Peter Pan is Out-y

So I rarely ever condemn things as ‘fashion don’ts (the phrase itself perplexes my minute brain….), but unfortunately, after a terrifying night of seeing The Orphanage (El Orfanato), directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, produced by Guillermo del Toro (of Pan’s Labryinth fame… a must-see!), I’m going to have to ban grey/chambray smock dresses with peter pan collars.  Without giving anything away, the film involves dolls, creepy bespecled old ladies, dead children and an orphanage uniform that could have been viewed as cute at first but by the end gives you jitters.  It was quite corny/amusing how the whole audience I was watching it with jumped/shrieked at all the right moments and that hasn’t happened to me in a while.

Actually, just any dress even nudging towards that smocky peter pan collared direction like these ones from eBay are off the wardrobe palette too.  I’ll be sad to see that Charles Anastase/Erin Featherston element go out of the wardrobe but alas, El Orfanato has now been imprinted on the brain… fans of the Peter Pan collared dress beware…

  1. that’s very true, just after seeing the film i saw a similar style dress in a charity shop and shrieked in the streets…

  2. is that movie only in spanish? too bad if it is because i can’t speak a word of it and it looks really good!

  3. hehe, another point I can add to my list of reasons I don’t like scary movies. 🙂
I can’t imagine having nightmares when seeing cute outfits, such a shame!

  4. really not a big fan of horror movies, especially when they plant these vivid images in your mind…
that said, I suppose the striking impression it has on the audience will be superb for remembering looks. While that movie “The Village” some time back wasn’t all that horrid, I can never forget the 1900s dressing of the cast… eeps!

  5. haha this made me lol a bit! I think Erin Fetherston’s OD on smocks spurned a natural progression of ‘meh’dom on the public part- or maybe tis just me…i don’t think i can stomach Lula anymore 😮

  6. Ohh creepy but I have a penchant for peter pan colars.
I’ve put up my first outfit post on my blog..it would be cool if you stopped by.

  7. Hi Susie
Huge fan of the blog, this is a bit random but I am going to Paris, do u know any good places to go there? In fact if anyone has any idea where is good to go in Paris, could u comment the blog or something?
    Thanks

  8. I love peter pan collars so I’ll have to give this movie a miss. In any case the music in Pan’s Labyrinth absolutely did my head in. And that thing they kept under the bad…euwww!
Charlie, if you like punky rocky indie stuff then April 77 has just opened a shop in Paris. I think I blogged about it a couple of weeks ago.

  9. you’re right! Peter Pan collar dresses also remind me of the ones Mia Farrow wears in Rosemary’s Baby. Creepy cute. 😉

  10. i laughed out loud when reading this post. i don’t find your trauma funny but the situation is quite similar to what i’ve experienced after watching any kind of horror movie and i tend to pick up something that freaks me out. but never a peter pan collared dress before though lol

  11. peter-pan collars have been on my mind for a while actually, but i’ve never been fond of the erin f. because in my opinion, she almost ruined them for me. when you take something originally cute and quirky, and you create horrid satin confections out of them…its unforgivable (im talking about a particular Target dress).
I love horror movies, ill have to see this when it comes out, even if those uniforms will haunt me somewhat- heh.

  12. I am a big fan of del Toro. And in fact, have been looking forward to The Orphanage. About the wardrobe… I share your horror 🙂
Btw, read your interview on Indie fashion bloggers. It was great to share your insights and views. I love your blog.

  13. i agree- peter pan collars are too costume-y….i have a shirt with one and always feel like a ’50’s school girl.
as for the movie- so scary i actually spontaneously cried in the theatre! highly recommended!!
