‘cuz everything I do was featured on the pages of iD’

Warning, this post is going to be incredibly sickening and gushy.  Please refrain from reading if you’re feeling a little queasy.

I feel as though lately, I’ve been banging on about all the opportunities that the blog has been given – mainly the Chanel trip and it makes me feel uncomfortable to think that people might see this as boastful or bragging.  Lady Coveted once pointed out that she feels as though she is along for the ride of my ‘style journey’ when reading this blog and that is a lovely way of putting it because it is well and truly, me putting my immediate thoughts, musings, observations, experiences and findings on fashion on the blog without any intention of getting praise, reaction or criticism.  Style Bubble is where I instinctively and compulsively post, kind of like excitedly telling a best friend the first instance that fashion t/m/o/e/f comes to me (got to think of a clever acronym for the above…).

I don’t post every single bit of press that Style Bubble gets, be it online or print.  That makes it sound like there’s been plenty of press – there hasn’t.  But there have been instances where I didn’t even know I was in such and such a magazine or website or I’m just not very good at keeping afloat with these things.  However, I really couldn’t NOT post my most significant bit of press yet…

In the latest October issue of i-D, aptly the World Wide Web issue, Alexandra Phanor (thank you for the interview) wrote an article titled ‘Modern Technology Owes Ecology an Apology’, giving an overview of blogs, what they’re about, the impact they’re having (Should H&M magazine be kicking themselves for saying such derogatory things…?) and ta da…. I’m ‘on the pages of i-D’!!!!! (singing CSS’s Art Bitch there…).

This isn’t about saying ‘Look at me, I’m in i-D!’ but it’s more like a chokey ‘I’m not worthy’ thing.  The trio of magazines that first showed me that there was that other side of fashion, the stuff Vogue/Elle did not dare cover, were The Face, i-D and Dazed & Confused.  My pocket money was spent on those mags, devouring them avidly and opening my eyes to things that made me realise I had a very ‘green’ and one-dimentional view of fashion.  So for some Vogue/Elle is a big deal, but for me i-D and that ilk is the REAL deal.

Yes, it’s only a small paragraph within a long article.  I am glad they chose a quote from me that really hones in what I was saying before about blogs vs. magazines.  The paragraph starts on the previous page… and I go…

‘I vehemently believe that the two mediums aren’t hurting each other.  I find them both to be indispensable sources of fashion inspiration and information.’

I’m also considering changing my tagline to ‘She approaches her blog with the zeal of a cheerleader shaken like a fizzy bottle of Coca-Cola.’  Alexandra, that’s a quote an a half….cheers!#

I have scanned the whole article if you are a) one of the bloggers mentioned – seriously superb company….. Sartorialist, Facehunter, A Shaded View on Fashion, Julie Frederickson’s Coutorture…. or b) a blogger who should feel encouraged that print fashion media is recognising a blog’s value and what they are and not seeing them as the amateurish enemy.

So, once again, please excuse the sad/tragic gushing and really, this isn’t about ‘Hey, Style Bubble rules..’ but ‘Hey, BLOGS rule…’.  Shall we get cheesy?  Group hug?  Snaps?  Major props?  A big ‘muah’?  That’s all fine by me…

  1. Congratulations!!!!!!
In in my opinion this is the only real fashion blog out there, the only one that really can be compared to a fashion magazine because it does create things from scratch, I’m not surprised that you are getting the recognition you deserve you doing a brilliant job!

  2. Congratulations, Susie! I know what you mean by that feeling… almost baffled. I’m glad they recognized the bloggers they mentioned! And this reminds me… I need to go magazine shopping. =D

  3. Just wonderful! So happy for you!
I visit London twice a year for work (I’m a designer in Canada, and it’s standard here for designers to travel to Europe before developing each new season, to get a taste of what’s going on) and I just love reading your blog to keep that London feeling going, even after I return to Mtl.
I also go to Hong Kong twice a year, so it’s funny that you pretty much sum up two of my favorite cities.
You’ve ruined me for all other fashion blogs (except KoS, those girls are great)
    Much love and congrats!

  4. Go fashion blog!!! 🙂 Congrats, love the shoes in that picture. They look like Jil Sander.

  5. I think it’s great that you’re getting so much attention and you should share as much of that as you feel like it here. Blogs are inherently self-promoting since they’re written from a personal standpoint about the blogger’s life. So go for it. My only very gentle suggestion is that you try to tone down the self-deprecation and stop apologizing for your success. This project has turned out really well for you and you should be happy and proud; it’s time to start taming the insecurity beast, don’t you think? You’ve become influential so rise to the challenge 🙂

  6. Thanks guys… truly…
WendyB: Alas it’s inherent in my character. If I didn’t self-deprecate, it would not be true to myself. It’s not insecurity. It’s a reality check and I have very high standards for myself. It may be a personality flaw but hopefully you’ll forgive me for having that flaw…. I will work on it…but really, if you met me in person, I am THIS self-deprecating for real… gosh, I would not know how to act any other way…. a confident Susie? People who know me would laugh their heads off…

  7. Congratulations, Susie!! You definitely deserve to be there. Your blog is one of the most creative and interesting reads of my day. Thank you!

  8. Susie, I know it’s the real you, and I’m not saying it’s a terrible thing, and I do like how you’ve been “real” on this blog…but we all do evolve as life circumstances change. I’m really not trying to be mean. I just don’t think you want to get to the point of being like Sarah Jessica Parker being silly and twirling her hair and being like “OMG, me, you guys?!” on stage when she’s winning her 10th Emmy. She started to seem a bit disingenuous. As your blog gets even bigger and more important and influential, as I expect it will, you might want to devote less of its space to your disbelief over your success. (Then you take the disbelief issue to a therapist like we all do here in NYC — I mean, it’s practically mandatory here) That’s all I’ll say. Just food for thought from someone who has been through it. 🙂

  9. There are plenty of blogs out there that just serve to stroke their owners’ egos with every little scrap at hand. This is SO not one of them. Congrats!

  10. CONGRATULATIONS!
    i’m thrilled for you susie.
yr SO deserving. stylebubble is quite possibly one of the best fashion blogs online- either way it’s definitely one of my daily reads.
    xoxo

  11. I bought i-D this morning and saw you in it, I was like wow I read that blog, it even made me feel good. Congrats!

  12. Don’t worry about gushing, don’t apologize, and don’t worry about posting the press you receive! You’re doing something amazing, you’re working your butt off, and you have tons of talent. I think most readers are happy you’re getting recognition and are happy for you!

  13. That is awesome news. You know, as you look up to other bloggers and explain all your influences, you yourself are becoming quite the influence (on me, anyway). Sigh, now I have to wait a whole month for the new i-D to come out in the States…

  14. susie, it’s wonderful to see you succeed… and come on, you work full time, you write original posts daily, you shop, you have a boyf. it’s amazing what you do…
enjoy the attention, you wholeheartedly deserve it. i personally am so happy for you!
    : )

  15. Wow cool! Thanks for scanning! I wouldn’t have even know Iw as in it without you putting it online.
    GO TEAM FASHION BLOGS!

  16. Hey Susie, that’s effing fantastic. You rock! You have always rocked. Long before ID or any other magazine ever noticed. Long may you continue to rock. Mad props (as they say in the ‘hood).

  17. Congrats to you and all the other bloggers that add a whole new (and needed) dimension to the fashion world. This was the very first fshion blog I ever started reading and it has been the one that has opened the doors to tons of others that are just as wonderful. THANK YOU

  18. Thats fantastic! I’ve only recently caught on to your blog and really, you’re a bit of an inspiration! You might not think you deserve the coverage but us readers think you’re wrong! Well done 🙂

  19. Yay Susie! I didn’t even know what a blog was until I discovered yours. As someone else said, you work really hard on your blog, you totally deserve all the props but it’s OK if you can’t believe it. Your self deprecation is what makes you you, right? I haven’t bought I’d for ages but I’ll buy this one…

  20. but style bubble DOES rule!!! Seriously you are the best fashion blogger out there, your on my homepage. Your talent is overwhelming, really makes me doubt if im doing the right degree (fashion), Ill be sure to buy this I-D.
    🙂 fan from spain

  21. Susie, you do deserve all you’ve got and more!
And don’t change…you are who you are, and your humility (I mean that in the best way) make your blog a true joy to read. There are way too many self-important blogs which offer so little.
    🙂

  22. Wow! I’m super excited. My old housemate in Tokyo is in that issue too, The Fashion Ramone (Gallermic) He will die when I tell him!

  23. GO SUSIE! It’s absolutely amazing that you’re in i-D, and you fully deserve the standing ovation I and a lot of others would like to give you, and honestly, I wish you wouldn’t underestimate yourself so. It’s obvious you put a lot of work and love into Style Bubble, and we truly appreciate that.

  24. Wow, Susi, congrats! I’m totally hooked on your blog. Great to see that you’re getting some recognition. I think mass media is going through a “face lift” by giving some credit to bloggers like you.
