The Print Reminder

There will be another LFW loss for next season and as I was browsing through the Fashion East sample sale yesterday, it struck me that the cluster of labels that were hanging on the rails were like a nucleus London fashion collective, each designer contributing completely different things to the scene but it seems right to say all their names in succession and in tandem with each other.  Jonathan Saunders will however be taken out of this nucleus as he will be showing in New York come February.

For the past two seasons, he has played with shape and structure more so than when he first started and was purely known for his printwork.  I thought it would be nice to buy a little bit of signature Saunders print in the form of this dress from the SS06 collection at the sale to perhaps give a litle bit of a reminder of what attracted me to Saunders’ work in the first place; the colour compositions, the perfect judgement of timing and structure in pattern.

Without wanting to give people a too much of a headache as they follow the coloured lines of the dress, a sheer tunic will tone it down a bit…(victim alert, as I am indeed falling for all things sheer next season…. abeit layered of course with zero flesh showing through….!)

  1. cool dress… the model in the very first picture has a face like a man (but maybe I get that impression because of the hair)! I like your dress better than the model’s dress, though.

  2. I like it less with the sheer tunic. I think its the way the two shapes sit together, or maybe the pockets on the front. I don’t know.
I really like the first outfit with the tshirt though. Your figure looks amazing.

  3. Saunders is just an amazing talent. He’ll be sorely missed from London Fashion Week. Have you checked out James Francis Miller though? Now there’s a bright new star.

  4. Susie, were you at afterskool last night? im sure i saw you! i think you had a black and gold outfit?! you looked lovely anyways x

  5. I adore the dress with the grey tshirt underneath!! So wonderful!
I’m more of solid girl than a sheer one…
something to do with the fact that I wear a hijab and thus probably layer up so much…that you may feel that I could rival you in the layering…
I really love the flats, the colour is great! Where oh where did you get them from?

  6. Went today and almost bought a Saunders scarf for similar sentiments. But a Markus Lupfer huge black cashmere dress did it, especially as I shared it’s name.
I love fashioneast for its nucleus-ness but having them all in the same place means it’s much harder not to bankrupt myself!

  7. Wow i love the dress without the sheer thing! it’s so amazing i think it needs to be worn by itself.
I’m quite fond of sheer things, but mostly white. I had this great nymph outfit at one point, with layers of various white sheer fabrics. pwetty!

  8. oh my gawd i love it! perhaps the best striped dress i have seen in a looong time!
and i agree, the sheer overlay really gives the dress that something more.

  9. Oh that dress is gorgeous, i love how body hugging it is. I think the sheer works and transforms it nicely.

  10. Like some of the others I prefer it less with the sheer thing. It’s such a great shape and print, I prefer just to let it shine but then again, thats my personal style. What about layering something sheer underneath? Either way, i love the way it hugs your figure! sexy susie!

  11. I love this. The colors make me kind of think of Missoni. And underneath the tunic it has a sophistication that I wouldn’t have guessed at seeing it on it’s own. Nice choice.

  12. MMMmmmm it looks great by itself, but I do do do so much love it with the overlay.
I almost bought one similar recently that was GOLD, like gold gold, but it was far too big. I was sooo tempted anyway

  13. Yay – lots of J Saunders lovers! Thanks for the dress love… it was a bit of a steal…couldn’t resist really…
I think I still want to wear something sheer over it…maybe a different sheer garment but I’m working on accumulating more sheer…this one is a tunic from Topshop.
modaRhoda: I haven’t heard of James Francis Miller – just did a Google search and yielded nothing…. must investigate more!
5avenuemarceau: I was tempted by the VERY cheap (well in comparison…) Marios Schwab…. ¬£250 for a dress that usually costs ¬£800! But alas…I don’t have the bod for it…
Rosie: Yes I was…please excuse my debauched dancing…! I looked like a wreck but thanks anyway!
Zainab: The flats are some cheap things I picked up in Hong Kong…. the colour is great but the fit alas is not… so I don’t wear them that often.
    Meg: Sexy figure? Moi? Ahem….
Lucy-Jane: Gold sheer? Hmm… do tell where you saw it.

  14. oh, be brave, and wear it without the tunic. that pattern is so fantastic, and it doesn’t hurt my eyes a bit.

  15. Hey Susie, well actually it was at a secondhand store down in NewZealand called Savemart…so no luck!
But it was amazing and now I have my eyes out for one that will actually fit me, i think I might have to make one
