I know I know. I should know better. Cutesy gimmicks? Animals on your feet? Wake and smell the Sumatra coffee (decidedly more grown up than normal coffee, non?) Susie. Someone please shake my shoulders and say ‘You’re 23, let go of that phase of decorating your notepads with Hello Kitty stickers and thinking it was acceptable to wear Kerropi ear muffs!’.
Alas I cannot. I have my downfalls too. And they involve shoes that look like mice. I just can’t get these Mouse Marc shoes, that have been issued and re-issued by Marc Jacobs due to the popularity, out of my head. Especially the new ‘spotted mice’ shoes available from Colette – spotty, furry, cute…. ack…. I have embraced my origins seeing as I hail from the land of Hong ‘Ho cute ar!’ Kong.
It doesn’t stop there. Remember when I talked up the Japanese label mercibeaucoup but found it incredibly hard to buy anything from their web shop without shelling out a ridiculous amount of shipping costs on Crescent Shop? Eva New York has come up with some subtle animal alternatives like…
…this Marjan Pejoski dress that is all hemmed up with owls. I was a little baffled as to why there was a sudden ‘Owl’ craze going on a while back. I’m pretty sure there isn’t a Top of the Birds chart and even then my vote would go to the peregrine falcon. However, the dress isn’t screaming owl…
…this Eskimo girl dress by Pepper & Pistol that from afar has no inklings of animal cutenss but up close you can see Arctic wildling printed in pinks and blues. Altogether now, let’s say ‘Awww…..’…

I need those shoes NOW!! they are so adorable. i dont think they are too cute at all. the spotted fabric might be a bit much for me, but just in plain black i LOVE them!!
Hey Susie. Owls are a ’70s retro thing. It was a popular motif in fashion, jewelry, home decor, etc. back in the day. Why it was popular the first time around, I have no clue. I do like them, though.
haha..lei zan ge ho kay gwai.. those go well with pjs.. hahaha
oh! those shoes are horrible!!
I always thought owls were popular cause of the O RLY owls.
But then maybe I’m just stupid.
I liked the owl craze for the Harry Potter associations…and I’d still snap up anything with a cute motif on it given half a chance.
I was expecting the squids and such but I have to admit the owls snuck up on me.
One weakness I have is for cat motifs but I draw the line at those shoes.
Don’t you find it off-putting though that Colette refers to the spotted MJ shoes as “cow”? It’s such an odd way to refer to such a cute shoe.
keropi earmuffs? you kid! i wish i had those.
i like clothes with animals… they add a bit a whimsy. for a while i was obsessed with the stag. it was funny because the receptionist at my work told me the stag it my ‘power animal’.
i’m not sure what that means, but i like it.
: )
I can’t get those shoes out of my head either(ireallywantthem!!)….but yeah, i hadn’t seen the black pair. the shiny hair makes it look kind of realistic…
oh and as for mercibeacoup, have you checked out the subsequent seasons?….last season the theme was fruit this fall is mushrooms.
🙂
i have the spotted mice shoes! sooooo cute. i’ve bought at least one pair of each of the seasons he does them….i think i have 4 pairs of mouse shoes now. i LOVE LOVE LOVE them. they go with everything. the spotted ones remind me of the royal tannembaums(sp)
but i’m obessed with animal stuff. it’s a weakness. 🙂
i am a sucker for tsumori chisato’s cutesy prints. they’re always subtly cute. bold colors or graphic lines or scribbled-like quality or unexpected animal cuteness turns the prints from just kawaii/dut yee to really freaking awesome.
mercibeaucoup is opening their first overseas store in HK very soon.
oh my goodness, please refrain from wearing those poor mice on your feet! >_<
My friend and I spent the day trying on designer shoes at Nordstroms and I saw the MJ mouse shoes and I really had that sickly urge to have them. Sadly I have large feet syndrome that plagues most of my family and therefore I cannot fit them. But they are cute without going full-on Hello Kitty cutesyness.
A very split opinion on the mouse shoes…my ango canto must be awful as I had no idea what you said Gerri…type in Chinese..a lot simpler!
Parmesan: Thanks for the info!
I just have a thing for weird/odd cuteness…. these shoes falling into that category
