When antique and vintage collide

The word vintage has become an umbrella for everything that is not contemporary but clearly we know that some things should be classified as "antique".  This kimono I spotted behind the door of Hurwundeki in Spitalfields, London definitely qualifies for ‘antique’.  There’s something much more rich and weighty about a very very old kimono.   The faded colours and patterns.  The worn down stitches.  The heavier fabric.  Even the smell has a lot of depth to it.

But then I want to take the antique and of course do what I love and mix it up.  I want to take some weight off it but pairing it with something completely naff.  I could never do the top to toe naff look but adding an element of it with these finds from Las Vegas based vintage store Fruition would be enough.  As we are edging further and further away from the latter part of the twentieth century, deadstock streetwear is becoming more and more relevant and desirable.

However, my mind likes to hold the past of 700 years and collide that distant past with this not so distant past.  The effect might be a strange looking combination of crusty old and relatively new but mixing the two ends of the twentieth century somehow makes perfect sense to me.

  1. fruition’s website is so cool! wow… yeah, if you don’t mix it up with vintage, you look like you’re in high school. highly visible and completely clueless…

  2. The kimono is beautiful, but everything in Hurwundeki’s basement is gorgeous – someone there has a real eye for quality! Congrats about the nomination too Susie, as an avid reader I’m thrilled to see you getting rewarded for your briliant blog.
