Bad Film, Good Costumes…

Am I too old for Halloween?  Probably.  But since I never got into it as a youngster (bar the one time I dressed up and went trick or treating as a Scottish dead bagpipe player ghost called Alistair McNab…. yes, I was an odd child…) and the UK has only in recent years made a bigger deal out of Halloween, I might as well start thinking about it now what with the inevitable slew of ‘Let’s-throw-a-party-for-the-sake-of-this-holiday’ parties.  I’m waiting for my copy of Liquid Sky, the 1983 low-budget cult film directed by Slava Tsukerman to arrive since I missed it when it showed as part of the Fashion in Film programme.  Supposedly it’s one of those ‘SO bad it’s good’ type films, so I’m hoping it will give me a few chuckles when aliens arrive in a literal saucer to feed off the Earth’s supply of heroin only to find that sex is better and so they feed off victims and then *blip* them off the screen…literally and you hear lines like ‘You are an ugly chicken’ said with 100% seriousness.

Moving away from that cheesy goodness though (it’s pure Cheddar I’m told…), Marina Levikova’s costumes for the film goes beyond the expectations of such a low-budget movie.  I’m only judging by these stills but they’re like a combination of the cliched elements of 80’s fashion, Ziggy Stardust and Kandinsky paintings.  The angular jutty outty pieces, ombre shadings and sensitive colour clashes are all primed for Halloween outfit replication.  In particular, the dark blue dress with the exaggerated shoulders and hot pink gloves gives me ideas of what to do with the milinery material I picked up in Vanves.  It’s not going to be a particularly creepy or recognisable but I suppose I could just keep on recalling the film’s shockingly absurd storyline if people ask.

  1. Hi Susie,
Seems like the 80’s is doing a tsunami like comeback–music, movies, fashion etc. Not that I am compalining as I really like the carefree and colorful era that was.Is there any explanation why? Is it a conspiracy theory of designers, musicians etc? Or people nowadays are just less imaginative to experiment and formulate new things?
    Besos!

  2. Miss J.: Well the 80’s likes to rear its head every so often. I think the early 90’s is making the bigger comeback at the moment… either way, these things perhaps never go in or out but just remain in people’s style consciousness…
Rollergirl: I have no idea about that osoyou.com thing…. I was sort of thrusted onto that without fully exploring it…must go have a closer look…
Polyvore I know more of as I’ve seen the cute images that ppl have been posting of the outfits that they have made…. quite a cool concept and ppl seem to be really receptive to it.
It’s hard to keep track of all these web shenanigans….
Miis Woo: I got it off an Amazon Marketplace seller. Just type it into Amazon.co.uk and click Buy New & Used copies. I don’t even care if the DVD is region 1 as I have a multi-region player…
