Continues to baffle…

Well, the AW08-9 Prada effect has officially begun with this lace (printed/effected?) top (¬£22) and pencil skirt (¬£24) ensemble from New Look’s AW08-9 collection.  Of course Wong Kar Wai’s ‘In the Mood for Love’ ambiance is helping this immensely and takes away what will predictably be a ‘cheap’ looking shiny sheen of the dress as opposed to the ‘luxurious’ sort.

I’ve pondered about precisely two New Look dresses this summer and I’ve missed the boat with both of them.  It doesn’t help matters when you wonder into local New Look branches at Holborn and the Brunswick Centre and find an array of mangled floral dresses assaulting the brighty-tighty t-shirts on the dirty white tiled floors and then look over to the sales assistants who look like they REALLY don’t want to be there to deal with said assault…. if they don’t want to be there, do I really want to be there?

Despite all of that, I’m still pondering this navy slouchy jersey affair here that appears to be embroidered with a gradiating pattern of tiny rectangles that remind me of the brick game I play on my iPod when I’m bored to tears or the periodic table which I like to recite in my head when I’m again bored to tears.  I’m hoping they’re actually raised tiny satin rectangles individually sewn onto the dress which would give it an amazing textural effect… is that asking too much for ¬£45… me thinks so…

  1. The slouchy dress looks lovely but I’m always dubious about New Look clothes. They never seem to wash very well.

  4. I found a black and white lacy top the other at a charity shop, think I might post it later on. anyway I’m glad you noticed the not so happy, I dont want to be here look on most of the new look staff, I told someone about it when we went in one the other day, and I just sounded moany. Also I love In the mood for love, I watched it sometime ago but never got round to finishing it, and the lacy outfits Mrs. Chan wore were so lovely. I’m going to have to go and get it on DVD soon.

  5. Wong Kar Wai’s movies always have the most amazing wardrobe (I’ve just resurfaced from a 50th viewing of 2046). That second dress has potential, and you’re right it does look like Brick after you’ve struck a few pieces off the top. But still, a quality check might be a good idea.

  6. I love the slouchy dress. Hate the first lace/two piece horror. Cheap, cheap, cheap. There is a fine line with lace and these guys are miles over it

  7. if i bought anything from the store, i know i would see a million girls in fresher’s clubs in it! like the cheapie shoe range though

  8. Love the look of the slouchy dress, can never see anything in New Look that remotely resembles the photo though.

  9. Holy moly, I have no ideas the clothes are New Look until I read the post. They’ll probably never appear in my local branch though..

  10. Both of those look good to me. I’m not sure I care if the lace incarnations/knockoffs of the Prada look are cheap-looking or not.
I really like the blue dress. It would be a great look for you.
