Childish Brights

rainbow.jpg

As I was trekking it back home on the tube, I could have looked at the hipster-esque indie girl wearing a gingham dress with DM boots.  I could have been inspired by the velvet suit that a skinny guy was wearing (I wanted to feed him sandwiches).  Instead, I turned to the person who was making the loudest noise and despite that, she wasn’t pissing me off.  It was a 4 year old child who had on the MOST number of colours I had ever seen worn at once in separates.  Something along the lines of a bright green hoody with a red and black rainjacket worn over it, turquoise corduroy trousers, lilac socks and pink T-bar shoes.  Now I’m pretty sure her parents, who looked like they were touristing around London weren’t making a conscious effort to dress their child up in a plethora of colours but rather just threw on what was about.  That’s all very well but I couldn’t help but remark that if an adult was donned in that many colour clashing separates, they would get more than a few eyebrow raises.  I’ll admit that there is a bit of an art/skill to colour co-ordination but increasingly, it’s all just a little irrelevant depending on what exactly it is you’re colour matching.  Indeed, why not try and wear all colours of the rainbow at one time.  If a child is not going to be laughed at for it, why should adults?  I ask that question with all seriousness because there is no logic to it other than supposed conventions of growing up and plain mean ‘poke-fun-at-fashion’ bitchiness.

Just for listing colours sake…. Vintage red knitted beret, vintage purple plasticky shirt, vintage blue high necked halterneck dress, vintage violet satin embroidered vest, PVC pink skirt, vintage yellow satin ruffle skirt, Azona forest green wrap skirt, vintage green and tan belt, teal blue tights, vintage white multi-strap shoes…

  1. Not so sure about the bright colours, mind you my girlfriend and her friends really seem to be embracing them

  2. Heee, thanks for visiting my blog!!
Oh dear, I LOVE this outfit!!! It makes me happy, really. I used to wear super bright colors when I was a freshman, and the seniors used to call me “carnival girl”. Hah!

  3. I actually quite like your outfit! I think the white shoes are the most standout bit, because you’ve mixed your brights with darked jewel tones so the white is more jarring than any of the colors. If you grounded this with dark shoes, I think it is cheerfully wearable.

  4. you have such a talent for layering! goodness, it doesn’t even look like you ‘shouldn’t be wearing that many colors’ because they all seem to match in the perfect un-matchy way….it’s like the perfect storm of outfits.

  5. i love finding inspiration in unexpected places! you can totally pull off the rainbow of colors. reminds me of the 80s cartoon character rainbow brite!
    xoxo

  6. that is brilliant, it kind of reminds me of carnaby street in the 60s… excellent!
also.. i might add, i’m so envious about that vinyl pink skirt.

  7. Style Bubble is my home page, I always enjoy it and this just got an early morning emphatic “Yes”!!! from me.
your darling inner child just got a little taste of sophistication.

  8. ooo the satins make it look so rich and the absense of fluro green take away the rainbow-fruits-rocker type vibe a rainbow outfit could have had, it all works so well! also, your pink pvc skirt has no end of combinations, what a find!

  9. I actually love that outfit!
I was wondering if you would like to exchange links? my blog is only new so if you don’t want to its ok!

  10. See, this is what I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. Whenever I go out, I see so many blacks, whites, greys…etc. I feel the need to go crazy with my colours to bring back a bit of sunshine!
I still need to acquire enough clothes to actually go as far as you though. For now though, I’m happy combining my turquoise tights with my red shoes 🙂

  11. As Annah put it, there’s too much grey and black in the world. Why not dress to make people happy and to make yourself happy?

  12. you’re outfit definitely cheers me up on a rather dull day! I love the colours and how bright it is.

  13. I wish I had what it takes to pull something like that off, you’ve done it amazingly well.
Would you mind if I added your link to my blog?

  14. ode to lifesavers !
i love how children can dress with no fear, yet still look stylish!
    xoxo from australia !

  16. Thanks so much for commenting on my blog! You have no idea how excited I was, especially since I’ve always been a gigantic fan of yours and you’re practically a celebrity in the blog world.. Haha sorry if that sounds scarily fangirl-ish – but anyway, love the outfit! I’d like to try that clashing for myself..

  17. i think adults wear less colours and are less bright than kids cause theyre clothes are larger and some kids colour and print combos are harder to pull off on a large area ?

  18. I love this outfit, looks great on you – again I think it is great to see some bright colours on a drab and dreary winter day. Not sure if there are many who could carry this look off though!

  19. Uhh, I’m loving it although I could never pull it off! Especially during the winter time it would be lovely to see more colors out there.

  20. Hey everyone… thank you so much for the comments! It seems lots of you want to see colour in your winter… strange that in London, it was probably the most colourful of winters in recent years…. lots of jewel tones everywhere!
Bojana: I’d take Carnival Girl as a compliment!
Ninja: Of course not… I’ve linked to you…
Jen: Link removed…put you in a different category as I’ve just reorganised my links
Style Eyes: That is a good point… but breaking up a larger area can also be achieved I think with layering…. which I’m sickeningly obsessed with.
No need to thank me about commenting on blogs…it’s a 2008 resolution of mine as I’m finding it so fascinating reading all the new blogs popping up.

  21. Love the satiny brights…I have a rainbow-striped sweater (screaming loud it was, I got quite a few raised eyebrows for it)I loved to wear in the winter, but it’s nothing on this.

  22. i suppose adults are laughed at for clashing colours because we’re supposed to know better . as a kid you’re allowed to make “mistakes” just like colouring outside the lines.
but i do wonder who decided that wearing many colours would be wrong? maybe they just wanted to blend in with the crowd? 🙂

  23. my god, your entire outfit is pulled together by those amazing shoes. i think you deserve some kind of award.
