Lula gets K Dunst-ified

When I happed upon Lula over a year ago, I thought the girls it would appeal to would be few and far between – dreamy, whimsical, doll-like, someone with fleeting thoughts and falls in love with particular fashion hard and fast.  Hence why I instantly fell in love with it.  Not because I completely fit into that audience but because I respect it for having that tunnel vision and producing something for the love of it.  The point is not to be ‘on-trend’ or ‘of the moment’ but to provide a particular kind of haven to escape to (incidentally, I devoured my first issue of Lula in a cosy tea room (as well as a scone or two!) in Kensington whilst it was raining…. perfect time to escape….).

For it’s latest 5th issue, they have invited a Lula ‘dreamgirl’ to guest edit the issue; the dreamgirl being Kirsten Dunst.  If any actress is to be handed the reins of guest-editing a magazine, I’m glad it’s K Dunst, judging from this issue of Lula’s content.  Christian Lacroix, Sonia Rykiel and Acne are the designers featured.  Jason Schwartzman and Au Revoir Simone get interviewed.  I would advise all fans of Miss Dunst to hop-foot to a Borders and get a copy pronto for all things that Miss Dunst admires and of course editorials featuring Dunst herself.  For those who don’t fawn over Kirsten but is a fan of Lula’s staunch prettiness, it still has all those qualities and more.

  1. ooh – i’m a fan of lula too, and tho i’ve disliked kirsten dunst a little ever since she became a little annoying in spiderman, i think those pics look quite interesting… there goes another few quid! ;-D

  2. the silly lady in borders left me waiting while she “went and asked the manager” if they had lula (after doing that annoying thing where they look on the shelves for you when you’ve quite obviously already done that) for about half an hour before coming back and leaving me disappointed, so i still haven’t had the pleasure of reading it. i really hope i have better luck with this issue! it looks like such a lovely magazine.

  3. I always think that saying you like Kirsten Dunst is like saying you like “music”. . . but I guess she’s just been my girl crush for so long. I’ll have to pick up Lula next time I’m in the city.

  4. Lula is my one and only; it can do no wrong. I just moved to a new city, and it just occurred to be that I might not be able to get it here. No!!

  5. Oh you lucky one! Got a copy so fast…I agree with you, it’s not often you find a magazine that sticks exactly to its guns, and produces content so consistent with the style and tastes of its editor. That these style and tastes are also consistent with mine is a bonus! I adore Kirsten and Au Revoir Simone so I can’t wait to grab a copy. Thanks for the preview tho!

  6. I don’t think liking kirsten dunst is sticking to your guns. For a magazine that seems to be averse to advertising i would say this is quite a commercial move. I don’t get why girls fawn over her like she’s some indie girl and has some sort of passion for fashion because she did that vignette for erin fetherston and was in marie antoinette. I don’t know. I guess I just don’t get it. To me she’s as commercial as can be.

  7. She is commercial but the fact that she can step back and still do indie projects here and there means something. Virgin Suicides anyone? Cat’s Meow? She picks her scripts well. And while her style may not be everyone’s cup of tea. . . she always sticks out and does her own thing and that’s to be admired.

  8. I just looked at my friend’s copy of the new issue. It’s so beautiful! But I have some mixed feelings about some of the spreads. How are people feeling about the Keira Knightley spread? Or the Sasha Sagan one? I’m not crazy about those.

  9. I think they can never do something wrong if they stick to this idea and theme, however, it might tend to be boring at time.

  10. i really wish we got that magazine in the us…
ive been obsessed with it ever since the first issue.
you dont think maybe you could pick one up for me & we could do the whole paypal thing, do you?
are you even still doing that? :/
oh & let me say i am in love with your blog. & ive linked you.
    kisses xx a.

  11. i may try to get to a borders based on the pictures! did you see the little ‘never-ending story’ film picture on her collage page – now theres a film you can take fashion inspiration from! x

  12. Oh wow. That coat. The mint coloured one. Can someone please tell me who made that beautiful coat? 😮

  13. I alway loved Lula since the first Lolita-styled issue; they have that whimsical quality to it, but goodness, they cost 24USD at Borders, but so worth it.

  14. on a magazine note I just thought I”d say congrats on getting into this months i-D you deserve it!

  15. I really wish I had this issue in hand. Kirsten Dunst has been one of my girl crushes since Bring It On, and I adore the fact that her style sense is her own. And she’s a good ‘fit’ for Lula, much more than most celebs I can think of.

  16. Lula is my favorite mag of all time. One of my good friends and I actually started our friendship mostly based on a shared love of the magazine. Its hard to find in Canada though. Every magazine store tries to hand me a copy of LouLou (canadian equivalent of Lucky).

  17. aw, i wish i could get my filthy paws on this issue! is it just me or does Borders stock nothing anymore? sigh.
    xoxo
