Halfway Sheer

The Apathist is going through a sheer period.  I’m going through a ‘tenatitive sheer period.’  As Meg pointed out, the sheer shirt is a little Cher a la Clueless but when worn tight and black under a Marios Schwab dress like Selma Blair shows here in the new Dazed & Confused (absolute stonkin’ issue and yet another pink cover to add to the September issue trend…), I’m well and truly smitten.

So why the tentative-ness?  In all my five sheer top experiences, for some reason my neck and decolletage are seems to react obscenely to the sheer nylon fabric and inflame in a roaring red rash that only a bucket of ice can calm down.  Remember that Christopher Kane for Topshop body?  Had to yank it off my body within 5 minutes of putting it on because I could see my skin going red through the nylon mesh.  Therefore, tentative would be the operative word when dealing with sheer tops.

So I investigate the idea of having sheer opera gloves (the arms are safe from the roaring rash) and came across these Yohji Yamamoto silk tulle gloves.  Though they work in the context of the collection – ironic logo usage – outside of that context, they don’t quite fall into place…and at EUR231, well…just forget about it…

From Luisa Viaroma to this random junky shop creatively entitled ‘Great Lookz’ is a bit of a drop down.  There’s some crazy pound-shop shit here – gaudy bags, cheap picture frames and tacky nick-nacks.  But amongst all the crap, you find two pages of sheer gloves goodness.  It’s the kind of naff site where if you did stumble onto a ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ era fashion item – i.e. these gloves, you’ve basically hit the ‘It’s so crap, it’s good’ level.

I want to buy a few long and short and layer them up over each other, over long sleeved tops (that don’t give me rashes) and indulge in my love of sheer…in a strictly dermatologically safe environment.

  1. the first pic with the opera fingerless sleeves one is nice…make sure to get a pair of those ones 🙂

  2. as a dancer i dont think i could ever go near sheer tops without thinking of chicago! not that chicago is bad but… well sheer tops aren’t the easiest things to quick-change into!!
love the opera gloves though!! i like the ones with the bows best 🙂

  3. i adore sheer clothing that can be layered with other unexpected fabrics for a (usually) ‘contradicting’ look. selma blair really did it best in this post ;]
ive been meaning to get some opera-length gloves for this upcoming f/w but maybe if i can find some sheer ones like you suggested, the transition will be smoother. thank you for the inspiration!

  4. Re the tops – you don’t seem to have the same trouble with tights – any chance you could cut the feet and crotch out of a pair of sheer tights and wear it as a layering piece?
