The Many Strands of Nova Dando

People often accuse me of having an ‘editorial’ way of dressing.  I mean that in the negative sense of the word, the way Hadley Freeman defines it, in that it means ‘totally unwearable, bordering on ridiculous’.  So a collection created by a stylist by nature was certainly going to strike an impression on me.  Nova Dando is a jackquette of all trades, a knitwear specialist after graduating from CSM, an ex-PR girl, stylist for music videos and fashion shoots, DJ as part of DJ duo Lou and Nova and now has started making pieces for her shoots, vids and for stage outfits.

It is precisely this sort of background information that doesn’t make you go ‘Eh?’ when you see Nova Dando’s AW08-9 ‘Disco Collection’.  Every piece is made to order and is meant to give off major ‘WOWZA’ factor.  Except you’ll have supposed ‘editorial’ (said with great repugnance and a sneer) dressing me wanting to wear the twisted ribbon skirts, the silver disc bomber jacket, the knotted halterneck top made out of mesh tubing and the buttoned adorned corset without giving a thought to what the convetions of ‘wearability’ are supposed to dictate.  In the context of the lookbook, it might all be screaming ‘Boombox Clubkid’ (excuse the late club lingo because of course it’s now all about FashBash/Issue/Circus), which may not be a bad thing for some but I’m the sort of temperate person that would like to take those pieces out of the pictures and pounce them onto onlookers as a subtle surprise in an outfit.

Of course an LED-adorned hoop petticoat skirt and super spiked shoulder pads (as modelled here by Mandi Lennard) are just a leetle out of my range so I’ll leave them to the Ebony Bones and Roisin Murphys of the world to take them on.

  1. I’ll take “editorial” over conventional any day of the week.
Love #7. And the modern Marie Antionette one is interesting.

  2. Well, SB, consider yourself an insider, if people (multiple, I am taking it) accuse you of “editorial dressing.” D’ya know how ridiculous this sounds to the outside world, how irrelevant, and how small and narrow-minded it makes the utterer seem?
If I were you, I would most certainly pop on that completely outré top in picture #6, parade about London town, and really give ’em something to talk about.

  3. You’re totally right – these are exactly the sort of outfits Roisin would wear! (And I hope she does!)

  4. That’s what’s so wonderful about the way you dress. I love to see the looks you put together and rock!

  5. Editorial dressing is the best kind – it’s like living inside of a fashion magazine! Regular dressing is like living inside of Seventeen.

  6. I am not an “editorial” (in a good way read: adventurous not in snooty tone) dresser but some of those pieces appeal to me. I would like some of those as a sort of statement piece like the skirt/dress from look 7.

  7. well, if anybody should buy this,
it should be you as you would most definately pull it off.
    i especially liked 7, 16 and 1.

  8. I always see you as someone who can pull off the impossible, whatever label people want to throw on it! Especially love those tassely pants in the designs..

  9. these are amazingg
i especially love those ribbony pants and that hoop-skirt thing..ooh and that dress on the bottom left
this might sound strange, but id wear them if i ever got a chance!!-maybe not out in the streets, but just for fun, as art more than fashion

  10. those clothes are fabulous, the funny thing is ive been fantasizing about a hoops skirt for ages and now one pops up here! if i could track on down, locate enough money to buy it, and figure out how to walk around in it i would totally wear one around (and just pretend like i dont notice people are looking at me funny)

  11. Love that hoop pinafore/skirt(?). Editorial my arse. Fashion is fun and fantasy. Some people like to dress up, what’s wrong with that? Naysayers are usually the ones who never have the balls, the style or the imagination. Thank god for the Monalisas and Madhatters of the world.

  12. I dont think you’re ridiculous at all, I think you’re fabulous. Francis x
ps if you have time could you check out my blog, im new at this and was hoping for your opinion. 🙂

  13. gosh, i wish you would stop giving naysayers any amount of attention. where would we be for it not for people willing to step out of the navy blue box?
as far as this collection… it’s beautiful.
    🙂
