Though I would love to see Preen, the label, come up with a magazine dedicated to the wonderfulness that is Thea Bregazzi and Justin Thornton’s vision, the magazine I speak of hails not from the UK but from LA and the name is derived from a book about birds and has no connection/affiliation with the British label. I’m a self-confessed mag hag as you can probably tell with my extensive linkage to fashion magazines (all of which I buy regularly…yes, somehow I manage to drop ¬£100 on mags every month…). However, there aren’t a lot of American-based magazines that I buy on a regular basis or particularly rate which from such a big country with a vast amount of fashion talent (designers, photographers, stylists etc) is a real shame. In fact, there seems to be a bit of a dearth of independent magazines. Nylon is useful for keeping up with new labels though I think used to be a lot better. Tokion and Surface, though strictly not fashion magazines can have great content. American Vogue and Elle can be a little annoying to read. V and W is an occasional buy as the content can be patchy. So, in short, there’s nothing (at least nothing stocked in the UK) that regularly keeps me coming back for more.
From Issue 3:
So I’m most definitely intrigued by Preen, a bi-monthly magazine which is now into it’s 3rd issue. It cites Nova, a 1960’s edgy magazine as an inspiration and though I haven’t read the articles, I’m attracted to the editorials which are pretty and dreamlike without being scarily alienating. I guess the kind of styling that I’m attracted to and what I want to get our of State-side fashion magazines which I can’t get from Europeans is the wearable and covetable labels that America excels at, styled in an interesting way. Something a bit raw and completely un-glossy. I also like to see a mix and non-snobbery when it comes to the clothes featured; F21 mixed with Alexander Wang, vintage and Thakoon, which I can definitely see in Preen.
From Issue 2:
I have yet to find Preen in UK bookstores but hopefully, it will turn up and become a regular buy. Hopefully, it being bi-monthly means it’s nice and thick, perfect to add some variety to my Euro-centric coffee table pile.

Mmmm yeah I hunted around for this when I heard about it, but it’s unlikely our one, sad wee Borders will get it in even if it does come to the UK.
Nova had a very short lived relaunch a few years ago (maybe as long as 6 or 7) but never took off. I personally loved it, but clearly no-one else did. Wrong time I suppose. Shame.
the real question is how easy is it NOT to manage to drop 100 on mags every month? i for sure can’t (well, when i visit borders with some dosh on me it just disappears leaving me with a pile of magazines..) what are your other favourite magazines? i’m in love with Follow Magazine – http://www.followmagazine.com/ from Oz & there’s one from your side of the world that i just HAVE to get everytime i see it – Happy, Your Shopping Bible. Sadly, no website for me to pore over during the months i can’t get my hands on a new copy. *is sad* also, Glamour Magazine. =p
ps: i LOVE your style diary – gorgeous styles you have there! =)
♥ +x&o’s!
great post! thanks for sharing:) I wrote about it on my blog too!
great work, I liked you. Hope you’ll find it in the UK cause I sure won’t in Romania!

It seems like a really kl magazine
xxx
I have the same habbit to waist a lot of money on magazines.
flipped through this a couple days ago. really liked one ed but the rest failed to capture me. still, much potential and already better than most mags, especially here in the u.s.
yay for preen! not only does it hails from california. it’s from the friggin o.c
So glad to see another fellow Preen fan. Nylon has really gone down hill lately, and what I enjoy most about Preen is how almost quiet it is. It doesn’t seem to saturate itself in tv reality and such. At least for me, it’s almost like reading a really nice book, but with pictures instead. However I do enjoy the articles as well, particularly the first issue about communal living and the cakes of a special hotel.
Yes, Nylon has been doing worse lately. They seem as if they are trying too hard to go mainstream. I shall definately check this out. Forever 21 and Alexander Wang? Yum.
AiDoll, sorry o be the bearer of bad news but Happy is no more 🙁
darn D= thanks anyways rollergirl, appreciate it =)

I’m a big PREEN fan, too, as I think they’re trying to do something a bit different than other fashion/lifestyle mags. But I’m also a bit biased, as I wrote the Southpaw Pawe.Wa/Theodora & Alexandra Richards feature for the debut issue (so I can also attest that the people behind PREEN are great to work with, which is always nice). In any case, the worlds definitely needs more independent-minded monthlies.
Have you ever read Teen Vogue? I don’t know if its available in the U.K., but its one of the most interesting U.S fashion mags…although, of late, it has been a bit boring.
i love preen
If you like Surface and Tokion, I thought perhaps you’d enjoy PLANET magazine based in San Francisco and NYC. check it out http://www.planet-mag.com
They do a good job surveying the international scene – fashion, music, art, film. Editorial is back and forth, but the content is always strong.
xoxo, ghettro
(love your blog!)
I just picked up Preen today in Barnes & Noble in the US. I’ve never heard anything about it before, but once I started flipping through the third issue I was pleasantly surprised by the amazing photography. I can’t wait `till the fourth one comes out.
In the US it’s $5.99, okay for what’s in the magazine.
