London Fashion Week S/S 09 Day 1: The Lonesome Outfit

lfwss091.jpg

I hate it when I do ‘This is what I wore today’ posts because it sort of doesn’t really make that much sense as I never did them properly in a Style Bytes/Fops and Dandies- kinda way in the first place (non-continuity irks me real bad…).  Still, fashion week can be excepted because now that I’ve come back home, all I can murmur is ‘Peppermint tea please…’ let alone attempting any sort of full on descriptive typing. I promise something more substantial and texty, less shallow pictorials will be on its way…

For now, I present to you an outfit that guarantees rudeness in strangers.  Reactions didn’t vary much and they all went along the lines of ‘What the bloody hell is she wearing?’ or ‘What the fuck…’.  This wasn’t from fash crowd ppl – haven’t a clue what they thought.  At least they were probably more discreet even if they were thinking along the ‘WTF’ lines.  Still, Charles Anastase liked it.  Very blatant and loud comments of ‘What the fuck’ would normally make my eyes sting (yes, I’m a girl…) but I frankly didn’t care because I love this dress to bits and it is on my ‘To save in case of fire…’ list and I used to answer that fire question with ‘I’d save nothing…’.

Cage frilly-lingerie dress by Angie Montreal, American Apparel grey vest and leggings, Acne shoes, charity shop leather bag, vintage crochet gloves, oyster satin skirt worn as a top, Ann Demeulemeester jacket.

  1. Well, I think it looks adorable, and very creative, and anyone who made a rude remark is just ignorant. Are you going to the Christopher Kayne show? Love his designs!

  2. hi susie. i get a lot of wtf comments while walking on the streets sometimes too. it’s hard sometimes to have your own personal style. i’ve almost cried or almost gotten into a fight from hearing very very mean random comments from people on the streets before, but i’ve also smiled and made friends (and even given out business cards for custom garments!) from people who have come up to me to say they like what i’m wearing and where can they buy it?
you look fabulous as always, and that cage dress was made in a colour just right for you! stick our tongue out at the next mean comment. you look marvy. 😀

  3. ooh i’m sure all the important fashion people were noting you outfit for their future inspirations, i love the cage dress with the sandals and glvoes

  4. Anyone vocalizing on your choice of outfit doesn’t deserve to be at Fashion Week…because that’s what fashion is about…brave choices!

  5. best thing about london fashion week?
    seeing your outfits!
    ps. more shallow pictorials please!

  6. This is so great, Susie! I think all the best outfits get WTF comments – that’s how you know that you’re doing your own thing. Although they’re definitely quite annoying in public..

  7. Gosh your cage deserved all the attention at fashion week. I’m already planning my outfits for three days event, not going to bother wearing heels, just comfy flats. Hope it won’t rain on Fri cos I’ll be wearing my floor length 1970s vintage dress w/ kimono sleeves kekekekeke

  8. Good lord woman, speaking of eyes stinging I’m sitting here at my computer in total awe that of all your vast clothing supply you picked my cage dress to wear to LFW! You’ve simply made my day (month/year) and I think you look wonderful, so fuck all those closed minded stupid people, they were probably wearing sweatpants and living boring lives.

  9. I’m actually fairly conservative in dress..and I LOVE it. Your look fabulous! And I would definitely wear it!
Of course I would get wtf from my incredibly uptight husband… 😉

  10. this reminds me of that post you did on how you layer and how you don’t stop where normal people would and instead push it a tad further. =) i think it is very you — according to all the outfit posts i’ve seen. and it absolutely suits you. i probably would’ve stopped before putting that dress on — and that is what makes you stick out from the rest! =) the dress reminds me of a jellyfish. <3

  11. i like it. and love it. the only f-words you would have gotten from me would be… fantastical, frivolous, fun. sorry for the cheesy comment but i really do like when people can express themselves without being weirdly and verbally condemned by others.

  12. Ah, “wtf” comments are so amusing. I’m sure the fash people who actually know about dressing liked it. That cage dress is AMAZING, I just convinced myself I didn’t need one and here you are looking fabulous! Maybe I can construct one out of ribbons and staples. Hmmph.

  13. Perfection for London Fashion Week, I love it Susie.
You wear things that I see in my head but wouldn’t be brave enough, or inclined to wear and it is fantastic to watch.
And if Charles Anastase liked it thats a verdict right there! Do you know him? I’m so jealous, he is one of my favourite designers.

  14. I think this dress is amazing! Hopefully a cage dress will be one of my next purchases… anyway you look great so who cares what a couple of random wankers said.

  15. That’s funny. I actually saw you in the tube station today, and I thought to myself, that’s really not a crazy outfit because it’s well put together. Maybe if you had just thrown on the “cage dress” over any old thing…. But I thought it looked quite nice.

  16. i feel like that’s the type of thing i would admire from afar, and always wonder how to pull off…i love how you wear it though especially with the acne shoes!

  17. I started reading the post before i looked at the pictures and i was disappointed! This outfit is gorgeous and not ‘wtf’ inducing at all! It’s avante garde fashion, some people just don’t get it =D

  18. I love it! Let me share with you a trick Dottie taught me… if you’re wearing something you love but people don’t get, just chant ‘WHAT DO THEY KNOW ANYWAY?!’ in your head repeatedly.
    It works for me!

  19. you look fantastic!! and who cares what people say? let’em stare all they want if they don’t get it 😉

  20. I think it looks amazing. And I know exactly who it was that said WTF at your dress. Little Top Shop covered bitches in scarves and skinny jeans? Please. I’m so over that look. You look divine and I would be so upset if you looked anything less than unique. Oh and I’m so glad you like the necklace! Made my day to see you wearing it!

  21. i don’t know what people are thinking but you looked fantastic. the cage dress is gorrrgeous as i said before, and you teamed it well with the AA leggings, acne shoes and Ann D jacket (some of my favourite items from your closet!!).
though come to think of it, i do a quite a bit of ‘WTF’ comments in my head when i walk around in the city. e.g. seeing girls wearing leggings AS trousers. i really don’t understand that. and then there are people who would support US VP palin for example. sorry to venture off topic but it shows how many people out there are clueless about a lot of things.

  22. If you had described the outfit to me I probably would’ve been close to the ‘wtf’s’ … but honestly, I think you have pulled it off really fantastically! I think the shoes look great with it too.

  23. The cage dress looks great on you. I don’t think I’d be able to pull it off. Maybe the hostile reactions were prompted by the unexpected shorter hemline of the piece under the cage dress?

  24. it looks amazing. on some ppl it might look a little out-there but you own everything you wear and to tell the truth, this is definately one of my most favourite outfits you’ve ever out together! u look beautfiul!

  25. I’ve always admired your unique style and your courage to be totally your own person…so all I can say is well done, keep doing what you do so fabulously. PS I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the London collections.

  26. susie. you are amazing…
I have been following your blog for about a year now and this is my first time commenting…
thanks for all that you do. seriously. you’re not only a inspiration but your passion is felt by all.

  27. Love love love the outfit! Bet at least half those people were staring because they were jealous and wished they had the courage to wear something a bit different.
looking forward to seeing all your outfits for the week!

  28. definitely one of my favourite outfits of yours! and you look beautiful!

  29. yeah, agreed with tanya – more shallow pictorials please! ^^ as i read the post i was really wondering what that outfit of yours could look like if it makes people say such mean things! but i don’t think it’s WTF at all. it’s extravagant, yes, but that’s what we love about you!

  30. That is the precise reason I’m on the fence about “WIWT” posts. I hate to start and not keep it up. People can be mean, but you look fabulous so tell them to shove it!

  31. Hi SB… well, in a world where visual-overload ensures that we skim out most of what we see, even the “WTF”s mean that you have made the people look at you. And really, it’s what you love most that really matters at the end of the day. i think the outfit is very quirky and love you for wearing it, because you like it. you give me courage to be myself.

  32. you look great, I love this cage dress so much, I can see why it’s in you to “save in case of fire” list. Who cares about what anyone thinks, as long as your are happy thats what really matters. I’m looking forward to more outfit pics and backsatge gossip… hehe!!!

  33. Susie, you look great! I don’tunderstand why this outfit would dare such ire…you look very cute, I hope you’re really not bothered by stupid rude people.

  34. you look fantastic. i can see way mr. anastase gave you his approval.
love the outdoor shot btw. you’re make me miss london!

  35. Gah – wtf is wrong with people who feel so threatened by originality? You look fantastic (and you obviously feel that way too in these pix – another thing to get the teeth-gnashers going)- bravo!

  36. I will admit that occasionally I will think “Only Susie could wear that!” when you post outfits, but I think this outfit is not even your most avant garde! It is rather sweet, in a slightly twisted way, and makes me think of vintage things worn to tatters crossed with modernity.
    You look darling!

  37. Those people are idiots, much like the people who run the London fashion week website and made it ENTIRELY FLASH.
    Aaaarrrggghhhhh.

  38. The thing is, you can pull off things like this so well that its almost criminal!
    I LOVE IT
When I live in London I will be so much more experimental with my clothes, but for now I am a small-town teenager (sob) who has to make do with popping down every other weekend.
Hope the Topshop Unique show was fun, parts of what I’ve seen reminded me of your style

  39. Enjoy London Fashion Week!
The WTF is somehow a potent mix of audacity and charm. In the end, what matters is how good we feel in those WTF outfits we’ve put on…

  40. that dress is sooooo cute! anyone who says WTF is blatently either stupid or blind! im actually jealous of your dress. 🙁 i love it.

  41. Hi, Susie. I’m a young fashion designer from Spain. Is the first time that i leave you a comment but i read you since many months ago. 42. I honestly don’t understand how people could hate an outfit like that…I’d understand if the dress was both unusual and ugly, but I think it’s both unusual and remarkably pretty. You look amazing!

  43. I love it! I’m not as fashionably daring as you so I’d be afraid to put it on myself (living in a small college town in the U.S.,) but I think the thing I like best about it is the fact that as a cage, you can make it into so many different things just by what you put on underneath it. And for a girl with small closet space, multiple-outfits-in-one are a plus. 🙂

  44. You look absolutely adorable. Anyone who thought otherwise has no creativity. Was that first picture taken somewhere around South Kensington? It looks like it’s about three blocks away from where I lived in London!

  45. LOVE the outfit. Wish I could find a cage skirt/dress around here.
