Yes, I know I’m a little slow to react. Yes, every blog under the sun by now has their piece to say on the Kate Moss for Topshop collection. Yes, I’m going to be covering the launch in greater depth on video similar to the V&R for H&M video come 1st May. But anyhow, yes, let’s have a wee look at the collection now and yes, I do indeed have something to say.
It’s Kate Moss through and through. I’m not concerned how much of a ‘hand’ she put into the design of the collection because in my eyes, the clothes have achieved what they were supposed to. They evoke Kate Moss. They are ‘so Kate Moss’. The trouble is for me, and for a few others (Philip Green, boss of Topshop, certainly won’t be concerned because I believe we are in a minority) is that…well…to be honest, I never wanted to evoke Kate Moss and she has never been an inspiration for me. I like her style fine. She pulls everything together very well. But she has never really rocked my socks off in a way that she does for so many. Her name is so often dropped in best dressed lists, style icons that the Kate Moss broken record playing, for me has made me slightly blase about it all. I’m not doubtful. I’m just indifferent. However, fantastic news if you are looking to channel a particular incarnation of Kate Moss.
There’s ‘vaguely hippy/summery’ Moss.
The ‘flirty/slightly slutty’ Moss.
There’s ‘sexy boyish’ Moss.
There’s ‘classic off-duty’ Moss.
There’s ‘fashion forward/edged up’ Moss.
If I had to choose one incarnation, I think I’d go for the last but only because judging from the pictures, those are the pieces that work for me and stand out in terms of original design. Sadly, for me, the rest of it is too much like what Topshop have been churning out season after season in their normal lines. As Ms Moss has said, she is fully aware that Topshop have been evoking her style in their design and now she is just finally putting the official stamp on it all. I’m sure for many people, the official stamp is enough to induce them to go queuing and snatching on May 1st. I’d be interested to see to what extent the clamor and excitement will be.
I am liking the collection, it looks like what she said it was: going through her closet and recreating some of the pieces. I like the boyish Moss looks, the waist coats & blazers. And I admire the fashion forward dresses, though I don’t wear dresses myself.
not being a fan of either topshop or kate moss myself (sacrelige i know ;-D) i hadn’t put too much thought into considering the collection. having a look at the photos on the website now, it strikes me that you’re right that most of it is the same as what topshop always churn out.
Saying that, if i’m home, I might go queue up to see what the white dress you put in the fashion forward category looks like on as it’s really quite cute. The same goes for the maxi skirt in the third ‘vaguely hippy’ image and the dress there.
I doubt if any of it will fit as is usually the case with topshop, and i’ll be outraged by the prices, but i’ll have fun ;-D

Wow, are those ALL one person? It looks like she doesn’t even have a style; she is the ultimate clothes horse, that rare type of person who can put anything on make it look like she’s rocked that style forever. Perfect for a model but as the inspiration for a clothing line? Seems too vague to me…
I believe that white dress will set you back somewhere in the region of ¬£300, or so Vogue reckons…
actually the white dress only comes for 45 pounds, which is quite ok really. It is also my favourite piece, and the one I hope to be able to grab on ebay as the collection wont be available in my country. As for the rest of the stuff, they pretty much leave me indifferent and Susie is right, it’s just same old same old topshop stuff, nothing to kill for.

the reason why kate moss is no inspiration for you susie is that it’s too simple and clean. it doesn’t fit your personal style which is rather multi-facetted and playful. see it as something positive!

but to be on topic: i actually don’t see what the big fuss is with kate moss, in general. she’s a beautiful woman, sure…but stylistically? she seems rather plain. the collection (with possibly the exception of the last group susie showed here) looks rather flat as well…or at least like pieces we’ve all seen before…
yum, i love the last three. the rest of the collection doesn’t do anything for me either but i’d be willing to queue up just to get my hands on the white or the black/gold chainmail dress!

The pieces on their own look cool but to go and queue up for an item that was vaugely inspired by something in a rather stylish (super)model’s wardrobe and re-created for TopShop by an anonymous TopShop designer (as opposed to something designed by an actual designer, say Karl Lagerfeld or Proenza Schouler) beats me!

sigh… the not working on women with breasts is unfortunately true i think – damn womanly figures lol. might still make the rush – the white dress looks like it would be relatively easy to nip in if bought in a larger size. if it is 45 quid would be worth it.
i think it doesn’t matter who the collection is designed by if the clothes themselves are worth it. while i dont think most of them are, surely if there’s even one gem…
that white dress is going to be on everyone in london once it hits the shop floor methinks… good thing i only live here in the hols and 75% of the calls i have for wearing dresses are at uni hehe.

You are right about the rest looking so much like something on Topshop lines, I quite dislike the look where Kate was wearing the floral top and 3quater length jeans it has be be the worst look in the collection, however My favourite has to be the boyish looks and the edgy looking dresses modelled by Irina especiallly the gold and black dress.
i am so angry at myself as i am too busy to witness the riot , which will take place that fine day. but i am shall compensate for it by buying at least something from the collection.

omg- i really want that white dress in the last category. In my opinion it is the only great peice in the collection… i am slightly disheartened that everyone else likes it I can see my self suffering some bruises in my bid to snare one.

I think the white dress is nice, but as soon as I saw it in the vogue previews my thoughts were that it will be the “it” item that everyone will snap up. It will be ubiquitous on the streets of London in no time- and who likes wearing the same thing as everyone else?
The dress it’s based on, however, is absolutely gorgeous. The yellow chiffon that I fell in love with was worn by Moss about three years ago and, learning that it was vintage, I thought that I’d never be able to get my hands on it. Thankfully asos have just brought out a replica of it which pleases me no end. It’s the only time I’ve ever admired Moss’s style.

I like it more than I expected to, and I’m surprised at all the comments on here. You guys don’t seem overly impressed! I’m sure it will sell like crazy though, and I’m so there to witness the scrum!
I have never seen what the big deal is about Ms Moss either. She dresses ok and has a face that can be transformed into many different looks. However she has always struck me as looking very plain and studenty. Could it be that when Princess Diana died she left a void for a fashion icon. For a while it was Victoria Beckham but she semms to have taken the mantle too seriously. So we are left with Kate. Hmmm. I won’t be rushing out to buy the collection.
