Strictly speaking, this doesn’t even qualify as a DIY expert post. Everything handed to me on a plate for me to play around with in 2 minutes does not a DIY project make. I’m finding that styling tricks that you see in fashion magazines can work perfectly for the everyday wear and I think this would count as a styling trick. By tricks, I mean the addition of a prop that enhances to clothes but is not necessarily changing it’s original form.
So with this deconstructed skirt that I bought in Hong Kong a few years ago (as with a lot of my Hong Kong purchases, I haven’t the foggiest idea where the hell it came from…. it’s always ‘SOME indie boutique or another…’), which is perfectly adequate by itself, I wanted to manipulate it somehow without destroying it. You can call it DIY chicken syndrome – too scared to ruin it. Then came the peach net which I will use for something else but on this day, it wove in and out, around and about through the skirt, and also padded out the hips inside the sides of the skirt to create that faux hippage I was contemplating a while ago.
It resulted in one of those party piece skirts that you dress slummily down with t-shirt and plimsols and an old beanie hat that you can also change into night mode with something tight on top, waisted with a belt and some super high shoes. It’s like a more elaborate version of knotting a scarf around the waist. Of course, I did have a perfect raw material to start of with, namely the skirt but I think netting other skirts with a bit more deftness in the arrangement could ‘net’ (geddit? *wink wink nudge nudget* a similar effect. Plus, buying netting material is cheap as chips.

looks very tasty 🙂
Nice job!:)
love it! I’d buy it if I saw it in a clothing store!!!
there are still ‘SOME indie boutique or another…’ in HK?
could you name some in the next post, cos i hv trouble finding one…….>.< anyways, interesting try!!
Very couture inspired.
there was a *poof!* and susie la bubble appeared in her candyfloss gown and took us all into summer…
Ugly but wasn’t great in the first place.
looks ridiculous!
yeah thats hideous
I’m trying to think how I’d do that without a skirt like the one you’re using, but I could probably cut some strategic holes in a thrift-shop skirt. Hm. It would look neat if the net and the skirt were almost the same colour, so it would be more like a texturing effect.
I find your DIY posts very inspiring, thanks. Would like more of them please 🙂
it’s a very good job that cloths are very beautiful
no no nononoooooooooooooooo! ruining ruining ruining it.
It’s a neat idea, but maybe for a skirt that started out in a different shape. The shape of the garment originally made you look great, showed off how slim you are.
The netting makes it look messy, bulky, and unusually padded. I think it would look nice if you couls incorperate it into a sleeve or the train of a long dress (for that delicious bubbling-brook look) but it doesn’t work at all for midsection decor.
*could, sorry 😉
What can I say? Je ne regrette rien…. I have a love for the ugly…. !
