeks. Cx
mm…i noticed the same thing when i was reading it. it’s that whole ‘black is the new black’ mindset…
These pieces are gorgeous ๐ It should be an eventful week!
P.s. Check out my post on Japan Fashion Week

The ‘is the new’ is so ridiculous?! I totally agree with you there!
I would kill to go to LFW. I entered all of the competitions I could find online to win tickets, but just thinking about how many other people entered them..hah. You’re lucky to get invites y’know ๐
do you think if I e-mail them and provide coverage on my blog they will give me a ticket?
Hey Dina, just to say I do get invites etc to think because of my job… but you can but try…!
I have to say this is one of the few New York collections I can see being shown in Paris. Everything else in New York aside from the same select veterans is dull.
I agree about defining a designer’s aesthetic and designs by someone else’s – it just doesn’t seem fair to each!
I love the neck embellishment in the champagne dress. The silhouettes are really interesting too.
BTW, it annoys me when music journalists call new bands “the next…” I can’t never see the similarities (!)
Well said.
Who wants to be compared?
I love the clothes and the photography, very beautiful.
argh, i know what you mean, i’m totally frustrated i can’t go… invites, freelance gigs, invites…and for some reason i was hoping someone would fly me out there. ha!
oh well… there’s more to life than fashion week. and there is always ‘next time’
๐
beautiful photos, i’d like to him stick around.
don’t be angry/ frustrated. you’ll be there next year for sure ๐
I cannot agree more about making every artist into a derivative!
Those shoes are to die for.
these pieces are so amazing!!! ๐ I’m especially loving the 6th outfit!!!
thanks for the great post!
