As random as they come…

596spongebobsquarepantsposters Well we all know that London streetwear trends range from the very normal and generic to the very very weird….   Actually, I’m not sure whether that statement is true but I just said it to accomodate what I’m about to tell you.

I like Sponge Bob Square Pants.  I didn’t get it at first but then I happily went along with it and just admitted that Sponge Bob tickles my cartoon fancies and I yearn for those days when I got home early enough to watch it.

I just didn’t think that Sponge Bob would be adopted as London’s nu-rave cartoon hero.  Perhaps I missed the signs.  He is bright and yellow with some seriously googly eyes (replace googly eyes with those freaky magnifying eye-glasses in reality) and he does run wild everywhere causing general chaos and freaking the hell out of under-the-sea habitants (replace with people who still scratch their heads at the term ‘Nu-rave’).  Super Super magazine salutes Sponge Bob in a big way in issue 7 with about 4 references to the fellow.  (Nothing about Patrick though….which is pretty tragic…), including an encouraging write-up to snap up some Sponge Bob gear at New Look, of all places.

Of course Super Super’s hyper reality cannot be seen as something rampaging the streets but I DID manage to snap the dude on the bottom right, bopping away to Daft Punk at the Wireless festival donning his Sponge Bob visor with pride and also an assortment of Sponge Bob necklaces (obscured by the plastic horse…. a whole other point of discussion really….).

I’m just about down for mixing up the visor with the Preen dress…..maybe but as much as I love watching Sponge Bob and Co, wearing him is another thing altogether.

  1. I cracked up when I saw this post because I happened to be watching Spongebob at the same time! I’ve only got Spongebob socks, but I think painting my bedroom yellow was a nod to my favorite cartoon character. I just hope it doesn’t turn into the Bart Simpson “eat my shorts” craze of the 90’s. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

  2. this is only marginally related, but i have a stupid question, since i am out of the loop. are these nu-rave kids listening to techno, or some other music? being there the first go ’round, that’s what i’d assume, but…you know what they say about assuming.
i know this question will drop into the void, knowing how busy you are, but i figured i’d ask anyhow… 😛 perhaps someone can enlighten me.

  3. tricia – it’s a sort of techno-fused indie. Imagine 80s rave revival, but with a few actual bands in the mix.
    Also: Spongebob Squarepants rules!

  4. i love spongebob too!! but gosh… i don’t know about the bikini. although looking at it does make me chuckle but would i wear something where people would point and laugh? :p

  5. WHOA!! The spongebob trend came across north america a few years ago…the show (and the logo) was super popular with the hipster kids. I admit that I have a couple of pairs of spongebob socks and a pair of spongebob underwear…the show is actually really clever and who doesn’t love a yellow sponge with superlong eyelashes?

yeah I was going to say Emily. Wearing cartoons as if it’s super hip is passe in my opinion. Please move on. Isn’t every wannabe 14 year old carrying some sort of cartoon backpack to their grade 9 class? Boring.

  7. oh meg, you are so right. I’ve seen a ridiculous amount of older kids who wear those cartoon backpacks (bob the builder, bratz) and it drives me absolutely mad!

  8. Yep…I saw the SpongeBob Bikini in New Look yesterday and I was thinking ‘what the?’ Adults that wear kids stuff gives me the creeps. It reminds me of my rave/goth stage where I was Hello Kitty from head to toe…cringe, cringe, cringe. You would never see a goth on the beach in a yellow bikini tho…I guarantee it! xxx

  9. haha i see that boy out clubbing in london and he’s always got that horse with him! it’s a freudian field day if you ask me…

  10. maybe the US is ahead for a change. I remember Sponge Bob and Dora the Explorer being a big “ghetto/hip-hop thing” 4-5 years ago.

  11. hah!!..i bought a BRIGHT yellow spongebob t-shirt a couple of months back off the streets in india(whodv guessed?) hardly expecting to wear it anywhere outside my bedroom..i now feel weird knowin that i can..
