I kid you not when I say that on the ONE day that I was at London Fashion Week, I spotted no less than three people wearing ribbondry of some sort in their hair and on the same day on Oxford Street, of all the generic places, RED satin ribbons in the hair tied into a neat bow were seen on two individual girls. Diehard Kristen Dunst fans or Miu Miu addicts? I haven’t a clue, but they worked the ribbons in different ways so it could be that the Miu Miu SS08 ad hasn’t a jot to do with their ribboned head. In general, I’m noticing a bigger inclination towards head decoration that just wasn’t about a few months ago when everyone was in beanies and berets.
I can’t even attribute it to Blair Waldorf (Gossip ‘X-O-X-O’ Girl)’s addiction to her prim/girly bit of headgear. seeing as the show hasn’t started to air yet in the UK, though a small percentage including myself has been guiltily watching it on the internet (the hammy acting and the hilarious ‘I’m-evil’ looks from Blair and Chuck are both joys to watch…), Ms. Waldorf favours Jennifer Ouellette, who supplied me with my pheasant feathered headband, so their various arrays of mid-priced headbands are a good option.
My own obsession with adorning the hair tends to be less neat/cute and more Natasha Khan from Bat for Lashes/Rambo. If only I had Miss Couturable’s array of pretty/chic hairbands to get the barnet under control and also trick people into thinking that I was some sort of a high-achiever in school (which Miss C certainly is!). Interesting how I don’t really use my hairbands to necessarily neaten up the coiff. If anything, I end up creating a mushroom poofy static effect, especially after a night out prancing around in a sweaty club.
I wonder if VV Rouleaux has been seeing an increase in sales in correlation with my witnessing a lot more ribbondry on the head. Anyhow, this has all been a mixture of random musings on ribbons creeping onto people’s heads. This would have had more point to it had I been able to give advice on head decoration…. advice being of course something I’m crap at so you’ll just have to stick to the random musings.

your headbands are great! and i don’t use those things to straighten/tidy the hair either! i thought Miu Miu SS08 was a bit over the top. when i looked at the pictures, i felt like i was in a circus
What about Alexis Mabille’s adorable bow ties!!!! I love, love, love them!!!! 🙂
xox Girl and the City (in Paris)

I like headbands a lot (love to see Blair with ribbons, laces, alice hairbands) but in my case I dont wear big headbands or big ribbons because I have a thin face/head. I prefer small headgear.
I think Tarina Tarantino and Accessorize have cute headbands and accessories!
Btw, I like Miu Miu’s Campaign!
I might be surreptitiously watching gossip girl alongside catching up on the blog roll… Selina from Flying Saucer has been playing with ribbons too http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/2245332/26374092 if nothing else it gives me an excuse to hang around haberdasheries some more…
Funnily enough I hve just received my bow tie headband from Tatty Devine in the post today. I wanted the red one but got the black in the end. I’ll be taking a piccie and doing a post on this some stage but, whilst following the trend for ribbons, its nice that it is slightly harder in look and also feel – the bow being perspex!
Awww you are much too nice to me…I’m not doing so hot in school thanks to the flu and I definitely don’t feel like an overachiever at all :[. You’re really way too nice haha.
You have really interesting headbands…I wish I could wear something like that! I’m so bad with hair so sticking a headband in my hair creates the illusion that I look put together.
I giggled at the “Rambo” description, I never thought about it before! Really like the layering of headbands, must try meself..
I am shamelessly addicted to Gossip Girl. Can’t wait for new episodes to air!
As for hairbands, I kind of like the huge bow ones, but they’re not for me at all. I’d look absolutely ridiculous.
I can’t wait for it to premier over here. Why does it take so long?!
I love hairbands, been wearing them all the time.
You know you love me!
I’m liking the word “ribbondry.”
i really love hair adornment, but ribbons always fall off, i guess i have a very slippery head.
oh how i WISH i had a fringe so i could wear those headbands, i find they cannot reach their ultimate fabbyness with a side parting and a centre parting looks too hippy. yours are so FAB with your shiny, shiny hair!
p.s. gossip girl has been on itv2 for a few weeks, i got my sister hooked!
Love headbands, lovelovelove them. They’re completely decorative on me (no need to hold hair out of my face, as it’s not long enough), but that’s not stopping me from buying them up and wearing them. I’ve got one with an enormous red bow and I’m planning on making some feathered and rhinestoned ones (bought some beautiful pins when out thrifting/antiqueing yesterday).
Bat for Lashes x Rambo = awesome AND a great idea for a Japanese clothing line.
I love hairbands and own quite a few too! I’m another gossip girl fan and am waiting patiently for new episodes to appear online again…
I’m totally addicted to Gossip Girl as well – but I had to tell you that the “I’m evil” looks make me laugh too!
I adore head accessories–the battier/more whimsical the better. McQueen is one my my inspirations for that. I quite covet all of yours…
I used to be totally anti-head accessories. But lately, I’ve been obsessed with Gossip Girl and playing with headbands and I’m slowly falling in love. Now if only I can find slightly more exciting ones for a decent prize…all of yours are ultra lovely, of course, but I’m guessing it’ll be pretty unlikely for me to find anything remotely resembling them.
I love headbands, but they give me headaches!!!
susie you’ll have to check my blog in a few days. we’re having a headware day at work tomorrow where everyone is going to come in wearing various head adornments.
i’m keeping it uncharacteristically simple with one of those AA headbands as you’ve shown above – though i’ve invented a new way of wearing it – but there are bound to be some more interesting attempts.
i loved this post by the way. made me laugh a lot. especially the bit about the mushroom. i can relate.

it’s you!!
These pictures are amazing, there’s really a vintage feel to it. Cool!
i’ve noticed that miquela from hollyoaks has been rocking this look for a while aswell. WHAT gossip girl has aired already?! why does grazia still tease me with little snippets then? dammit!
You’re so right! Here’s mention of someone else who’s found a new hairband obsession through Gossip Girl Blair: http://www.catwalkqueen.tv/2008/02/what_is_a_fashi.html
P.S. You’re mentioned on that post too, Susie!
I am proud to say that I am a huge Gossip Girl fan. I love the OTT story lines as well as the wardrobes. Are they not the best dressed school kids ever.
I love ribbons too, but I’ve been finding it hard to keep them on my head – They keep sliding of!
Oh, and I find the word ribbondry extraordinary lovely 🙂
I tried the sparkly version on my own head in December, and it worked- I didn’t try to tidy my hair either! I think a lot depends on finding a strip of cloth etc that is the right width…though twisting a scarf up into something turban-like isn’t a bad thing to do either.
Gossip Girl’s done airing here. I must say, I think Skins was/is better, stylewise and otherwise (I watched the latter via lots of guilty Youtubing too- I love Cassie!)
two of my favourite things – headbands and leighton meester. I love headbands but they seem to make my head look strangely misshapen…maybe it’s time to give it another go
You adapt trends so well; I admire that.
Gossip Girl. Love it. True guilty pleasure tv.
Wait till you see the wardrobe on Anna Friel in ‘Pushing Daisies’.. great ’50s inspired dresses.
As for headbands… you’ve got a great collection!
I buy them but never end up wearing them as my head looks like a football. Oh well.. I try.
My winter obsession with headbands gave birth to two nicknames, “Rambo” and “Mushroom head” (when my hair starts poofing up out the top of the headband)
The price for fashion 🙂
Well i have very huge collection of headbands at home and i wear them almost all the time !!! 🙂
