Buy into some ‘English Countryside’ at Selfridges

Proenza Schouler’s collection for Target made it to Colette and in the spirit of supporting all things ‘English’, Alice Temperley’s collection for Target will be available in Selfridges London for a very limited period only.  Alice Temperley herself will be present at 9.30 tomorrow morning at the store (Duke Street entrance) to ‘unveil’ her collection (even though UK-Target-Go International obsessives will have browsed the images already on the website…).  I’m personally not all that keen on most of the items, especially when I’m surfing the Target website and constantly grated by the ‘This is all English countryside-inspired’ slant Target have gone for.  Throw in the cheesily named categories like Devonshire Darling, Crown Jewel and Edwardian Edge, and you just want to laugh.

There is of course nothing Devonshire, jewel-like or Edwardian about the clothes and most importantly, nothing about it says ‘English countryside’ to me.  If anything, it seems to be more Francophilic with the jaunty berets, black and white palette and frou-frou chicness.  The line that kills me the most though is whilst you’re waiting for the advert to run, it comes up saying ‘one moment, luv’.  On a more positive note, Alice Temperley does look very beautiful in the video where she is talking about the collection.

So, ‘English Countryside’, the collection may not be, but for Temperley fans, a budget-friendly (I’m assuming they won’t mark up the prices too heavily, converting from dollars to pounds…even if they stick a ¬£ sign in place of the $ sign, the prices would still be considered ‘inexpensive’) diffusion line is well worth a look-in.  Do report back here about the quality if you do toodle off to Selfridges tomorrow…

  1. Hey Susie, you got facehunted! You look fab, by the way. I wondered how long it would be til I saw you on the Facehunter again. Hope you’re having a great time at LFW, I’m very jealous. Cris x

  2. I was so looking forward to this because I really like the stuff Temperley makes but from what’s on sale online (not even the stuff in the pics here!) I’m disappointed. Guess I’ll just have to save money and buy from her collection.

  3. The quality is good to fair, but in nearly all the other GO collections there have been silk items and I was suprised when trying on pieces yesterday (I live in the US) that they were polyester- especially the blouses which would lend themselved nicely to silk.
The two blouses I tried on were cut like a poor man’s Ossie Clark- the white dot one with the keyhole neckline and the black/blue dots with the pussy bow tie. Only the former had a good fit. The wide leg crepe pants felt really, really chintzy and thin.

  4. I saw the clothes on Friday and was not impressed with the quality in the slightest.

  5. I don’t like the style much either, but thanks for posting, it’s nice to know what’s out there.

  6. So weird. I’d get it if they were trying to sell this stuff to Americans, but what English person do they expect to get this way?

  7. I think it’s just so so, a bit pretty, a bit boring, etc.

  8. Thus far I’ve been disappointed pretty much universally in all the Go International stuff. It’s funny when you said english countryside it made me think of that English programs from the 70’s or 80’s called My Life or something like that. About the husband and wife who have a little farm and they have really posh neighbours? haha random but thats what it made me think of….

  9. I did a pretty extensive review of the collection over here in the US, and like Dee I really thought some of the polyester should have been done in silk. Libertine managed a GO line in ALL natural fibers. But the Temperley collection is pretty much polyester or cotton, with some wool blends. Also, some of the detailing looks really cheap, like the buttons and the poly satin edging. There is a leather jacket that definitely worth a look.

  10. Thanks for all the State-side reviews…
Did any Londoners make it out in a fan-girl way to see Temperley unveil this ‘English Countryside’ collection?

  11. I actually picked up quite a few pieces. The military jacket, the vest, the pink, black and cream dress (which looks fabulous with the vest) and the black mini skirt. I was very pleased with what I got for the price. Everything fit like a dream, and I find the little gold buttons adorable.
