Leather from the Other Side

At Graduate Fashion Week, I mentioned a heavy use of leather and treatment of it in a way that contradicts the conventions of the material.  There was imaginative use of it to treat it in a casual way like cotton jersey.  But now, I’m quite obsessed with working with leather as though it were a craft.  Hence my ‘Tooled-Up’ post yesterday.  Therefore it was great to come across Megan Stein’s leather skirt that uses an embossed effect that she made for her collection at the Chambre Syndicale in Paris.  I sort of actually know Megan indirectly as she was the Grand Prize Winner at the Arts of Fashion competition in 2005, and I got involved with the AoF last year.  I’d love to see this kind of embossed effect more widely used, as I’m far more willing to shell out for a craft not easily replicated or cheapened and also because…well…I’m afraid it’s true…I’ve been truly leathered this season….

  1. it looks like anaglypta wallpaper. it’s amazing. it should be worn with latex stockings, white gloves and a too-clean overstarched cotton piqu√© blouse. very heaven.
    love,
    Alex.

  2. ooh I really really love that. I’m the completely opposite style wise of you susie, and the above poster. I prefer to simplify to let the details of the piece shine. Great post susie

  3. hooray! megan is a friend of mine and I am SO proud of her. She constantly amazes me with her talent and vision and it just keeps getting better and better. It’s great to see her mentioned here on my favourite fashion blog!!!

  4. fantastic skirt, and I like the patent on the bolero as well (not 100% sure if it’s leather as well from this image, could be deceiving)

  5. hi susie, thank you soo much for the mention! looks like i will definately be in miami for arts of fashion, i hope i get to finally meet you in person. and yes, the bolero is patent leather & d√©vor√© silk. 🙂

  6. wow…that’s pretty amazing…
i just had a thought reading about this…how acceptable leather is…and then you look at how un-acceptable (to most people) fur is…
If it was a skirt made of fur, there would’ve been controvesy…but somehow leather despite being made from an animal also is almost completely accepted…!
    Just pondering!
